I guess I should introduce myself if I'm going to be posting stories here. My name is Veduny Caprice. I'm 20 yrs old and I am a shifter and a witch with a specialization in tranfiguration. Not only can I transform my body but I can transform the objects around me, pretty neat huh? I joined this community to improve my writing skills. Most of my stories will be in first person point of view narrated by Me, or one of my flatmates. I am a horrible procrastinator so expect long bouts of writers block between posts from me, that is unless on of my flatmates nags me into writing more often.

Let's see what else? More about where I live for one. Mysteria is a Magic Island off the coast of the Florida Keys. Its the only completely magical Island in the world. There are no mundane, non-magic, people anywhere on the island. It's a pretty temperate place although there are the ocassional storms, mostly caused when my weather witch neighbor and the elemental down the road get into a row.

Like I said I live with two roomates, Miyuki and Doran. Doran actually used to be called Seth Wilde then he ticked off one of my relatives and now he's a white cat that lives with us. Miyuki can teleport and cast glamours. She's also a total anime manga fangirl. She's obsessed with anything that comes from Japan, it's scary really.

Really that's about all I can think to put for now, for more on me and my friends visit me at my journal.

My name's John Allerdyce. I'm a mutant - that means someone who's been gifted with the X-Gene, not to be confused with your normal, everyday, two-bit freak. I used to be a student at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, formerly known as Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. I left the school in early 2003 and joined up with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

You're probably thinking, "What's with the retarded names?" Well, I have no friggin' idea. But - it gets worse. Up in Westchester, New York, there's a bunch of leather clad superheroes who live in the X-Mansion who think they're God's gift to humanity. They call themselves the X-Men. They have important code names like Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Iceman, etc.

My code name's Pyro. I'm a professional criminal, a mutant terrorist. In my bad-ass team, we've got mutants like Magneto, Mystique, Toad and Sabretooth. We're into world domination and targeting anti-mutant political figures.

Do I have superpowers? Well, I'm a pyrokinetic. I have the psionic ability to manipulate flame by shaping it, increasing or decreasing its heat, intensity, and size. I'm invulnerable to any fire that I've placed under my mental control. The only downside to my powers is that I'm unable to generate fire on my own. But hey, all I need is a tiny spark and I'm good to go.

The reason why I had this LJ join the community as well is because I do want to post works involving characters other than Deona Miles. A few are conventional fanfiction, though. Can't exactly do that with DM.

Hey, now that I am back online on my own computer, this way I can make sure I keep writing, even with the fact that I am also playing Final Fantasy XI on the PC.

Library Cataloguing

Some of you may have wondered from time to time why there are five tags on each of your entries. I did write a very brief explanation back when we started the group, but I thought I'd give a more in depth run through of why I catalogue the way I do.

Some of my non-LJ friends commented to me once that the reason they don't like LJ is because fic gets lost in the piles and piles of entries that go into communities and personal LJs never to be accessed again without knowing things like date of posting. I have also been in LJ communities where I have posted fic and while the reading is good on day-of-post and a few days after, the story eventually gets lost in the archive of time. Who wants to wade through a very busy LJ archive to look for one fic?

So when I set this one up, I thought I'd do it in a way so that everything was easily accessible. I'm a library worker, I'm supposedly trained to organise information, so why not?

Hence the cataloguing.

Each entry is catalogued twice. Once by tagging with five tags, and also by assigning it to memories.

The five tags and the Catalogue
Each entry has five tags - fandom/universe, character/muse, author/journal, challenge and format. I tried to look at this from the reader's point of view. I honestly don't know if we have any readers, but if we do, they should be able to access any entry they want.

Readers often come by fandom. Joe Bloggs only wants to read Firefly fic. So he goes to the catalogue and pulls up all the Firefly fic.

But say he only likes fics with River as the focus? He can go back to the catalogue and access just those fics with the River Tam tag.

However, the libraryofwinds allows multiple versions of any character in any fandom. What if Joe only likes one of those versions? The River tag will bring up all the River entries regardless of who wrote them. If Joe then notes which journal the River he prefers belongs to, he can again go back to the catalogue and select that journal from the list of Author/Journals and read all the entries by that person to his heart's content. (eg. mals_albatross or aionmadness)

The challenge number tag allows both readers and writers to compare the various different interpretations of the challenges across fandoms.

The format tag simply denotes whether the entry is 'fic' (written from a personal journal) or 'muse (written from a muse journal) or if it contains icon art. Muse introductions also come under this tag....hmm, come to thing of it I should move 'introduction' to the challenge list - it belongs there by definition (sorry, thinking out loud).

A quick note on Original work tags - we have quite a few original fic writers in our community and from the very beginning I saw a problem with cataloguing these fics. I could simply slap them all into one big heading of 'Original'. But what if a reader liked a particular character or universe? I found it necessary to divide 'original' into universes as advised by the authors themselves (eg. original - two planets) to enable readers to have all the fic from one universe easily accessible and to allow multiple characters from the one universe to be kept together. Basically it brings all the original fics in line with the fandom fics for ease of access.

All the tags can be accessed by the Catalogue page.

Memories (accessed via the 'Answers' link in the Links List towards the top of the community)
I have never been entralled by the memories feature of LJ, it can be clunky at times and also very time consuming cataloging-wise, so I almost didn't use it since tags were so versatile. However, I did end up archiving each fic by challenge and fandom, and you might ask why did I bother? It duplicates the tags.

Two reasons.

Memories gives the reader who is more familiar with that system the chance to access fic by fandom, then title and author, in one big list.

And also I get easy statistics on how many responses were made to each of the challenges, so when I go to post the next challenge, I know what types of words I've used before and which ones proved popular.

In summary, the community is basically an archive, a library of fic within Live Journal, where you should be able to access any entry you ever made, and so should everyone else.

The mechanics of cataloguing
I check every entry that gets posted. Members are welcome to tag their own entries with the tags provided and save me some time :D New members and new challenge tags can't be used until I put the tag in the list. I will still check those tags applied and alter if necessary.

Once tagged, I will assign the post to memories using the fic title and the author for the entry heading. If the fic has no title, it will default to the challenge word. I use the format date: 'Title of Fic' by Author (and if author is a muse, 'muse' is in brackets after the author).

If there is a post by a new member, I will also update the catalogue page to reflect that. The catalogue page only contains references to members who have posted to the community.

And that is pretty much it :D Any questions/concerns? (Other than the ones involving my sanity :D)

Original fic/character peoples

If any of you have a working title for the universe your original characters exist in, and would like them catalogued under that name, let me know.

For example, I have two characters, Chanu Far and James McIntyre, who are both part of my 'Two Planets' universe. They have their own tag, place in memories and catalogue listing under 'original - two planets'. This enables me to keep them together and allows for me to add more characters or general fic to the universe (which I will most certainly be doing in the future).

So if any of you would like something similar....'original - your universe name here', please let me know. The sooner you let me know, the better, because then there are less entries I have to back catalogue. :D

The Library of the Four Winds has a new department.

The Shelves - to_the_shelves - is an original works writing and discussion community.

This community is designed to aid and support writers of original fiction. To gather aspiring authors together to discuss problems, ask questions, and basically help motivate the writing process. A place to post work for others to see. If it involves original work, you'll find it here.

Once a week a writing exercise/activity/challenge/discussion topic will be issued. Participation is not mandatory, but encouraged.

Other topics on writing you might find here are:

- Techniques of writing, editing, character and plot development - basically anything to do with the writing process.
- Details of writing competitions and other aspects of the writer's marketplace.
- Recommendations for reading, links to useful writing websites and other clubs
- Anything else of use anyone can think of.

It should be noted that all posts will be locked to the community for copyright and privacy's sake. Some authors would like to publish the works they are discussing and this precludes open viewing. Membership requires moderation, but once approved a member can post as often as they like.

This means to participate you will need to join and friend the community, otherwise you won't be able to see anything.

Normally wouldn't do an intro or anything, but I do have a question, so I may as well kill two birds with one stone.

So Hallo. I'm Snowy, and have been doing strange bits of writing for way too long. Have been an LJ fanatic for over a year, and write deadgirlreaping in TM. Ex TM pups are lagerncurry and racheldoes. Both are on hiatus for the moment, but are not forgotten. ~~I really should get off my bum and join them up here.~~ I also have another pup who occasionally posts to the Library.

I have a claim to fame I'm proud of, in that I was the first poster to the comm in answer to challenges. :-D [/end smug git mode.]

Reading the other day a couple of things in the work room, I saw a post about RP, and a couple of examples on godmodding. I dabble in RP, and often find after reading threads that I've been guilty of pups moving things about when shouldn't, or making the big mistake of assuming. Thankfully I've been lucky to play with muns who are very forgiving in my RP naivety. :-D

Short of having someone vet any RP... what is acceptable moving of chars, and what isn't? Myself, I find that not influencing others is sometimes impossible, if there is a specific reason for doing so. And of course, there are the times it's happened by accident, because I'm not paying attention.

Having a muse grab and move a muse isn't the done thing of course, I know that, but there are instances where the moving is so slight I wonder where the line is drawn at. For instance: a muse says "Stay there" to another, is that classed as GM as well? Or what about items and things that could be in a setting if an environment is painted - are those free game for muses? Or, ok, thinking of an example I've done myself - one muse pushes an item into the fingertips of another muse. Is that a slap muns fingers moment? I'm particularly interested in how muses fight or touch, that type of thing. I've seen RP where muses make actions as if they are doing Tai Chi:

::Muse 1:: moves hands in direction of others head

::Muse 2:: is hit and then kicks into the air

::Muse 1:: kneecap was in the way of the kick

So I can understand that, but it doesn't fit well into the style of narrative RP that I've seen and become used to. The narrative style itself I think makes things much harder.

If anyone would like to clarify and give more examples, I'd love to hear them. The subject interests me, and I'd like to learn more about the do's and dont's of RP. :-D

I guess I better put my two cents in :D

I'm gumnut, sometimes known as windcharmer. Yes, we are one and the same, both library workers and both Nutty. I'm the maintainer of this little corner of the web and it is fantastic to see you all here.

My two main pups are allknightlong, a cracked up version of Michael Knight, and his not quite partner, Knight, notwhatiam. They are both originally from the fandom of 'Knight Rider', but both characters, especially Knight, who is a 250 year old version of Kitt, are far from canon.

I also have a bunch of other characters, both original and fandom-based, floating around the place. They make appearances from time to time, but I'll let you guess which ones they are :D And I do write straight fic from time to time.

It should be noted that I'm based in Australia. So if you think the Library has changed overnight, you're probably right. I'm usually doing things to it when most of you are asleep :D

I've been writing and roleplaying for a while now. LJ roleplay does tend to be addictive!
The vocabulary can confuse newcomers, so here are some definitions if anyone wonders:

IC: "in character." When one is speaking as a fictional character, they're said to be acting IC. OOC, Out of Character, is when a roleplayer is speaking as themselves rather than a muse.

GM, DM: the 'game moderator' or gamemaster, person who may have founded and
directs a roleplaying community. Usually they set up the general rules, approve members' applications in some instances, and initiate central plots or storylines, though other players may also start in-game plots.

RP communities can vary in how structured they are, and in membership. Some comms are set in a specific fandom. Example: you might see a game that is set in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or "Alias", which only takes characters from the fandom in question. Others allow anyone to join, muns or muse journals, and from any fandom whatsoever.

Canon: the source material/information of a fandom as written by its creators. The televised episodes of a show or the published issues of a comic
are canon for that show or book. Players may stick to canon events and details in roleplaying, but they also often add their own interpretation or changes to the characters they play.

AU: alternate universe. An RP plot in which a player significantly alters the character's canon history, traits, or personality. A "what if" style of game, to explore the "road not taken".

IG: in-game. Similar to IC. This means events that are set in IC narrative,
see also "meta".

Meta or metaplot: a rp'ed storyline that may vary from a second, "official" storyline that's already in progress. Example: Character A and B are rping in the same group. In-game, they are rivals. If the players of A and B want to do so, they can have their characters interact in a short term RP that is agreed to happen outside of the primary storyline, and not have any effect on the primary SL's outcome.

ST: Storyteller

SL: storyline

Metagaming: this is a no-no. It refers to a practice of having one's characters know things for which there's no logical explanation as to how they could know, such as having a(nonpsychic) character "just know" what another player's character is thinking or planning IC, or an instance where the character knows what the player knows, OOC.

Godmodding: when you RP, you only control your character's actions and reactions. Godmodding, to write for someone else's character actions in an RP without the other player's consent, is another Thou Shalt Not in RP.
Example: (good RP)

A: *walks into the room and sees that B is there, suggests that they go outside*
B: *smiles at A, agrees and accompanies her outdoors when she goes*
Example(Godmodding):
A: *comes into the room, sees that B is there, and drags him outside with her*
Example:(Godmodding):
A: *comes into the room, suggests that she and B go outside, and when he agrees, walks out ahead of him.*
(I know the second example is a bit less clear. But if B's player doesn't post that his character said anything, it's still not acceptable for A&player to decide that that's what they're going to do.)

If you feel comfortable enough with another player to allow them to write for your character at times, that's between you and the other player. But it's polite to ask, not assume.

NPC: non player character. A character mentioned in a muse's posts who isn't being played as a separate muse or journal. If I play Buffy Summers, and there's no one playing Willow or Giles in my RP community, I may mention their characters in a post I write. That's not considered godmodding as there's no other player affected at the time.

Hey there, this is reoune. I'm known around the internet as a free-lance writer with a basis in online fanfiction. I actually got started in RP on LJ in late summer in a private group involved with Knight Rider. After there was a falling out in December, just after Christmas (I'm not going to elaborate), I got involved in mainstream LJ RPing.

I only have 2 RP characters. The first one got her starts in the private group. After the falling out, the character I was using in the group was killed, then untethered. A lot of ya know her story, and a lot know what's happened since her untethering.

Deona and her husband, Devon, live in the Boardwalk Nexus (theboardwalk), and one of her major haunts is The Lunatic Cafe (lunatic_cafe). Due to her nature, it's very possible to find this young woman in a lot of places in the big ol' multiverse.

I think I'm gonna enjoy this OOC community being there. And Nutty's right, RP should come with an addiction warning!

My boys and one lonely little girl are open to role playing across the board. I play House and Wilson, Azi and Crowley, but I don't play them together. I'm more than happy (believe me) to play with other people's versions of the same pups I play.

I can generally be found on AIM: InzaneRHB. Most of my characters have their own screen names, but I rarely sign on more than one or two at a time. InzaeRHB is the best bet. And please, don't b shy! I looooove to meet new people and chat or play or most anything.

And, let me throw up kudos to the mod of this lovely corner of LJ. I was thrilled to find it, and I'm not even sure now how I got here, but I'm here and I'm going to light a fire under my pups as early as next week to get them to write something.
