The State of Her is a new opera for mezzo, orchestra and electronics about alcohol, freedom and consent. It is a piece composed by Caitlin Smith and co-written by singer and performer Sinéad O’Kelly and director Franciska Éry. The piece is about the walk home from the club. It is about holding your keys in between your fingers like a weapon in case you need to defend yourself.

This demo was produced at the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg as part of the enoa Opera Creation Journey residency. This team will be hosted for a second R&D residency in August, 2022 by the Britten-Pears Foundation.

From the opera NOW THAT WE ARE PERSONS:"... and I looked up and saw the source of the noise, saw a familiar look, saw that sound, a sound that jams all other signals in the brain, a sound that compels the sucking in of the belly and the plastering on of a smile, the sound of a man looking at me loudly while thinking... oh you could be the woman."

A new opera by composer and librettist Caitlin Smith, with creative facilitator Kelvin Chan, and creative producer Leonora Scheib/Civic Opera Creations. Currently in development.

This audio collage was created for a 10-channel speaker setup surrounding the audience which is woven into a score with live performers. This is a stereo mixdown of that collage.
