{"id":64423,"date":"2016-09-20T10:30:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-20T14:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lowendmac.com\/?p=64423"},"modified":"2025-05-10T11:33:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T15:33:22","slug":"macos-sierra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2016\/macos-sierra\/","title":{"rendered":"macOS Sierra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time since Apple released <a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2012\/os-x-10-8-mountain-lion\/\">OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion<\/a> in July 2012, Apple has dropped support for a number of older Macs that had supported OS X 10.8 through <a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2015\/os-x-10-11-el-capitan\/\">10.11 El Capitan<\/a>. No MacBook and iMac models prior to Late 2009 and no MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Pro models prior to 2010 are officially supported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/macos\/sierra-preview\/\">macOS Sierra<\/a>, although workarounds have been developed for most unsupported 2008 and 2009 Macs.<span id=\"more-38062\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38065 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/macos-sierra-screen.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lowendmac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/macos-sierra-screen.jpg 512w, https:\/\/lowendmac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/macos-sierra-screen-160x100.jpg 160w, https:\/\/lowendmac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/macos-sierra-screen-320x200.jpg 320w\" alt=\"macOS Sierra\" width=\"512\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mac OS X is no longer being called <em>OS X,<\/em> and Apple is not promoting Sierra with a version number either (however, it is internally identified as <em>OS X 10.12<\/em>). Now it\u2019s simply <em>macOS Sierra<\/em> \u2013 in keeping with iOS, tvOS, and watchOS.<\/p>\n<p>macOS Sierra was released on Sept. 20, 2016 and officially requires a supported Mac with at least 2 GB of system memory and 8.8 GB of available storage space. (We recommend at least 4 GB of RAM.)<\/p>\n<h3>Officially Supported Macs<\/h3>\n<p>All Late 2009 and later MacBook and iMac models are supported in macOS Sierra, as are all 2010 and newer MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Pro computers.<\/p>\n<h3>Hacking macOS Sierra for Unsupported Macs<\/h3>\n<p>Hardware requirements for macOS Sierre include a CPU with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SSE4#SSE4.1\">SSE4.1<\/a>, so it cannot be run on any Mac with a CPU prior to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penryn_(microarchitecture)\">Penryn Core 2 Duo<\/a>. In theory, it should be possible to get Sierra running on any Penryn or later Mac. It may be possible to swap out the Merom CPU in some Macs for a Penryn, which would then allow Sierra to run.<\/p>\n<p>Sierra can run with 4 GB of system memory, but as with all recent versions of OS X, more memory will allow it to run even better.<\/p>\n<p>Colin Mistr has published a <a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2016\/macos-sierra-on-low-end-macs\/\">macOS Sierra Patch Tool<\/a>, which currently allows you to install and run macOS Sierra on the following officially unsupported hardware:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2008\/imac-early-2008\/\">Early 2008 iMac<\/a> or later<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2008\/aluminum-macbook-late-2008\/\">Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody MacBook<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2009\/macbook-white-mid-2009\/\">Mid 2009 MacBook (white)<\/a> or later<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2008\/13-macbook-air-late-2008\/\">Late 2008 MacBook Air<\/a> or later<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2008\/early-2008-macbook-pro\/\">Early 2008 MacBook Pro<\/a> or later<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2009\/mac-mini-late-2009\/\">Late 2009 Mac mini<\/a> or later<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2008\/mac-pro-early-2008\/\">Early 2008 Mac Pro<\/a> or later<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2009\/xserve-nehalem-mid-2009\/\">2009 Xserve<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: If you have the <a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2009\/mac-pro-early-2009\/\">Early 2009 Mac Pro<\/a> and have installed the firmware update patch so it identifies itself as MacPro5,1, you can run the standard installer. You do not need the patch tool.<\/p>\n<p>You will need a USB drive 8 GB or larger and <a href=\"http:\/\/dosdude1.com\/sierrapatch.html\">Mistr\u2019s patch tool<\/a>, which is linked on his page. <em>WiFi does not function on these unsupported systems if they have the Broadcom BCM4321 WiFi module:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2008\/13-macbook-air-late-2008\/\">Late 2008<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2009\/13-macbook-air-mid-2009\/\">Mid 2009 MacBook Air<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2008\/early-2008-macbook-pro\/\">Early 2008<\/a> and Mid 2008 MacBook Pro<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2008\/imac-early-2008\/\">Early 2008 iMac<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2008\/mac-pro-early-2008\/\">Early 2008 Mac Pro<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>New Features<\/h3>\n<p>Siri comes to the Mac with macOS Sierra.<\/p>\n<p>macOS Sierra can automatically sync all files on your Desktop and in your Documents folder with other Macs running Sierra. You can also access these files in your iPhone or iPad using iCloud Drive.<\/p>\n<p>The new Universal Clipboard lets you copy on one device and paste on another \u2013 whether it\u2019s a Mac with Sierra or an iPhone or iPad with iOS 10.<\/p>\n<p>Tabs are almost everywhere in Sierra, and they work much as they do in your browser. Third party apps will also be able to use tabs.<\/p>\n<p>Apple Pay is now part of macOS, not just iOS.<\/p>\n<p>If you have an Apple Watch, Auto Unlock will authenticate you and log you in automatically when you approach your Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Optimized Storage can store infrequently used files in iCloud while keeping them immediately available <em>any time you are online<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Availability<\/h3>\n<p>Apple developers can download an early pre-release version of macOS Sierra today, and a beta version will be available to users in July.
