Although the <a title=\"CPUs: PowerPC 603 and 603e\" href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2014\/cpus-powerpc-603-and-603e\/\">PPC 603e CPU<\/a> was superior to the older <a title=\"CPUs: PowerPC 601\" href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2014\/cpus-powerpc-601\/\">601<\/a>, the computer architecture kept performance of this 100-120 MHz model comparable to an\u00a0<a title=\"Power Mac 7100\" href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/1994\/power-mac-7100\/\">80 MHz Power Mac 7100<\/a>.<span id=\"more-11486\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/performa-5300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11478\" src=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/performa-5300.jpg\" alt=\"Performa 5300\" width=\"224\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a>To save money, Apple based the motherboard on the\u00a0<a title=\"Quadra 605\" href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/1993\/quadra-605\/\">Quadra 605<\/a>\u00a0with its 25 MHz system bus and 32-bit memory bus, even though the 603e is a 64-bit chip. Apple also used an 8-bit IDE controller for the hard drive. This was the kind of thinking that had crippled the\u00a0<a title=\"Mac LC\" href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/1990\/mac-lc\/\">Mac LC<\/a>\u00a0with a 32-bit CPU on a 16-bit bus in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>In a step backward from the <a title=\"Power Mac 6300 (Performa 6360)\" href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/1996\/power-mac-6300-performa-6360\/\">Performa 6300CD<\/a>, which predated the 5260 despite what the model number would seem to indicate, the 5260\u2019s 14\u2033 monitor only supports 640 x 480 resolution, not the 832 x 624 of the earlier model with its 15\u2033 display.<\/p>\n<p>Because of its unusual architecture, installing a 25-pin SCSI terminator to the SCSI port (if you have no SCSI devices attached) will improve network stability.<\/p>\n<p>Open Transport 1.2, which ships with Mac OS 8, solves many network problems.<\/p>\n<p>If you are using a serial printer and no modem, connect the printer to the modem port to avoid network problems.<\/p>\n<p>A word of warning: The serial ports don\u2019t support hardware handshaking, which is required for all modems 9600 bps and faster. You should boot System 7.5.2 or later and use Drive Setup 1.0.3 or higher with these drives.<\/li>\n<li>Apple discontinued support and parts orders for this model on 15 October 2001 (22 October in Canada), except in California. You may be able to find dealers with parts inventory either locally or on our <a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/dealers\/service.shtml\">parts and service list<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Macs with IDE hard drive do not provide SCSI termination power, depending on external SCSI devices to provide it.
