Christmas Dinner Part 1
CPerrinsS : Melinda was in the kitchen putting the final touches on dinner. She came out of the kitchen in search of her daughter. "Angela where are you, I need you to set the table."
detobenson16 : Olivia's relief had gifted her by coming in an hour early and relieving her for the night. She had been able to go home, have a quick shower and dress nicely for dinner. She put on a black dress with a red sweater and heels. She managed to look festive without being gaudy. Grabbing the bottle of wine, sparkling cider and the gifts she had picked up for them, she headed to Melinda's.
ilikebigwords1: "Mooom! I am busy!" She rolled her eyes and laid back on the bed.
CPerrinsS : Melinda sighed at the annoyance she heard in her daughter's voice. She left the kitchen and headed to her daughter's room. She didn't bother knocking and opened her room. "Angela why aren't you ready, our guest will be here soon?"
ilikebigwords1 : She popped up when she came in unannounced - something she *knew* she wasn't allowed to do and narrowed her eyes as she brushed her kinky, unruly curls from her face. She looked a lot like her mother, except she was a little shorter and much younger. Angela got out of bed. "Why do I need to be ready? It's your friend."
detobenson16 : She fidgeted in the taxi on the way over. She'd never been in a relationship with someone who had a child and now she was going to spend an important holiday with them. She tapped her fingers on her leg and kept biting and sucking gently on her lower lip.
CPerrinsS : Melinda took a deep breath to calm herself. "Angela we are having Christmas dinner together as a family and I invited Olivia to share that with us. I would really like you two to meet."
ilikebigwords1 : "She is not a part of this family," she said as her hands went to her hips.
CPerrinsS : "Don't take that tone with me young lady," Melinda stepped into her daughter's personal space.
ilikebigwords1 : She stood her ground. "What are you going to do? Leave me too? You left dad, and I have to have dinner with her."
detobenson16 : Liv paid the driver when he stopped at Melinda's building. Getting out, she did a quick inventory, making sure she had everything, and went into the building. As she rode up on the elevator, she blew out a nervous breath. "C'mon, Benson. Piece of cake..you will be fine," she muttered softly.
CPerrinsS : Melinda stepped back the anger subsiding when she heard the hurt tone in her daughter's voice. "Angela we talked about the situation between your father and me. It was the best decision for everyone involved."
ilikebigwords1 : "Whatever, mom. I'll go set the table, but I just want to be left alone."
detobenson16 : She stood at the door for a moment, trying to shoo away the butterflies in her stomach. Finally, she brush her hair back from her face a bit and knocked on the door.
CPerrinsS : "Just be nice Angela, that's all I ask." She checked her watch and right on cue there was a knock on the door. "Make sure to put out the plates with the Christmas decor." She hurried to answer the door.
ilikebigwords1 : Angela shoved her hands in her pockets and headed out of the room, then started setting the table.
detobenson16 : When Melinda answered the door, her nervous face broke out into a smile. "Merry Christmas."
CPerrinsS : Melinda smiled at Olivia when she opened the door. "Merry Christmas Olivia." She reached over and gave her hug.
detobenson16 : She returned the hug, carefully to not bop her with the bottles in her hands, and held her for just a moment. She knew with the kid around, that was as far as it would go today. Liv stepped away and offered her the bottles. "I brought some wine and sparkling cider for your daughter."
ilikebigwords1 : Angela remained quiet, but stole a glance at the detective. Whatever. Seeing her just drove home the fact that her family was full of freaks. She missed her dad. She finished setting the table and wandered back to her room.
CPerrinsS : "How thoughtful of you Liv." She took the drinks from the detective. She motioned for her to follow her into the kitchen. She could tell she was nervous. She grabbed her hand and gave it a quick squeeze. "Don't be nervous."
detobenson16 : "I'll try not to be." She returned the squeeze to Melinda's hand and laid her gifts by the tree as they passed by it. She looked around the apartment and smiled. "You have a great place here...I could put 3 of mine in it I think."
CPerrinsS : "Thanks Liv, sometimes I think it's just too much space for Angela and me. But it's close to her school and work's that far either." She looked at the table and was pleased that Angela had did what she asked. She looked around for her daughter and sighed when she didn't see her.
detobenson16 : She brushed a hand along her dress, pretending not to notice the sigh. "I'm really looking forward to this. I usually end up at Elliott's. This is a nice change."
CPerrinsS : Melinda turned back to Olivia and noticed her dress. The black dress fit the detective in all the right places and her heels really accentuated her muscled calves. "I really like your dress Olivia."
detobenson16 : She looked at Melinda with a, somewhat, demure smile. "I'm glad. I figured today warranted something more formal."
CPerrinsS : "You clean up very nicely Detective, she grinned at Liv. "I'm very happy that you are here."
ilikebigwords1 : Angela flopped back on her bed, headphones on, music blasting in her ears as she tapped away on her laptop.
detobenson16 : She chuckled softly and shrugged. "I figured it was time you saw me all dressed up. Thank you for inviting me...I hope it didn't create too much turmoil."
CPerrinsS : "Not anymore more than usual." She looked upstairs hearing her daughters movements. "Liv why don't you make yourself comfortable and I will go see what's keeping Angela."
detobenson16 : "Okay." She moved into the living room and looked around out of curiosity. She glanced over family photos, seeing how much alike mother and daughter looked, the art on the walls and finally the Christmas ornaments.
CPerrinsS : Melinda made her way upstairs. She decided to knock this time, she was angry before and just barged right in. She knocked softly on the door.
ilikebigwords1 : She heard the knock, even through the music. "Yeah?" She called at the door.
CPerrinsS : Melinda opened the door. "Angela, Olivia is here and I would like you to come down and meet her."
ilikebigwords1 : "Do I have to? I saw her, I set the table..."
detobenson16 : She sat on the couch and picked up a magazine from the coffee table, flipping through it as she waited. She was very relieved to see it wasn't some sort of Medical Examiner's journal or something.
CPerrinsS : Melinda narrowed her eyes at the whiney tone in her daughter's voice. "Angela it won't hurt you to come down and have dinner with us."
ilikebigwords1 : She emerged a minute later, dressed in her weekend jeans and a baggy hoodie. Her hands were jammed in her pockets and she paused. "I am not going to try to be friends with her."
CPerrinsS : Melinda put her arm around her daughter's shoulders. "All I ask is that you behave and try to be nice. She placed a kiss on her cheek.
ilikebigwords1 : She sighed, much like her mother did when she was frustrated, then walked down the steps. She looked at Olivia for a moment and smiled, then headed to the fridge for some tea.
detobenson16 : Olivia stood as they came downstairs and she returned Angela's smile, giving her a little wave in greeting. She started to speak to her, but then Angela left the room. She glanced to Melinda with a slight shrug. "One step at a time."
CPerrinsS : Melinda followed her daughter down the stairs and just shook her head. She walked over to Olivia. "Yeah one step at a time. Come on I will introduce you too. She grabbed the detective's hand made her way into the kitchen.
detobenson16 : She held onto Mel's hand, those butterflies making themselves known again, and walked into the kitchen with her. She looked to Angela and smiled warmly.
CPerrinsS : Melinda spotted Angela getting herself some tea. "Angela, honey I would like you to meet my friend Detective Olivia Benson."
ilikebigwords1 : Angela leaned against the counter, focusing on the tea in her hand. She looked up at Olivia and smiled a little. "Hi."
detobenson16 : "Merry Christmas, Angela. It's good to finally meet you." Liv pitched her voice to sound as friendly and reassuring as she could. "Your Mom's told me a lot about you."
CPerrinsS : Melinda looked from her daughter to Liv hoping all would ok.
ilikebigwords1 : She grimaced. "Oh," she said. "I wish I could say the same about you."
detobenson16 : Olivia shrugged it off and smiled softly. "Well, this will be a good time to get to know more about each other. Thank you for having me over for dinner...I usually end up with my partner and his family."
ilikebigwords1 : "I'm not having you over, mom is. My dad would normally be cooking, but she decided to be gay so now I am having dinner with you."
detobenson16 : Olivia almost smiled with her forthrightness and nodded. "Well, then maybe I should say...thank you for putting up with me?" She smiled at the teenager.
ilikebigwords1 : She shrugged and slipped passed them so she could go upstairs again. This sucked.
CPerrinsS : Melinda just stood there with her mouth open. She couldn't believe her daughter. "I'm sorry Olivia she promised me that she would be good."
detobenson16 : She lay a hand on Melinda's arm and smiled. "Honey, it's ok. She's doing the best she can, I'm sure. I wasn't very different when I was her age. Instead of a chip on my shoulder, I had a boulder."
CPerrinsS : Melinda laid her head on Liv's shoulder and just groaned. "What am I'm going to do with her?"
detobenson16 : She turned her head to kiss her temple. "Do you want me to try and talk to her?" It was her specialty after all, dealing with kids in turmoil...though most of them were usually victims.
CPerrinsS : Melinda lifted her head. "Give it your best shot I don't know how to get through to her anymore."
CPerrinsS : "I'm going to bring the food to the table see if you can convince to at least eat with us."
detobenson16 : She looked around to make sure the coast was clear. "A little kiss for luck and courage?"
CPerrinsS : Melinda grinned, she wrapped her arms around the detective and kissed her deeply.
detobenson16 : She pulled her close and returned the kiss, then grinned as she pulled back from it. "That was nice..for a little kiss."
CPerrinsS : "I thought you deserved something extra special. You are being such a good sport about all this.
detobenson16 : "Hold that thought. I might need you to kiss the wounds when I come out of her room." She slipped out of her arms and turned to the Christmas tree and picked up the small gift she got for Angela. Before going upstairs, she winked at her lover, then climbed the steps.
ilikebigwords1 : Angela stood just out of sight, but she saw it. It just... She hated it. She sat at the top of the steps and looked at her. "I don't need a pep talk."
CPerrinsS : Melinda tried to distract herself. She carefully got the food ready to bring to the table.
detobenson16 : She turned and brushed her dress down before sitting besides Angela. "I'm not here to give one, but you know...your Mom really loves you."
ilikebigwords1 : "No, it's not about that. She's ruining Christmas... no offense or anything, but you aren't my family."
detobenson16 : "No, I'm not. I never had much of a family and I came to learn that Christmas is also a time for friends. Your Mom and I have been friends, and part of a family of sorts, over 10 years now. It's nice she invited me over." She looked at the teenager and smiled softly. "Why are you really angry with her? It started way before Christmas."
ilikebigwords1 : "I don't know you, and I am seeing a shrink. I don't want to talk about it."
detobenson16 : She grinned and nodded. "Fair enough...I'm not trying to shrink you, Angela. I'm not the enemy though." She handed over her present. "I picked this up for you."
CPerrinsS : Melinda was getting nervous waiting in the kitchen. It was quiet, she didn't hear any screams for help so that was a good sign, she tried to tell herself.
ilikebigwords1 : She looked at it. "I don't want it," she said softly. "Look, I'm sure you are nice, but... my Christmas is totally ruined. Just go chill with mom."
detobenson16 : "C'mon...take it. It doesn't bite or leave sticky fingerprints on your stuff." She smiled to the girl softly. "You are a part of your Mom's Christmas. If you want me to, I will leave."
ilikebigwords1 : "No, stay. I don't really care."
CPerrinsS : Melinda was startled by the oven timer going off. Get hold of yourself Melinda she thought. She turned the oven off and check to make sure the turkey was done.
detobenson16 : She lay the Christmas present between them and nodded. "Okay, but come down and have dinner with us. It would upset your Mom if you didn't. She does really love you and that's important...you'll see that when you're older."
ilikebigwords1 : She nodded. "Okay. Then I am coming back up. Just... tell mom to chill out."
CPerrinsS : Melinda brought the last of the food to the table. She wondered if she should let them know dinner was ready or wait for one of them to come down.
detobenson16 : She smiled softly. "Okay." She stood and walked down the steps and to the kitchen. She quietly took the wine bottle and found the corkscrew to open it with. "She'll come down to dinner."
detobenson16 : "Oh, and she said to...'chill out.' I didn't know kids used that phrase anymore." She grinned as she popped the cork.
CPerrinsS : Melinda was glad to see Olivia. "Thank you for talking with her. I will try my best to chill out." She grabbed two wineglass from the cabinet and set them down.
detobenson16 : She chuckled softly and filled the glasses halfway. Putting down the bottle, she gave one of the goblets to Melinda. "To Christmas."
CPerrinsS : Melinda picked up her wine and raised it to Liv's toast. She finished her wine in one swallow. She grinned when Liv raised her brows at her. "It's to help me chill." She held her glass out for a refill.
detobenson16 : She laughed softly and refilled her glass. She sipped hers more sedately and they made small talk as they waited for Angela.
ilikebigwords1 : Angela came down and sat at the table silently. It all looked good, but it seemed foreign.
detobenson16 : Olivia's relief had gifted her by coming in an hour early and relieving her for the night. She had been able to go home, have a quick shower and dress nicely for dinner.
