It was written by Bill Atkinson, and its user interface was designed by Susan Kare. It continued as freeware through version 2.0. MacPaint images could be copied to the clipboard and pasted into <a title=\"MacWrite FAQ\" href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2014\/macwrite-faq\/\">MacWrite<\/a> documents.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2830\" style=\"width: 519px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/?attachment_id=2830#main\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2830\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2830\" title=\"macpaint\" alt=\"MacPaint image\" src=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/macpaint.png\" width=\"509\" height=\"355\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MacPaint image by Susan Kare.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unlike other Apple software for the Mac, MacPaint 1 only allows having a one open document, and the size and location of window cannot be changed. To zoom in for detail work, MacPaint used FatBits, which greatly magnified a portion of the image.<\/p>\n<p>MacPaint 2.0 was released by Apple&#8217;s Claris division in 1988. Users could now have up to nine open documents, each up to 8&#8243; x 10&#8243; It was discontinued early in 1988 due to low sales.<\/p>\n<p>MacPaint inspired a world of competing paint programs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20081211180631\/http:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/macaspect\/\">MacPaint X<\/a> is an unofficial port to <a title=\"Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger\" href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2005\/mac-os-x-10-4-tiger\/\">Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger<\/a> and <a title=\"Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard\" href=\"http:\/\/lowendmac.com\/2007\/mac-os-x-10-5-leopard\/\">10.5 Leopard<\/a> on either PowerPC or Intel Macs.
