I liked the first one so much I ended up doing it again! Twice over! It's an interesting trip down memory lane, for sure. I'm going to try to give a bit more context of the ones I remember better. (Quick note: I make icons with my old laptop so I'll try to find the original screencaps here. I have a large-but-clearly-not-large-enough collection of textures and unfortunately most have no credit... Just ask! And building on that, icons sometimes look different, particularly in regards to sharpening, from one laptop to the other because of resolution.) Also, these got very long this time around because I detailed a bit more of the process and definitely gave a lot of context. I tried to give context and thoughts if I remembered about them.

These were the three icons novindalf picked :D

I made this Anne/Gilbert (Shilbert?) icon for itsabattlefield around Valentine's Day, for a Five Icons - One Couple short battle. I have said it many times but I love challenges where the themes are specific in its looseness, if that makes sense. (Otherwise, my muse feels... limited? Pressured? Who the heck knows.) This was a perfect challenge in that sense! I finished binging Anne with an E in early February so I kind of wanted to make icons about it. So I did! (As the story goes, I also made two extra sets because I liked it a lot. But this one is the good set.)

The best part of this post is going to be that I got the idea for this icon during my commute. Maybe it wasn't composed exactly like this one but I knew I wanted to make with the subjects centered and floating (and something on the cut-off to hide the straight line). In the end, I think this worked out even better? This frame texture evokes that time period for me. I also like the color composition (literally all of the blue/grey/green-ish colors I tried kind of looked beautiful - this is all curves + color balance + selective coloring + low opacity gradients). It looks simple but it's also one of my best icons this year? It's definitely one I'm quite proud of.

I made this for the "Remake" elitesimplicity challenge last year and whenever I make icons for those challenges, I try to keep them beautiful without overcomplicating myself. "A Star is Born" was an obvious pick (and even a suggested remake) and this is one of the most popular caps (and one of the prettiest ones).

This screencap leads itself to a close crop (it's a closeup, duh) so... that is how I cropped it. I played with the coloring, mostly with greens and my usual natural colors. I do recall I had to use the brush with brown around the upper right (hair and eyebrow) because it got a tad too green over there when I used a couple of lighting textures. I think that's still noticeable in parts so my cover is blown! Then it was about getting the sharpening right so the tear was noticeable and so were the other details. Overall, I like it! I think that it truly lives up the simplicity of the community.

Beth Pearson from This is Us. I love her. TIU is a show I enjoy watching and should probably icon more but I either can't find the screencaps I want or I just... forget?
It's part of the set I made for itsabattlefield's Close vs. Far (a big battle from last September, here's the post in my graphics comm). I was quite inactive over the summer because the project I was working on got quite intense for a bit. Then I installed Sims 4 in this laptop (I got it on the older one) and... started playing after work, even when I finally got the shortened schedule, because it simply allowed me to relax. I also went on vacation in between and all... so this is a very long way of saying I felt and was rusty when I made this set but I wanted to get back on the saddle.

I do like the crop and the colors in the icon quite a bit. I don't know if I have the psd for this one around but I probably used some selective coloring and color balance + maaaaybe red curves to get those glowy colors? I like the way the icon frames her face and her distraught expression. Nice use of light/shadows.
The set ended up being quite pink/purple-ish, which was unintentional at first but really works. (Around that time, I was obsessed with cohesiveness. Then again, if you've seen my latest the7days set... you know I still am in some ways.) Out of all those icons, this one was one of my favorites, if noy my outright favorite.

And these were the ones that wunderkind_lucy chose!

This is a recent-ish icon from my TV tropes set last month! I can see a few things about what my icons have been looking like as of late: grunge-y textures in the background, (mostly not-great) attempts at text work. But in this one case, it fits because if anyone has seen a TWW around as of late, it might've been this one. (For context, the actual scene this screencap is from is this one, which highlights his undying loyalty towards his friends. Wholly different theme/trope.)

The biggest challenge I faced while making icons for this challenge - and Josh was a prime example of this - was that some of the character tropes that came to mind are mostly personality traits that just don't translate into icons (like the sarcastic quips they all have -- we all know I am bad at text). In this case, the quote is very Josh and his expression in the icon just fit perfectly with the sentiment of that quote (and it fits the trope I did end up going with, combat pragmatist). I thought it would be fun to make the quote with a fancy handwriting font to make it come off as a nicer message than it is. I then used a different font to emphasize the second part of the text. The rest of it is fairly simple -- I cut most of Josh and the table with quick selection + eraser and colored it. I went with a light purple-ish palette and added that lavender color to the text to bring it all together. The lighting is also nice, leaving him front and center.

I don't think I made this one as a specific icon for anything, haha. It's likely I found the cap while looking for some for the first Partner Battle with wunderkind_lucy and it caught my attention even if neither of us chose it. This is another screencap that is ideal for a close crop so that's what I went with. I don't think I did anything special with it, other than going for a close, centered crop. It's colored naturally, with a bit more attention to the lips and the eyes (and some sharpening that looked good, most likely with daubs at 50%?). Did I add some additional lighting texture/gradient? Quite possibly. It's one I like a lot but it's one of the simplest, most straight-forward icons I've made lately.

It was a January icon made for monthlyinspo, for their bingo round. I want to say that was their last round for a while, wasn't it? At least the last 20-icon set one, I wanna say (definitely the last "competitive" 20-icon set I made - I kind of made an unofficial one in November from when work was manageable and not a nightmare... good times). Anyhow, I'm digressing once more. I'm really proud of that entire set as a whole. With comms like this one and particularly in those challenges (and the exposure I know they might have), I try to push myself, and, as luck would have it, I was productive then. It feels weird to think about the month I started working and how relatively easy and calm things were, and comparing that to this January or even just now... but I was.
The screencap itself does feature all of Elizabeth but I thought it would be use some interesting crop that would allow me to have some negative space. Thus I used the quick selection tool + eraser (it's my method for negative space 90% of the time; worked well in this case) and decided to go with a light green -- a color I might not use a lot but would fit the colors of the screencap.
By itself, it looks good (this example is from an even closer crop I considered, too; had no idea I had one uploaded to Imgur). It looked good up till then but I added some light to it, so I played with gradients and the gradient light textures I love. That was a good first step. Then I kept thinking and wondered, "why don't I add a random texture and see if it works?" (clearly inspired by better and more inspired iconmakers than myself). And this one by soaked set to screen and rotated 90 degrees looked beautiful? I wouldn't say it's a perfect icon by any means but it looked really cool. And since it kind of goes with Elizabeth's safari outfit and the colors... I really dig this icon, hehe. And like I said, I'm impressed by some of the icons that are on that set.
(I was suprised it wasn't picked as the favorite from my set as that round - the Midge icon, which looks great, did.)

This was fun! Definitely explained myself a lot more. I'll probably go back to the first part and give some more detail. In fact, I am posting this one now so I stop talking.

Chidi, The Good Place

This is a fun one! It's one of my older userpics (and an older icon in general, dating back to July? August? 2018). It's Chidi from The Good Place, a character I related to quite a bit. I am pretty sure I was inspired by this awesome icon by zackkaddy but mine is nowhere as good (obviously). I do love the simplicity of this one, particularly the soft blues all around, but text... has never been my forte. I like to think it still works as a whole and that it's pretty cute. FWIW, this wasn't probably the face he made when Eleanor called him yet it just fit the text quite well that I had to use it for this.

Josh and Donna, The West Wing

From one of my oldest userpics to one of the most recent... I made this J/D icon for the TV Tropes challenge (see here). I recently decided to switch my TWW icons up and felt like I could use a different non-CJ icon... finding TWW icons I like is difficult (there isn't a lot out there! Most of the ones I find and like have that Photobucket watermark... or just hurt in these times). I liked this one because it's ~~simple (my brand, essentially) but I like the trio of colors in it: the screencap itself had that yellow/brown and that pink from Donna's shirt so I just played with them a bit more. That frame texture has been one of my favorites lately and I think it gives the icon a bit of oomph that, at the very least, it kind of highlighted the momentousness of the Big Damn Kiss trope and of this long-awaited moment.

Crowley and Aziraphale, Good Omens

This icon is also fairly recent from February... which feels like it was two years ago at this point. I made this starting from one of the icons I made for the Five Layers challenge at elitesimplicity earlier this year... Basically expanding what I would've probably done had I had no limit as to how many layers I could use, adding a couple of gradients and a bunch of light textures, haha. (For reference, this is the original five-layer icon.) I am a recent Good Omens fan and I really loved this first scene -- I found the gesture of Aziraphale extending his wing adorable. I think I've had the icon in both LJ and DW at one point but at the moment it's just over on DW. (I need to add a few more icons over there.)

It was fun reminiscing about these icons and I probably could've said a bunch more things, hehe. (And if you're interested in learning more about my userpics in either LJ or DW, drop me a comment!)

Week-to-week-ish: The pandemic has significantly reduced what I watch. I miss TV in general. Also, it's no secret I started watching For Life for the plot and this month? It feels like this is the month wherer it's started giving me lots of plot. I'm so thankful for that. fandom10in30 · remakes: I'm just super proud of this set and the composition work. Even if many were from 2018 (my most productive year), I think it showed growth... and how, when I'm inspired, I do good things.
the7days · 7 genres: I like the range of complexity (for me) in this one, tbh. I like how it looks and how I could've kept going.
somein30 · Muted & Vibrant: I think the other set for somein30 had some pretty individual icons but this set? I just really love how they came out in general.

I am cross-posting this to my journal, since that's where all my icons were posted in 2018. I also felt it was time to update this, since I've been so damn busy with work and many personal things.

I was part of bestof_icons and its activities for its 2018 cycle these past few months. Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate and/or vote for any of my icons! It was truly interesting learning what icons people liked the most. I am generally quite critical of what I make and can't choose which ones I'd like most, so reading the nice comments people made and all that was slightly overwhelming.

I finally decided to start posting on that comm I created months ago! I previously used for tests but I decided it'd be better suited to post icons. I used to post icons to my comm in my other life/LJ, ~~eight-nine years~~ centuries ago. Feel free to join or watch or not! :)

I've been working on these icons for over three weeks, and if it were for me, I'd keep going until the deadline, lol. I decided to post them because I had waaaay too many already and it was becoming harder to choose which ones I would use. I'm not sure I'm happy with them, either. I only know I'm exhausted from work and have little inspiration lately. (Things are going okay, I guess? I've just been taking online courses and will start the actual job in the next couple of days. I'm terrified.)

I'll hopefully work on getting a couple quick challenges done over the next few days 🤞 Hope you all are doing great! Wish I had more time to be around (and let me know if I missed any big posts from you I should check out!).

Some personal news: I have been pretty absent this week because I started working and, even if I'm only doing only programming courses in a language I hadn't worked with before, I'm pretty beat by the time I get home. Good thing I have made a bunch of Bingo icons for monthlyinspo (I just need to be happy with them and/or make another 20. Probably find the combos that look nicest) so I'm not super behind. Look for them over at holyinterruptus in the next couple of weeks. I could've sworn the deadline was Jan 25 (it seemed too short) but I'm happy it got moved back. What I'm trying to say -- I'll vote in all the polls so far over the weekend, hopefully, and I'd appreciate if you voted in my poll. I'll be voting in all the open ones this afternoon.

2018 icon progression

I'm not sure if I'm doing this right or not but here we go. Another chance for me to ramble about my icons! To actually select a few of my own favorites... Yikes. (As we might be about to find out, imposter syndrome runs deep within me.) Most icons look plain weird/bad in my new computer so I might sound more insecure than usual.

I'm posting this here vs. holyinterruptus because that would be the 2019 space, I'm guessing. I think it's easier to watch a comm than to friend someone ~~because that's how I am too~~.
I'll slowly add some commentary to the icons (hover for that) and whatever links might be missing. Some thoughts/month context under the spoiler tag. It was hard to choose just a handful of historamedy icons to put in here but oh well. Here we go...

In a few words: resolutions, different tutorials/techniques.

What is January if not the one month where you try to keep up with your resolutions? One of mine was getting out there and participating, even if I stumbled. Top line are icons I entered for capicontest; bottom line are 3 for tv_movie_icons and 1 for birthday_celebs.

I actually like these! I could've probably chosen a couple more (lbr I should've chosen less). All of these were somewhat difficult: I haven't really worked with pastel that much though it always looks nice -- I just don't think I can pull it off. Resolutions were about originality or working on not using the same color; trying to follow different tutorials or doing what feels right. Gosh, it's been almost a year and I still remember playing around to get that XF icon. I don't think my coloring is always successful but I like it.
There was a starting to the glowy/gaussian blur in there and some background work but nothing too drastic.
Shoutout to that Runaways icon with the cool hair effect. The proudest I've felt trying that technique out.

In a sentence... Self imposed hiatus from PS. Rusty. Basic texture work, simple backgrounds.
Why am I putting these two together? Because I was surprised to find out I even made something these months! I feel like 80% of them are from March, though, since that's when spring break was.
It makes sense I don't have much for these two months (and nothing for April): around early February, I decided not to enter icon challenges or scroll down LJ that much. I was still watching TV but was solely focused on my Master's thesis (long story short: things had started to go very wrong in January/February and had to get it done in just a few weeks).
I did binge a thirtysomething old show named thirtysomething -- and I would ocassionally screencap frames I liked from the awful online streaming sites I was originally watching them in (the DVDs were a vast improvement but still not great quality... it was the 80s). Most of the icons I made around this time, if not all, were from season 1. I waited to get to the other screencaps much later. I remade a lot of these later in the year, using different textures, except for top middle. I have a soft spot for the colored light textures and the simplicity of it -- the autumn look it has.

I also made a few spare icons from things I thought of but I barely opened PS if it wasn't to edit a few thesis pics. (I also watched Studio 60 in February, I should add. The episode I iconed made me shortcircuit in all the best ways. Top right isn't my favorite icon I've made with that cap but still.)

In a sentence... Getting back on the saddle; trying to experiment with backgrounds.
A very TWW heavy month!
Much like I did when I finished my finals back in Dec'17, I decided to work on a big challenge set (then, monthlyinspo; this time, character20n20). I was very rusty but I wanted to get back on the saddle. What better way than to make icons that fit different themes? I added my own challenges (trying not to use the same caps I used for the August entry, try to have even rep across all seven seasons, try to make the Cat/AC icons somewhat cohesive, etc.) but I actually like a bunch of the results, even if I'd remake many of them now. I continued experimenting with backgrounds and how they worked with color. Some experimentation with hair that doesn't look too great.
This was also the month I started my historamedy365 set and got to work on a few more thirtysomething caps. For this progression, I'm using my LJ+imgur gallery and realizing a few I never posted a couple icons I randomly made for challenges I never entered. And there a couple of tv_movie_icons challenges and a few icons probably meant for challenges I never entered.

In a sentence... Lighting and textures experimentation! Trying to trust my instincts.
This is where it gets hard. I have no idea what I made when! I didn't make much in June, I'd say, and what I did continued developing my own style and technique -- I tend to gravitate to intense/vibrant, but mostly true-to-life colorings, and simple textures.
I mostly worked on icons for stock communities like basic_icontest and my first foray into elitesimplicity (+ the usual historamedy365). I'm not used to working with stock pictures so it was a challenge (my problem is mostly choosing pics) but I got a few awards for the sets. It might've been posted on July 1st but I promise the private preview post on my journal is dated a few days earlier. So let's put it in a gray area :) I kind of don't like how most of my stock icons come out but some actually look really nice.

In a sentence... Closer crops and intense, vibrant coloring that was very summery. Or so I thought.
Again, some gray area due to deadlines but the Beth icon is on Imgur before Lorelai's so I'm going to allow it. itsabattlefield came into my life in July and inspired to make me more icons with different themes. I can't always enter but I love playing around with the themes. In this case, as with much of the year, I tried to make vibrant icons with the occasional mild experimentation (everything I did in the TIU icon was random even if it looks rather simple). I kinda like that Charlie's icon's weird painted effect -- it's not a perfect icon by any means (it was for a 'no face' historamedy theme) but it's experimentation. I definitely see a lot of the trends from June in these icons.

In a sentence... Productive and kinda creative - lots of variety. Attempts at improving my technique.
I'm adding more icons to this month because I was so productive! I was home alone for 2 weeks and that's what happens, lol. (It wasn't supposed to be like that and it was hard but I love my me time, ha.) I actually like a lot of what I made and how it came out even if it's more of the same. I feel like my background work got better/cleaner, and I was a bit more imaginative this time around. I thought my first set for makiiing10in30 was pretty nice and that my big sets for itsabattlefield were kind of nice as well. There were lots of trying out different contrast and lighting in my icons, some textures, definitely textwork, etc. I see it as a productive, and somewhat creative month (for me), as I worked on icons to forget what wasn't going so great.

In a sentence... Colorful! Lots of fake background work. Apparent simplicity.
Completing this is when I realized I had never posted the five actual Short Battle 6 icons in that big itsabattlefield post! Yikes, hashtag human distaster.
I wasn't too productive this month but I was happy with some of the entries I churned out, particularly the Humans ones (a show I've never watched), and the aforementioned colored ones. Apparently, I enjoyed creating around colors this year even if palettes are still intimidating to me. This month I was bolder with colors and tried different crops instead of just going for center. (Hard to believe that I liked the weird crops when I made icons forever ago.)

In a line... Personal difficulty and laptop at the shop meant no muse.
There is surprisingly little in October -- partly due to the fact I had laptop problems so I was laptop-less for a couple of weeks, starting at the end of September. Then, as a result, I had to reinstall PS and I dragged my feet because I had lots of other things going on. I also had some rough days as I faced my rl harsh realities and had to reconsider my future plans. It's amazing I made as much as I did in November considering the first couple of weeks of that month weren't just better. I tried to get back to finishing historamedy this month, too. So let's consider October as 'busy' and 'getting back to my roots.' And apparently, textured backgrounds!

In a line... One of my favorite months, output-wise. Tried to icon different fandoms and color them. Color through textures. Uh, the usual, then.
I was a bit more active and I somehow got invited into the7days (I sat agape for a long time when I got that message!). Inspiration wasn't there for their Nuts challenge but I felt the inspiration coming back... As things were starting to right themselves, I was a bit more inspired. The main two posts I worked on were the Small Battle 8 for itsabattlefield and elitesimplicity s non-English challenge, both once things in rl had calmed down. Both would probably be some of my favorite entries into anything this year. I focused on color and getting it from textures.
Fun fact: the Profesor/Raquel icon on the bottom right was one I hadn't been too sure about at first (their faces look too yellow!) but it's one that's gotten some praise, so thank you!

In a line... I think I ended on a high? Tried to make more cohesive batches, more original icons... and I liked most of the remakes I made.
So productive I almost ended up adding another row! I was a bit more free and in a better place now that I had a job and started in mid-Jan (even if it wasn't where I wanted). I participated in the7days's 360 challenge, swearing words for your_favourites and remade a few icons for bestof_icons (all of those remakes but Wonder Woman's were made in 2018). I was a bit more absent because my brother came back from university for a few weeks and I wanted to enjoy that time with him, which meant I couldn't even work on a new 7days set for the small fandoms (which is me). Overall, I felt a bit more confident on what I was doing, especially with selecting the subjects and cropping the rest. I started to do fake backgrounds with different opacities (as I had done at times) that could highlight the textures or the other work around. The Nancy/Elliot in bottom middle is a fake/recolored icon. (I'm amazed it looks natural. WHY.)
And I also see darker icons are emerging, perhaps more in accordance with the time of the year.

So, in summary:

I don't know if I see an absolute progression or a zomg! she's extraordinary. I'm okay and I'm having fun, and that's all that counts.
Compared to 2017's icons? Sure! Compared to those icons I was making ten years ago (~~cough, sunny_raining, cough~~)? Absolutely, and I haven't dared myself look at them. I guess that, much like with personal progress, it is difficult to see it when you're just coming off of it. 2018 wasn't the best year personally but I had time to work on making icons. I'm a big believer in doing what feels fun and trying out because, the more you do something, the more naturally (or easily) things come to you. I don't think the Elena from last January could work with backgrounds like I do now (not that I am that great!).

I still remember how I randomly decided to work on icons again in July 2017 because I felt like it. Those icons were not great but I was productive. I feel like I now have a personal style that I can comfortably fall back to even if I want to improve! I want to make great compositions! I want to do blocking! I want to create text that doesn't make me wanna hide under a rock! I don't know if starting a new job in a couple of weeks will allow me to focus on that but I'm going to try.

I like my glowy/Gaussian blur enhancements and color plays, I like my vibrant colors and my textures. I am still somewhat scared of participating within the community because I feel like an outsider but let's see what 2019 brings!

I wanted to give a shoutout to itsabattlefield, which is a wonderful little community with weekly challenges/battles. (I could explain how it works but you can check out the different types over here or simply read the instructions for any of the latest challenges. It's very easy.) I feel as if a good percentage of the icons I've made in the second half of the year were for this community -- certainly a couple of my favorite icons I've made this year were a result of some battle. What I'm saying... The more members, the merrier :) Come join in the fun!

It was so hard to choose four! Like I said on that post, I wanted in so I rushed to make them. Hence, the lack of alts (you know there'd be like 10 more icons). But I'll explain why I chose these in particular, apart from 'I love these couples':
* CJ and Danny: one word: HANDS. HANDS. I can't with the hands. I love the scene as is but that detail... I would've chosen the one in the episode after (the tie!)but somehow the lighting was even darker. It also wasn't as amazing. My brain full of stupid fun facts wants me to add that, per Allison Janney, that was her first on-screen kiss ever so yeah. (And she might've extended that to the theater work up till then? Idk.)
* Chidi and Eleanor: they've had very few thus far though it's likely about to change. I did love how sweet this episode was and this shot was nice.
* Ben and Leslie: they have many that stand out, like the engagement or wedding ones but the first one... gah. I still remember squealing when it happened - especially since I had gotten as frustrated as the two of them by all the cockblocking in the episode. This cap is just begging to be played with.
* Booth and Brennan: there were approximately a hundred to choose from (okay, much less than that) but I went with the wedding because it looks so pretty and I'm simple. There are so many ones I kept thinking about after the fact that would've made for good icons. Argh, if only I hadn't lost all those screencaps I had for the show :/

Random icons: thirtysomething edition
I just realized I never got to post a few of the thirtysomething icons I made in May (some in February!).

Some I'm obviously reworking and using as challenge entries (see: Nancy in the bed, a cap of Elliot and Nancy in the hospital I've used for similar icons a few times). For the most part, they are new ones, like the three in the small and big battles.
Since for 3-ish seasons I was streaming online, the caps' quality was dire. (I was screenshotting frames I liked as big as I could!) I only had DVDs for the last couple of seasons, when I got tired of buffering. (And right now, they're in a box all the way in Florida. Are you guys aware of how much I want to do a 20in20 with my problematic man-child Elliot? Or just icons in general? Quite a bit.)

I can't wait to tackle some of the caps again! (Hint hint: some might show up in future challenges.) (And I didn't add them all so I could have a round number of icons in this post. Oops.)

Ten icons for makiiing10in30 round 1: Colors.

The challenge was to make five icons in one of the colors, and five in black and white. I had a lot of alternates (mostly in other colors, *cough*blue*cough) that I might keep playing with. I like to think of green as the wavelength/color the Sun emits most of its energy in, hehe. Plus, it also looked really nice. I found this community fairly recently (read: over the weekend?) and wanted to get something in asap.

The results are mostly basic icons, with lighting and simple textures, but I wanted to potentiate the colors that were already there. I also wanted to have some sort of progression/transition in the color, with different shades of green/grayscale. Also, imgur decided to stop working/uploading some of my icons today so I had to use an alternative. I'll most definitely change it to the imgur links once I'm able to upload anything again.

A few more in here. Though I'm making an effort to organize by challenge and community, I don't exactly remember what was entered and which one were extras. Sorry! This time around, the entries are not really chronologically e(as in, some icons for a community might be the last ones I've made).

Icon Dump, Part 1: Stock Challenges

Welp, long time no write.

If there is anything I've worked on this summer, it's been making icons for challenges. (For some reason, I like having a theme to work off from rather than just playing around like I was doing when I got back into this.)

For almost half this year, I laid pretty low so I could focus on finishing grad school and whatnot. I'm going to assume I posted those and get on for the stuff from May on. When I started to prepare this post, I realized I had way too many icons to put it in just one post. I also missed some challenges I definitely wanted to enter because I kept forgetting when they were due. Time goes by fast, y'all.
