Amazing

I just had the most amazing evening. For my ex's birthday, I dragged him down to City Winery to see Mike Doughty and Andrew "Scrap" Livingston perform their award-winning Question Jar show, promoting the new Stellar Motel CD.

OMG.
OMG.
OMG.

Mike played an assortment of electrical and acoustic instruments (an assortment of guitars, banjo, electric...mandolin?) and his partner played phenomenal cello. I only cried twice (or maybe 3 times) due to the combination of nostalgia, mood, and incredible live performance. They had a stageworthy improv standup-y thing going in between instrument changes, where they riffed off the questions written down by audience members and pulled from the eponymous "question jar" onstage.

This is also the venue you want to go to if you are like me and older, want seats, excellent acoustics, a small audience, and fabulous food and wine to go with your entertainment. Seats are reserved and are either tables or bar stools. We had an obstructed view, so there was a big flatscreen TV showing the performance right in front of us, which was perfect.

The menu rocked: a Murray's Cheese-curated cheese board! Excellent wines by the glass or bottle! The scallops were fantastic and the speck, tallegio, sage, and butternut flatbread was phenomenal. (The charcuterie board was also great, and the brussels sprouts were fine but mine are better.).

It was food for the body and food for the soul. I cannot remember the last time I had such a satisfying experience; Mike Doughty's resonant voice was served well by the pared-down instrumentation, and the cellist was just a joy. Hilariously, he got absolutely none of the Soul Coughing references. Mike was thrilled every time one went over his head.

(The only drawback was the woman two seats over from me who sang along to, like, everything. Very audibly. Just about every time I was going to say something the ask her to stop, she'd pause for a bit. I don't blame her for the impulse, but COME ON. I want to hear THEM, not YOU.)

If you've found your way here, you are probably looking for further specifics, though, right?

In general, I love banter and humor and don't really care for character bashing. For relationshippy fics, I love first times, pining, and happy endings. (Any rating is fine with me.) For gen fics, I really enjoy characters finding something that changes them or that they are willing to change for.

If you're stuck for ideas, I do enjoy good outside POV stories, casefic, AUs, and surprise BAMF-iness.

If you want to consult someone who knows what I like, shayheyred is a good bet!

I hope you enjoy having an excuse to write for one of these smaller fandoms, and please feel free to explore whatever you want to, if you're so inspired. Two quick recs for stories that I loved but haven't noticed a ton of mentions for yet (disclaimer: I am not feeling all that that observant, so they may be somewhat redundant after all).

Why Charlie Brooker's 38-Point Plan to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse is Doomed To Fail
[British Comedian RPF, Charlie Brooker/David Mitchell]
Not actually about zombies! This is charming and snappish and hilarious, and TBH you don't really need to know who Charlie Brooker and David Mitchell are to enjoy it, but it is so much more brilliant if you do, because the voices are fantastic.

Charlie notices, to his growing apprehension, that he's not the only one who is apparently a little bit smitten with David Mitchell. Feeling increasingly threatened after watching the latest episode of QI he makes a list of people he might one day have to fight for David's affection. He calls it a hit list at first, just for fun, but after some consideration he changes it. When MI5 goes through his computer, as they will inevitably do one day, it may be hard to explain the joke. He leaves women off the list, because frankly, they are in a completely different league to Charlie, and anyway, David seems to be doing a fine job of keeping them away himself.

Little Soldier
[Despicable Me, Margo-centric, gen]
Margo is amazing in this, and it's all so in the spirit of the movie -- both whimsical and serious, and all about family. And about how sometimes you just have to teach yourself how to hotwire a car and drive to Gran's house to save them.

The POV is great because while Margo may not fully grasp everything that's going on, it's there for us to pick up on -- and there's a dinner party and an exploding (inanimate) squirrel and a lesson in leverage underneath.

She went cold inside her head, like she had the freeze ray inside her. She stared at Gran and Gran stared back at her for a long while, with a strange expression. Finally she nodded.

“I should've known you got it the most,” she said quietly.

I was getting anxious when it was after 1 PM and none of the things I was home waiting for had happened yet!

The charity pickup person arrived.

Whew! Now I am tucked away in my bedroom, separated from all the kitchen painting by a living room in identity crisis -- no couch or coffee table, but overflowing with kitchen goods and empty shelving.

It's okay, little living room! I will de-kitchenify you in a day or two, and give you a makeover of your own soon.

SON OF ETA - Wow, I sure hope you haven't been watching this space, waiting for me to post so you can finally start writing! It's a bit late for a real Dear Yulegoat letter, so I'll be brief:

Let me first say that I am profoundly grateful you're writing me anything at all! I would be super-excited to get any one of these fandoms, so whatever you choose, I will be overjoyed. Thank you. (And of course, don't forget -- OPTIONAL DETAILS ARE OPTIONAL.)

Beyond that, I tend to love banter, getting-together stories (whether they're true first times or not), humor, longing, imperfection, and badassery. I'm not fond of character bashing or anything that oozes schmoop. Be as explicit or G-rated as you like! I'm hard to squick but definitely don't need to have sex in a story. And although most of my likes above lend themselves to funny, happy stories, please write whatever you feel like or fits the source -- for instance, I wouldn't expect a hilarious farce for a Waking the Moon story. (Although I bet someone could make it work. Somehow.)

I got my stitches out today! My right hand is healing well, and now I have physical therapy exercises to do along with instructions to apply lotion & massage the scar multiple times a day.

Left hand gets operated on on Wednesday, same deal as the first.

My right hand already feels better than it did prior to the release procedure. If anybody out there is on the fence about whether to have carpal tunnel release surgery, I *highly* recommend it. I mean, my surgeon's kind of a rock star, but I believe it's a fairly straightforward undertaking regardless.

Okay, so Stiles has drag queens on speed dial. This is possibly the greatest revelation of the episode, IMO.

But, see, I don't picture him actually taking down their numbers, not the way the scene in the club episode was set up. Really, I think one of the ladies snatched his phone out of his hand when he was, like, awkwardly pretending to get a text or check the time. And promptly sent texts to herself and all the other drag queens.

And now they all have HIS number.

So ever since then, he keeps getting texts from unrecognized numbers throughout the day.

And at first it was kind of unsettling and possibly embarrassing. Because practically everything has an innuendo in it! But they're really funny, too. And funny + innuendo = Stiles's native language. So it stops feeling weird and starts being one of the better parts of his day, when he gets unprompted texts from people calling him "cutie," complaining about bigoted asshats and just plain old regular asshats and making sure he remembers that it's liquor THEN beer.

And maaaaaaaaybe he might let a few things slip. Like how nobody even believes that he could be gay, despite his definite willingness to give it a go. He could be! Derek's abs definitely make an argument in that direction! Or how he's maybe on Lydia's radar but he's still not important to her. People think she's ready for a straightjacket, but she's still not crazy enough to want to date him. And how he feels guilty about keeping potentially life-saving, -threatening, or -altering secrets from people (Dad. Lydia.) who are so important to him. No, he's not going to tell "mama." Because they're secrets, that's why!

And so on and so forth. I don't know. I just really like the idea, although he'd probably feel even worse about getting them all to show up at a party where they get non-consensually drugged up and possibly placed in mortal danger, if that were the case.

I had this really amazing dream this morning? And I woke up, all, "Awesome idea! I just have to write it down and it will make the most fabulous Derek/Stiles fic" but on further consideration, there was nothing to it except, oh yeah, they were having sex.
