What is neurotypical? – by Musings of an Aspie. A humorous, tongue-in-cheek description of NT’s using similar language that NT’s use to describe autistic people.
“The London Eye Mystery”
The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd. One of the two main characters has a “brain wired a little differently”, and is depicted very positively (he solves the mystery!). Ages 8+.
Paying attention
Paying Attention while Autistic, by Autistic Academic. Great description of the multiple sensory inputs in a busy environment that makes focusing on one particular task very difficult for autistic people.
Not “really” autistic
If you can’t… by Chavisory. Responses to the comment “I don’t think of you as really autistic”. I particularly liked the description of autism as a galaxy rather than a spectrum (not a simple linear progression from mild to severe, and also changes through time for each person).
Autism NOT Development Delay
Autism <> Development Delay, by Ariane Zurcher. Very interesting article with comments from her daughter Emma (who states, “Autism is not a developmental delay, rather it is a different road entirely”), as well as several autistic adults.
Have you filled a bucket today?
Have you filled a bucket today? A guide for daily happiness for Kids – by Carol McCloud. “Bucket fillers” fill others’ buckets with kindness (which also helps to fill their own), whereas bullies are “bucket dippers” – but they can’t fill their own buckets by dipping from others’. Lovely illustrations and some good suggestions for how to be a bucket filler.
Gender and Autism
At the intersection of gender and autism – by Cynthia Kim of Musings of an Aspie. After adult diagnosis of Aspergers, she had to learn how to dress femininely while accommodating her sensory needs. She also writes about the social expectations of women being nurturing and relational, and the consequent self-doubt she experienced as an undiagnosed autistic woman.
