The Murky Sonics Show (Subtle Radio)

Izzi is rapidly establishing herself in the Cambridge clubbing scene as one of the tightest and most experimental DJs in the city, most recently being booked for the highly-rated first post-Covid King’s Bunker next Thursday!

Part of Cambridge-based @playtime.cam and the @daytimers_uk collective, she tries to spin selections from underrepresented artists and blends UK dance with more global club sounds.

Her music has a “strong emphasis on knitting together tight drum breaks and warm wubby basslines”, and she loves mixing across genres such as breaks, dub, grime and garage, with infusions of reggaeton, hard drum, electro and (more recently) juke and footwork.

She’ll be going B2B with Lift Up co-owner, Frithy, for an hour of 130-140 madness in what will be a showcase of two of Cambridge’s best young DJs.

In our next instalment of the mix series, co-owner Isochrone steps up to the decks with a set that pays homage to the dubstep sound that emerged in South London in the early 2000s, whilst also incorporating the sounds of the modern dubstep scene that is taking over clubs across the country.

Make sure to grab a good pair of headphones or speakers to really appreciate this sub-heavy mix.

For the next instalment of our mix series we have a debut from D.skizz and smgDUB. The Cambridge-based duo are specialists in deep bass music and this mix perfectly encapsulates the deep, sub-heavy sound that the pair are bringing to their hometown.

Murky Sonics Mix 010 - Rift

Next up in the mix series is a new face to the Murky crew, but no stranger to the Cambridge clubbing scene: Karamanshan. Karamanshan is one half of the dynamic duo 'Gary + Ed' who have been turning Cambridge dance floors on their head over the past year, and will be doing just that at Murky x Fleek THIS Thursday at Revs.

Murky Sonics Mix 014 - Tovsky

This ones a fucking bone rattler! The Dubstance trio are here with a beautifully eerie mix, exploring the low end frequencies of new-era deep dubstep and grime. Grab your old sub from the attic, crack open a cold one and get ready to have your face melted.

Having been in the game for the best part of a decade, the Leicester-based trio rebranded in early 2020 focussing on blending the sounds of early dubstep with the newer sounds that were emerging at the time as the genre went through somewhat of a revival. With sprinklings of their own productions, Dubstance are definitely a group to pay close attention to!

Murky Sonics Mix 015 - Dubstance

Kicking off the week is another new face! This time it's Welsh DJ Talulah who is really starting to make their mark on the Cambridge scene having played events such as King's Bunker, CGD and ArcSoc as well as being a key member of the woman and NB group Playtime. 

In this mix they effortlessly blend heavy drums, afro-latin beats, and flamenco style vocals. The mix is both forward thinking whilst still giving a strong nod to UK rave culture and so really encapsulates the murky sound. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did!

Last January Alex (Giddy) and Fergus (Avran) decided to throw a joint party with their respective collectives- Sumfin Sumfin and Murky Sonics. The event was a huge success and unfortunately a large number of people never managed to grab a ticket to the affair... however, we managed to record the whole night and so will be releasing the mixes this week!

It only makes sense to have Avran and Giddy's B2B kicking it off. The pair opened the night starting with some nice funky, house, techno and garage before getting more weird and into the realms of breaks and electro- showcasing the sonic identities of both collectives.

Ahead of our next event this Friday in collaboration with RizeUp, we though it only right to get 1/2 of the MGMT team behind the decks again to treat you to some Monday evening beats.

This set was recorded live at the John Hughes Arts Festival last Friday and represents a slower and more left-field side of the Murky sound. In this mix Avran traverses through the plains of experimental dub, hip-hop and techno with tracks that hark back to the progressive sounds coming out the '90s.

Tovsky - Recorded Live @ Murky Forest '23

We’ve been fans of wave and neo-grime scenes for some time now, so when CSV expressed interest in getting involved we were excited. Fast forward more months than would be ideal (thanks to Fergus’ shadmin) and we can finally present CSV’s mix! London-based Chris is one of the pioneers pushing the neo-grime and waves sounds, genres that take from UK sounds of the 2000s and 2010s, and give them a fresh coat, influenced in part by the modern sounds of trap and hip-hop coming out of the US. What’s more, CSV’s skills extend far beyond music, with the producer also gaining recognition for his visual art and lecturing at Point Blank music school!

This mix is packed full of his own productions, as well as dubs from other key players in the scene, whilst being interspersed with some seriously Murky UK bass flavas. Ft. music from the man himself, Kareful, gl00my, Nikki Nair, Dual Monitor, Outsidr + more!

The Luxembourg-raised DJ has exploded onto the Cambridge scene in the past year with a number of sets at Slipped Disc, ArcSoc, Spotlite, The Thing + more 💥

Originally finding his musical passion making trap and hip-hop beats, the DJ has now moved into the realms of hardgroove, hard hosue, with sprinklings of UKG and dubstep creating mixes full of energy and rawness. This mix is no different and one to get those hips shaking on a Monday evening! 🕺

Stepping up for his Murky debut is our good friend Mushota aka Rune, a key member of Bath-based events brand Stafford Sounds. Mush has spent the past year curring his teeth in Bath’s flourishing scene, supporting the likes of Dr Dubplate and Prospa, playing with the Origins, Bath House, and Stafford Sounds crews. 🛀

Whilst Rune’s sets usually merge garage, breaks and techno, the up-and-coming artist has recently started dipping his toes into house, as this mix exemplifies. His Murky mix showcases his love of deep and rare cuts, being filled to the brim with late 90s and early 2000s house and techno from the likes of Yoshitoshi and Defected, as well as a sprinkling of modern tech house, and of course a cheeky garnish of UKG. 🕺

It’s a journey of a mix that ebbs and flows - the perfect mix to slap on a sit back to with a cold brew, soundtrack your drive to a festival, or kick off your pres! 🍻
