    Can a Saved Man Choose to be Lost?

    The power of choice is a wonderful gift from God. Yet there is one choice God never allowed man to exercise. No one can choose whether or not to be born with a sinful nature. The decision which affects our lives the most was made long, long ago by our forefathers. We have absolutely no choice about the kind of nature we possess at birth. It is a sinful nature. If unchanged it will lead to eternal death. But even though we are born with a fallen nature, God gives us a choice about changing that nature. It is a personal, sovereign choice that no one can take away from us. Without doubt it constitutes the most important decision that any person faces during his lifetime. The choice is whether we yield to that sinful nature and die eternally, or receive a new nature through faith in Christ and live eternally. Much disagreement exists over the kind of choice offered to each one of us. Millions believe that God opens the door for only a once-in-a-lifetime decision and then closes that door forever. It is as though God says, โ€œIโ€™m going to give you only one decisionabout changing over from your doomed condition. Once you decide to be saved you can never choose to be lost again. When you accept Jesus as your Saviour, it will be the final choice you will ever make about your eternal destiny. If you change your mind later and repudiate your decision, it will be too late. No matter how deeply and sincerely you desire to be lost and repent of your repentance, you cannot escape from eternal life. No amount of bitter rebellion, deliberate blasphemy, or iniquitous living can change that once-for-all decision to be saved. I will not allow you any further choice after you accept Jesus as your Saviour.โ€ Basically, this is the belief of a large segment of Christians who advocate the doctrine of eternal security. Another equally sincere group of Christians believes that God leaves the door open for us to change our minds at any time. They believe that salvation is not predicated upon only one irrevocable act or choice of the past, but upon a continuous, personal relationship of the believer with Christ. When the decision to break the love-relationship is made by willful disobedience, the believer ceases to be a true believer and forfeits any assurance of salvation.

    Millions of Souls at Stake

    The fantastic implications of this issue are overwhelming. If there is an unconditional future security for all believers, it has to be the most wonderful doctrine in existence: but if it is not true, it surely is one of the most dangerous heresies in the world. Millions could be saved or lost over the decision they make on this one point. Let me give you an example of how it influences the destiny of people day by day. At one of my crusades there were more than one hundred people attending who had been steeped in the belief of eternal security. They were thrilled by the revelation of Bible truth as they listened. The seventh-day Sabbath particularly excited them because they had never before understood it. All were completely convinced that Saturday is the true Sabbath of the Scriptures, and they eagerly accepted the great prophetic doctrines also. But of those hundred people only a very few made any decision to obey the truth. Practically all of them had Sabbath problems connected with their jobs. It would have meant inconvenience, economic hardship, and possible loss of employment for them to follow the truth all the way. Each one who rejected the message gave me the same explanation โ€“ โ€œWe are already saved,โ€ they said, โ€œand we cannot be lost. Why should we run the risk of losing our jobs by keeping the Sabbath? We would not be any more saved by keeping the Sabbath than we are right now, and we certainly cannot be lost by breaking the Sabbath.โ€ Do you see how their argument was consistent with their doctrine? To them salvation was not connected with obedience, or advancing in spiritual growth. It all focused on a past moment when they made a decision for Christ. Whether they obeyed or disobeyed any subse- quent revelation of truth could have no influence whatsoever on their final destiny. They could break the fourth commandment, the seventh commandment, or all of them, and still feel eternally secure in the promise they had claimed โ€œwhen they were saved.โ€ To be sure, these people believed that their disobedience might affect the joy and peace of their relationship, but never the assurance of ultimate salvation. Obviously, this doctrine needs to be deeply examined. Too many eternal consequences hinge upon its acceptance or rejection. We need to answer questions like these: Can we change our minds about being saved? Do we give up our power of choice when we are converted? Does salvation consist of one grand, holy moment of decision, or must we continue in the saving grace of Christ after that decision? Can God take defiling sins into His holy kingdom? Fortunately, the Bible has hundreds of beautiful, clear texts to answer these questions. We will look at them together, and also examine a few texts which have been interpreted to uphold the doctrine of โ€œonce saved, always saved.โ€

    No Sin in Heaven

    Speaking of the New Jerusalem, John said, โ€œThere shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth.โ€ Revelation 21:27. Jesus said, โ€œBlessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.โ€ Matthew 5:8. Paul repeatedly wrote about the exclusion of sinners from heaven. Sin is the only thing that defiles in the sight of God, and no one who willfully practices sin will ever enter into His kingdom. Paul wrote, โ€œKnow ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, . . . nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards . . . shall inherit the kingdom of God.โ€ 1 Corinthians 6:9, 10. Nowhere in the Bible is entrance into Godโ€™s kingdom tied to a momentary โ€“ or even temporary โ€“ faith experience of the past. Salvation is a dynamic, growing relationship with the only One who has eternal life to bestow. It requires continuing contact in order to receive it. The very life of God can be shared with men but NEVER APART FROM A LIVING UNION WITH CHRIST! โ€œHe that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.โ€ 1 John 5:12. Just as the constant creative energy of God is necessary to sustain the universe and to hold atoms together, so His divine power is constantly needed to maintain spiritual life in the soul. When a person willfully chooses to separate from God, the contact is broken, and the spiritual life ceases to flow. God will not violate the will of anyone in making that choice either. For proof that Christians can lose their connection with Jesus and be lost, read John 15:1-6. There Christ explains one of the great mysteries of eternal life. โ€œI am the vine, yeare the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.โ€ Verses 5, 6.

    The Secret of Continued Life is Continued Abiding

    Notice that the secret of continued life is continued abiding. If a person does not abide in Christ, he withers, dies, and is finally burned up. This proves that the relation of a believer to Christ is never a static thing based only on a past experience. It is a current, mutual sharing of a common life which is drawn from Him โ€œwho is our lifeโ€ (Colossians 3:4). When the branch is separated from the vine, the source of life is gone, and only death can result. These words of Jesus are too clear to be misconstrued. Even believing, trusting Christians who areconnected to the living vine may choose to separate from the vine. When they do, they die and will be cast into the fire and burned. Nothing can wither and die that has not previously been alive. Security is eternal only for those whose faith is eternally fixed on Jesus, and whose life is connected to the one who is our life. Obviously, we can choose to be lost no matter how saved we once were. Everything depends on maintaining the divine connection with the true vine. Jesus taught the same solemn truth about losing eternal life in the parable of the sower. In explaining the seed which fell among the thorns and the rocks, Jesus said, โ€œThose by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.โ€ Luke 8:12, 13. There are several things to note about this parable. First, only one class will finally be saved โ€“ the ones who brought forth much fruit. The groups represented by the wayside and rocks will not be saved. In verse 12, the wayside hearers did not have a chance to โ€œbelieve and be saved,โ€ but in the next verse the stony ground hearers do โ€œfor a while believe.โ€ What kind of โ€œbelievingโ€ is this? According to verse 12, it is the kind that saves. So the ones who believed for a while were saved for a while, but in time of temptation they fell away. Eventually, of course, they were lost along with all the others, except the fruit-bearers. Here is an unequivocal teaching of our Lord that people can have a saving faith for a while, and yet lose it and be lost.

    Security is Eternal Only for Those Whose Faith is Eternally Fixed on Jesus

    Those who read the record of the Gospels carefully will find repeated authority from Jesus to renounce the doctrine of eternal security. In Luke 12:42-46 Christ described in another parable how a faithful servant could turn into an unfaithful one. After asking, โ€œWho then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household . . . ?โ€ Jesus answers His own question: โ€œThat servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing . . . he will make him ruler over all that he hath.โ€ Then Christ explains how that servant could lose his reward. โ€œBut and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.โ€ Verses 45,46. Here is a perfect example by the Master Teacher as to how a faithful and wise servant can be punished with the unbelievers. Jesus was talking about a man whom He had seen faithful enough to trust with heavy responsibilities. Undoubtedly, this servant represents those who carefully served the Lord as true believers. But what happened? That very faithful servant departed from the path of faithfulness and reaped eternal ruin and death. Does this not also remind us of the words of Hebrews 10:38, โ€œNow the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.โ€ The servant in the parable, who was a believer, is now punished with the unbelievers. The faithful can draw back to perdition.

    Salvation Can Be Forfeited

    One more parable of Christ spotlights the fact that continued forgiveness is conditional for the believer. The story is found in Matthew 18:21-35, and revolves around the forgiveness of God. A certain king responded to the pleas of his servant and forgave him a large debt. That servant went out and found a fellow servant who owed him a small amount and showed no mercy, throwing him in prison because he could not pay. When the king heard what had happened, he rescinded his cancellation of the large debt and had his servant thrown to the tormentors till he paid in full. No one can deny the obvious teaching of this parable. Even though God graciously forgives those who apply for it, that forgiveness is not without conditions for the future. We can lose that forgiveness by being unmerciful to others. This is in harmony with the words of the Lord in Ezekiel 33:13, โ€œWhen I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.โ€ The principle is repeated in verse 18, โ€œWhen the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.โ€ The secret lies in maintaining the righteous relationship with the Source of salvation. Jesus said, โ€œHe that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.โ€ Matthew 24:13. No one will be saved finally who does not hold out against a course of deliberate sin in the power of God. Those who do not endure to the end will have their names blotted out of the book of life. Advocates of eternal security deny it could ever happen, but read the frightening possibility for yourself in Revelation 3:5, โ€œHe that overcometh . . . I will not blot out his name out of the book of life.โ€ The implication is clear that those who are not overcomers โ€“ who do not endure to the end โ€“ will have their names blotted out. All these verses are really saying the same thing. Willful sin shatters the relationship by which eternal life is obtained. There is an eternal โ€œifโ€ in every consideration of eternal security. โ€œIf we walk in the light . . . the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.โ€ 1 John 1:7. โ€œIf that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.โ€ 1 John 2:24. โ€œIf any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.โ€ Hebrews 10:38. โ€œIf a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch.โ€ John 15:6. โ€œIf a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.โ€ John 8:51. โ€œIf thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.โ€ Romans 11:22. โ€œIf ye do these things, ye shall never fall.โ€ 2 Peter 1:10. โ€œFor we are made partakers of Christ, If we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.โ€ Hebrews 3:14. โ€œIf we endure, we shall also reign with him: If we deny him, he also will deny us.โ€ 2 Timothy 2:12 (RSV). โ€œIf we sin willfully . . . there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins.โ€ Hebrews 10:26. โ€œIf any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.โ€ 1 John 2:15. โ€œYe are my friends, If ye do whatsoever I command you.โ€ John 15:14. โ€œIf ye live after the flesh, ye shall die.โ€ Romans 8:13.

    Danger of Being a Castaway

    Paul recognized the fearful possibility of being cast out of Godโ€™s presence in the end unless he curbed the fleshly propensities to sin. Said he, โ€œ. . . lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.โ€ 1 Corinthians 9:27. The word Paul used โ€“ castaway โ€“ is very interesting. It is the Greek word โ€œadokimos,โ€ which is translated โ€œreprobateโ€ in other places. In fact, 2 Corinthians 13:5 declares that Jesus Christ cannot dwell in the heart that is reprobate (adokimos). Titus 1:16 speaks of the abominable and disobedient who are โ€œunto every good work reprobate (adokimos).โ€ Surely Paul had nothing else in mind but that he could be lost if he allowed sin to recapture his life. Paul also speaks of the possibility of born-again believers suffering damnation because they receive the Lordโ€™s Supper unworthily. โ€œFor he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself.โ€ 1 Corinthians 11:29. No one can deny that these people were committed Christians partaking of the symbols of their redemption. Could they fall into damnation and be lost? Paul said they could. What is damnation? The same Greek word (krima) is found in 1 Timothy 5:12. โ€œHaving damnation (krima) because they have cast off their first faith.โ€ How plain it is that believers can โ€œcast off their first faithโ€ and go into final damnation. I have listened many, many times to an explanation of eternal security based upon the analogy of sonship. โ€œMy child is born into my family and he will always be my child. He cannot be unborn. Whether obedient or disobedient, he will always be my child.โ€ This reasoning avoids the central issue. The question is not whether a child can be โ€œunborn,โ€ but whether it can sicken and die. No doctor admonishes new parents about the dangers of the baby getting unborn, but he has much to say about proper care to keep it from dying. In fact, if the baby is not fed, it will soon die. In the same way, Jesus said, โ€œExcept ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.โ€ John 6:53. What was He talking about? In verse 63 He explained, โ€œThe words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.โ€ Unless the Christian lives by the Word of God, he cannot continue to partake of the spiritual life derived from Him. Have we clearly established that continued obedience is necessary to ultimate salvation? Paul wrote, โ€œKnow ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey?โ€ Romans 6:16. When a man chooses to obey Christ no longer and obeys the devil instead, he no longer belongs to Christ, but to Satan. โ€œHe that doeth righteousness is righteous . . . He that committeth sin is of the devil.โ€ 1 John 3:7, 8. The writer of the book of Hebrews gives scores of specific admonitions against falling away from the faith. Hebrews 10:23 opens up a line of argument against the once-saved, always-saved position that no one can refute. The passage begins this way: โ€œLet us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering.โ€ And after that, admonition is given those who might be tempted to absent themselves from the assembly of the believers. Apparently, this is one of the first signs of slipping backward. The author of this epistle, and I think it was Paul, includes himself in the warning. He writes, โ€œFor if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Mosesโ€™ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?โ€ That is from verses 26 through 29. The people described herehad been sanctified by the truth, but fell away into willful apostasy. Now the last few verses of the chapter warn against the casting away of their confidence. Notice this carefully! โ€œCast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. . . . Now the just shall live by faith; but if any man draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.โ€ Verses 35 to 39. Now how could anybody state any more clearly the fact that oneโ€™s eternal salvation is conditional on his remaining steadfast to the very end? Unless there were a possibility that one might cast away his confidence, that he might draw back unto perdition, why would this man of God sound such a warning as he did? In Hebrews 6:4-6 we find another striking statement. โ€œFor it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.โ€ Now I think it would be very difficult to describe more fully a person who had been born again but who later rebelled against God and rejected Christ and spurned the Holy Spirit. He has placed himself out of Godโ€™s reach by his own actions. Therefore, there is no possibility that such a man can be saved as long as he continues to crucify Christ by his disobedience.

    Branches Can Be Cut Off

    In the eleventh chapter of Romans, Paul is discussing the fact that many of the physical seed of Israel rejected Godโ€™s Son and were thus cut off. The illustration is used of an olive tree. The branches were the children of Israel, but because of their unbelief, they were broken off, as you will read in verses 17 to 20. Then, some wild olive branches were grafted in, which represents the Gentile Christians. Now note this admonition: โ€œFor if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, IF THOU CONTINUE IN HIS GOODNESS: OTHERWISE, THOU ALSO SHALT BE CUT OFF.โ€ Verses 21 and 22, emphasis added. Please note that any security for those branches depended entirely upon their connection with the tree. The security was conditional. Letโ€™s see whether Peter agrees with these sentiments of Paul. In his second epistle, the first chapter, are listed a number of virtues which should be manifested in the life of every Christian. These are mentioned in verses 5 to 7, and notice that he is writing to โ€œthem that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.โ€ Verse 1. Then they had been given โ€œall things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.โ€ Verse 3. It is very apparent that Peter is addressing these remarks to those who have been converted. But notice the warning he gives: โ€œBut he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall.โ€ Verses 9 and 10. Surely this indicates that Christians can fall from grace. They can turn back from following Jesus. They can even become apostates in the truest sense of the word. In the third chapter, Peter goes on to say, โ€œWherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.โ€ Verse 14. โ€œSeeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.โ€ Verse 17. So we see that Peter does agree with Paul that Christians need to be on guard constantly lest they be led astray, and he indicates the sad fate of those who turn back into sin after they are converted. One of the strongest texts in the Bible that proves a person can turn away from Christ and be lost even after he has made a profession of being saved is 2 Peter 2:20-22: โ€œIf after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.โ€ The lesson here is obvious. Now, those who take a position for unconditional security say that Godโ€™s sons cannot be represented by dogs and sows. Well, maybe they canโ€™t, but Peter did โ€“ and it is the most apt of illustrations. The proverb is painfully plain. They had escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. They had been converted. They had joined Christ on His side. They had turned their lives over to Him, but they remembered the world and the โ€œwallowโ€ of sin. Like the Israelites coming out of Egypt, they remembered the โ€œflesh pots,โ€ the โ€œleeks and onions.โ€ They remembered the pleasures of sin; so, leaving Christ they went back into the world like the hog returns to its wallow in the mire. Certainly no Christian should imitate the habits of a hog, but Peterโ€™s proverb shows that it is possible. The Spirit of God is not silent on this point. Listen: โ€œNow the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times SOME SHALL DEPART FROM THE FAITH, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.โ€ 1 Timothy 4:1, emphasis added. When will this happen? When will some depart from the faith? In the latter times. That would be right now, wouldnโ€™t it? That would be the times in which we are living and the times immediately before us. If you havenโ€™t thought of it before, these are dangerous times. And if you are still unconvinced, thoughtfully read the headlines of tomorrowโ€™s newspaper. On this point โ€œthe Spirit speaketh expressly.โ€ Just what does that mean? It means the Spirit speaks plainly, clearly โ€“ so clearly it is impossible to misunderstand. All right then, what would some do? Some would depart from the faith. So, it is possible to leave the faith, isnโ€™t it? Some do it. They have been in the faith, they have worshiped with the brethren, they have attended church and prayer meeting. They have been actively promoting the gospel, they have given of their means, they have been pastors, officers of the church, and leading laymen; nevertheless, they leave the faith. They are not steadfast and faithful. In the last days come perilous times, with persecutions and serious difficulties, and some do not stand. They are tempted by the things of the world and are seduced by spirits of devils. Sad to say, they give up their allegiance to the Man of the cross. They were on Christโ€™s side, but now they side with His enemy. Please donโ€™t missunderstand. If you want unconditional security, you can have it. It is in Christ, on a day-by-day, moment-by-moment basis. When you take Christ and stay by, you will persevere. There is, and can be, no failure on Christโ€™s part. He will not fail; He is faithful. โ€œCast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee.โ€ Psalm 55:22. He will stand by you as long as you stand by Him. Jesus said of Himself, โ€œI am the way, the truth, and the life.โ€ John 14:6. And John wrote of the Lord, โ€œThis is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.โ€ 1 John 5:11, 12. Many non-Christians think they have security. They will tell you they believe God will admit them to heaven. They will say, โ€œI am as good as people in the church,โ€ or โ€œI feel I will be saved without going to church.โ€ But the truth is, no man is saved on the basis of his feelings. He may be sincere, but his sincerity will not save him. He may be honest, truthful, moral, and a first class citizen, but that wonโ€™t save him. He may be liberal, a supporter of the church and a giver to the needy, but neither will that save him. No man is saved by his works, good as they may be. Remember this, and please never forget it: Christ is the Saviour, not your gifts, not your works. He offers you salvation as a free gift. It is in Christ, and when you receive Christ, you have salvation. โ€œHe that hath the Son, hath life.โ€ 1 John 5:12. But if you donโ€™t have the Son, you donโ€™t have life, and you cannot have eternal security until you have and keep Christ the Son.

    What Does It Mean for the Christian to Leave His โ€œFirst Loveโ€?

    โ€œNevertheless, I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy FIRST LOVE. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.โ€ Revelation 2:4, 5, emphasis added. For the Christian to leave his first love, is to backslide, to fall away, to leave the Lord and His service, and to go over to the service of sin, Satan and the world. The Lord calls upon all such to repent and do their first works (the fruits of love), or else โ€“ else what? โ€œI will take thy candlestick out of his place.โ€ This is an ultimatum from the Lord. If the sinner responds, repents, returns to his first love, and does his first works, all is well and good โ€“ he will be saved. But it is his to choose. If he does not do this, his light is removed, goes out, and the backslider is lost.

    Does the Backslider Always Return to the Lord Before Death?

    No, far from it. That was the case of the first king of Israel, Saul. It is written of Saul that he was โ€œturned into another man.โ€ โ€œAnd the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be TURNED INTO ANOTHER MAN.โ€ 1 Samuel 10:6 emphasis added. Yet Saul backslid from his high and exalted position, disobeyed the Lord, and at last took his own life (1 Samuel 31:1-6). It cannot be said in this case that Saul was not converted, because God says that he was. Yet, he took his own life with no opportunity of repentance.

    No Man Can Pluck Out

    Finally, let us look at the text which has probably been quoted more than any other to support the doctrine of eternal security. Jesus said, โ€œI give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Fatherโ€™s hand.โ€ John 10:28, 29. What a tremendous promise this should be for every trusting child of God! At first glance, it does seem to guarantee some sort of immunity against spiritual loss, but we have not read the entire text. Verse 27 is an integral part of the thought, and it lays down a specific condition for the fulfillment of the promise in verses 28 and 29. โ€œMy sheep hear my voice and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life.โ€ Please notice that it is only Godโ€™s true followers who nestle safely in His protecting hand. He gives eternal life only to the faithful sheep who hear and follow Him. It is this hearing and following which provides immunity against being plucked away by the devil or his agents. The protection is from enemies without who seek to carry off the sheep, but not from unfaithfulness of the sheep who might choose not to follow any longer. No one can pluck them out of the Fatherโ€™s hand, but they may choose to jump out at any time. God never even hints that He will interfere with the freedom of choice of His followers. Christians can choose to be lost just as surely as sinners can choose to be saved. Just think how useless would be all the hundreds of biblical warnings against apostasy if it were impossible to experience it. Why would the Spirit have led Paul, Peter, and all the others to pen such solemn threats and admonitions against eternal loss if they were in no danger of suffering it? And if it is true that the โ€œonce savedโ€ are eternally secure, surely the devil would know it. Therefore, he would never waste any time on believers, knowing how impossible it would be to cause them to be lost. Yet, we all know by experience that Satan works even harder to pull away the saints from following Christ. We have to conclude that salvation does not consist of a single, irrevocable commitment, whether past or present. Being saved is the experience of living Christโ€™s own life by divine imputation and impartation. It is never a reality except in continual, dynamic relationship with Jesus, the source of eternal life. Being saved must be spoken of in all three tenses of time in order to be completely biblical. It has happened, it is happening, and it will happen. Perhaps, this illustration by Glenn Fillman will help explain it.

    Saved โ€“ Past, Present and Future

    Bill Jones is fishing several miles out in the ocean. His boat capsizes and sinks to the bottom. He is unable to swim to safety. Just then, another fishing boat comes along, but it is so heavily loaded that it is impossible to take on another passenger. Because they want to rescue the doomed man, however, the crew throws him a rope. โ€œHere, take this rope,โ€ they say. โ€œWe will tow you to shore.โ€ As he takes the rope, Bill Jones says, โ€œThank God, I am saved!โ€ And he is saved, as long as he holds on to the rope. Salvation is his, but he has a part to play in it. If he should at any time release his grasp on the rope and refuse to take it again, he would be lost. So it is with a person who has been rescued from sin. He remains saved as long as he holds on to the hand of Christ. If he should decide to release that hand and clasp the hand of the devil, he would be lost. His salvation depends on his decision and his action. Actually, one can properly speak of salvation in three tenses โ€“ past, present, and future. He can say, โ€œI have been savedโ€ when he takes the rope, โ€œI am being savedโ€ as he is being towed to shore; and โ€œI shall be savedโ€ when he plants his feet firmly on shore. A converted person -has been saved- from the penalty of sin. We call that justification. He -is being saved- from the power of sin, and we call that sanctification. He -shall be saved- from the presence of sin when Christ comes, and that will be glorification. All three of these tenses are used in the Bible in connection with being saved. In Romans 8:24 is the expression, โ€œWe are saved by hope.โ€ Weymouth is a more accurate translation. He says, โ€œWe have been saved,โ€ past tense. The Revised Standard Version correctly renders the phrase in 1 Corinthians 1:18 as โ€œTo us who are being saved.โ€ Then Acts 15:11 states, โ€œthat through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved.โ€ So you see past, present, and future. Now letโ€™s make sure that no one gets the wrong impression from our illustration of the man being rescued from drowning. Does the fact that he must cling to the rope to be saved, mean that we can earn our salvation by our own works? Absolutely not, a thousand times no! Remember that he was being towed by a power other than his own. He was merely cooperating with that power. He was holding on to the rope. He had to do that in order to be pulled to safety. As Christians we must confess our faith in Christ, we must remain steadfast to Him, we must bring forth the fruits of obedience; that is our part in holding on to Christ. He will never let us go. The only way we can separate ourselves from Him is to cut ourselves off deliberately and disconnect ourselves from Him, but we have the power to do that. We are still free moral agents. Our will has not been removed merely because we have become Christians. At any point in our Christian life we can decide to turn back, to choose the things of the world rather than the things of God and heaven. We are saved only through faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour. โ€œThere is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.โ€ Acts 4:12. However, we show our faith by our works. It is a manifestation of our love for Him. Keeping Godโ€™s commandments and doing right are merely the result of His Holy Spirit dwelling in the heart. These are the fruits of the Spirit. We do these things, not in order to be saved, but because we are saved, and as long as we love the Lord with all our heart, we are going to be obedient to Him. We will not let go of the rope. We will continue to cling to Christ as our only hope.
    A NUGGET OF TRUTH. READING. Can a Saved Man Choose to be Lost? By; Joe Crews Introduction The power of choice is a wonderful gift from God. Yet there is one choice God never allowed man to exercise. No one can choose whether or not to be born with a sinful nature. The decision which affects our lives the most was made long, long ago by our forefathers. We have absolutely no choice about the kind of nature we possess at birth. It is a sinful nature. If unchanged it will lead to eternal death. But even though we are born with a fallen nature, God gives us a choice about changing that nature. It is a personal, sovereign choice that no one can take away from us. Without doubt it constitutes the most important decision that any person faces during his lifetime. The choice is whether we yield to that sinful nature and die eternally, or receive a new nature through faith in Christ and live eternally. Much disagreement exists over the kind of choice offered to each one of us. Millions believe that God opens the door for only a once-in-a-lifetime decision and then closes that door forever. It is as though God says, โ€œIโ€™m going to give you only one decisionabout changing over from your doomed condition. Once you decide to be saved you can never choose to be lost again. When you accept Jesus as your Saviour, it will be the final choice you will ever make about your eternal destiny. If you change your mind later and repudiate your decision, it will be too late. No matter how deeply and sincerely you desire to be lost and repent of your repentance, you cannot escape from eternal life. No amount of bitter rebellion, deliberate blasphemy, or iniquitous living can change that once-for-all decision to be saved. I will not allow you any further choice after you accept Jesus as your Saviour.โ€ Basically, this is the belief of a large segment of Christians who advocate the doctrine of eternal security. Another equally sincere group of Christians believes that God leaves the door open for us to change our minds at any time. They believe that salvation is not predicated upon only one irrevocable act or choice of the past, but upon a continuous, personal relationship of the believer with Christ. When the decision to break the love-relationship is made by willful disobedience, the believer ceases to be a true believer and forfeits any assurance of salvation. Millions of Souls at Stake The fantastic implications of this issue are overwhelming. If there is an unconditional future security for all believers, it has to be the most wonderful doctrine in existence: but if it is not true, it surely is one of the most dangerous heresies in the world. Millions could be saved or lost over the decision they make on this one point. Let me give you an example of how it influences the destiny of people day by day. At one of my crusades there were more than one hundred people attending who had been steeped in the belief of eternal security. They were thrilled by the revelation of Bible truth as they listened. The seventh-day Sabbath particularly excited them because they had never before understood it. All were completely convinced that Saturday is the true Sabbath of the Scriptures, and they eagerly accepted the great prophetic doctrines also. But of those hundred people only a very few made any decision to obey the truth. Practically all of them had Sabbath problems connected with their jobs. It would have meant inconvenience, economic hardship, and possible loss of employment for them to follow the truth all the way. Each one who rejected the message gave me the same explanation โ€“ โ€œWe are already saved,โ€ they said, โ€œand we cannot be lost. Why should we run the risk of losing our jobs by keeping the Sabbath? We would not be any more saved by keeping the Sabbath than we are right now, and we certainly cannot be lost by breaking the Sabbath.โ€ Do you see how their argument was consistent with their doctrine? To them salvation was not connected with obedience, or advancing in spiritual growth. It all focused on a past moment when they made a decision for Christ. Whether they obeyed or disobeyed any subse- quent revelation of truth could have no influence whatsoever on their final destiny. They could break the fourth commandment, the seventh commandment, or all of them, and still feel eternally secure in the promise they had claimed โ€œwhen they were saved.โ€ To be sure, these people believed that their disobedience might affect the joy and peace of their relationship, but never the assurance of ultimate salvation. Obviously, this doctrine needs to be deeply examined. Too many eternal consequences hinge upon its acceptance or rejection. We need to answer questions like these: Can we change our minds about being saved? Do we give up our power of choice when we are converted? Does salvation consist of one grand, holy moment of decision, or must we continue in the saving grace of Christ after that decision? Can God take defiling sins into His holy kingdom? Fortunately, the Bible has hundreds of beautiful, clear texts to answer these questions. We will look at them together, and also examine a few texts which have been interpreted to uphold the doctrine of โ€œonce saved, always saved.โ€ No Sin in Heaven Speaking of the New Jerusalem, John said, โ€œThere shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth.โ€ Revelation 21:27. Jesus said, โ€œBlessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.โ€ Matthew 5:8. Paul repeatedly wrote about the exclusion of sinners from heaven. Sin is the only thing that defiles in the sight of God, and no one who willfully practices sin will ever enter into His kingdom. Paul wrote, โ€œKnow ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, . . . nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards . . . shall inherit the kingdom of God.โ€ 1 Corinthians 6:9, 10. Nowhere in the Bible is entrance into Godโ€™s kingdom tied to a momentary โ€“ or even temporary โ€“ faith experience of the past. Salvation is a dynamic, growing relationship with the only One who has eternal life to bestow. It requires continuing contact in order to receive it. The very life of God can be shared with men but NEVER APART FROM A LIVING UNION WITH CHRIST! โ€œHe that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.โ€ 1 John 5:12. Just as the constant creative energy of God is necessary to sustain the universe and to hold atoms together, so His divine power is constantly needed to maintain spiritual life in the soul. When a person willfully chooses to separate from God, the contact is broken, and the spiritual life ceases to flow. God will not violate the will of anyone in making that choice either. For proof that Christians can lose their connection with Jesus and be lost, read John 15:1-6. There Christ explains one of the great mysteries of eternal life. โ€œI am the vine, yeare the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.โ€ Verses 5, 6. The Secret of Continued Life is Continued Abiding Notice that the secret of continued life is continued abiding. If a person does not abide in Christ, he withers, dies, and is finally burned up. This proves that the relation of a believer to Christ is never a static thing based only on a past experience. It is a current, mutual sharing of a common life which is drawn from Him โ€œwho is our lifeโ€ (Colossians 3:4). When the branch is separated from the vine, the source of life is gone, and only death can result. These words of Jesus are too clear to be misconstrued. Even believing, trusting Christians who areconnected to the living vine may choose to separate from the vine. When they do, they die and will be cast into the fire and burned. Nothing can wither and die that has not previously been alive. Security is eternal only for those whose faith is eternally fixed on Jesus, and whose life is connected to the one who is our life. Obviously, we can choose to be lost no matter how saved we once were. Everything depends on maintaining the divine connection with the true vine. Jesus taught the same solemn truth about losing eternal life in the parable of the sower. In explaining the seed which fell among the thorns and the rocks, Jesus said, โ€œThose by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.โ€ Luke 8:12, 13. There are several things to note about this parable. First, only one class will finally be saved โ€“ the ones who brought forth much fruit. The groups represented by the wayside and rocks will not be saved. In verse 12, the wayside hearers did not have a chance to โ€œbelieve and be saved,โ€ but in the next verse the stony ground hearers do โ€œfor a while believe.โ€ What kind of โ€œbelievingโ€ is this? According to verse 12, it is the kind that saves. So the ones who believed for a while were saved for a while, but in time of temptation they fell away. Eventually, of course, they were lost along with all the others, except the fruit-bearers. Here is an unequivocal teaching of our Lord that people can have a saving faith for a while, and yet lose it and be lost. Security is Eternal Only for Those Whose Faith is Eternally Fixed on Jesus Those who read the record of the Gospels carefully will find repeated authority from Jesus to renounce the doctrine of eternal security. In Luke 12:42-46 Christ described in another parable how a faithful servant could turn into an unfaithful one. After asking, โ€œWho then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household . . . ?โ€ Jesus answers His own question: โ€œThat servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing . . . he will make him ruler over all that he hath.โ€ Then Christ explains how that servant could lose his reward. โ€œBut and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.โ€ Verses 45,46. Here is a perfect example by the Master Teacher as to how a faithful and wise servant can be punished with the unbelievers. Jesus was talking about a man whom He had seen faithful enough to trust with heavy responsibilities. Undoubtedly, this servant represents those who carefully served the Lord as true believers. But what happened? That very faithful servant departed from the path of faithfulness and reaped eternal ruin and death. Does this not also remind us of the words of Hebrews 10:38, โ€œNow the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.โ€ The servant in the parable, who was a believer, is now punished with the unbelievers. The faithful can draw back to perdition. Salvation Can Be Forfeited One more parable of Christ spotlights the fact that continued forgiveness is conditional for the believer. The story is found in Matthew 18:21-35, and revolves around the forgiveness of God. A certain king responded to the pleas of his servant and forgave him a large debt. That servant went out and found a fellow servant who owed him a small amount and showed no mercy, throwing him in prison because he could not pay. When the king heard what had happened, he rescinded his cancellation of the large debt and had his servant thrown to the tormentors till he paid in full. No one can deny the obvious teaching of this parable. Even though God graciously forgives those who apply for it, that forgiveness is not without conditions for the future. We can lose that forgiveness by being unmerciful to others. This is in harmony with the words of the Lord in Ezekiel 33:13, โ€œWhen I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.โ€ The principle is repeated in verse 18, โ€œWhen the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.โ€ The secret lies in maintaining the righteous relationship with the Source of salvation. Jesus said, โ€œHe that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.โ€ Matthew 24:13. No one will be saved finally who does not hold out against a course of deliberate sin in the power of God. Those who do not endure to the end will have their names blotted out of the book of life. Advocates of eternal security deny it could ever happen, but read the frightening possibility for yourself in Revelation 3:5, โ€œHe that overcometh . . . I will not blot out his name out of the book of life.โ€ The implication is clear that those who are not overcomers โ€“ who do not endure to the end โ€“ will have their names blotted out. All these verses are really saying the same thing. Willful sin shatters the relationship by which eternal life is obtained. There is an eternal โ€œifโ€ in every consideration of eternal security. โ€œIf we walk in the light . . . the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.โ€ 1 John 1:7. โ€œIf that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.โ€ 1 John 2:24. โ€œIf any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.โ€ Hebrews 10:38. โ€œIf a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch.โ€ John 15:6. โ€œIf a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.โ€ John 8:51. โ€œIf thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.โ€ Romans 11:22. โ€œIf ye do these things, ye shall never fall.โ€ 2 Peter 1:10. โ€œFor we are made partakers of Christ, If we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.โ€ Hebrews 3:14. โ€œIf we endure, we shall also reign with him: If we deny him, he also will deny us.โ€ 2 Timothy 2:12 (RSV). โ€œIf we sin willfully . . . there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins.โ€ Hebrews 10:26. โ€œIf any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.โ€ 1 John 2:15. โ€œYe are my friends, If ye do whatsoever I command you.โ€ John 15:14. โ€œIf ye live after the flesh, ye shall die.โ€ Romans 8:13. Danger of Being a Castaway Paul recognized the fearful possibility of being cast out of Godโ€™s presence in the end unless he curbed the fleshly propensities to sin. Said he, โ€œ. . . lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.โ€ 1 Corinthians 9:27. The word Paul used โ€“ castaway โ€“ is very interesting. It is the Greek word โ€œadokimos,โ€ which is translated โ€œreprobateโ€ in other places. In fact, 2 Corinthians 13:5 declares that Jesus Christ cannot dwell in the heart that is reprobate (adokimos). Titus 1:16 speaks of the abominable and disobedient who are โ€œunto every good work reprobate (adokimos).โ€ Surely Paul had nothing else in mind but that he could be lost if he allowed sin to recapture his life. Paul also speaks of the possibility of born-again believers suffering damnation because they receive the Lordโ€™s Supper unworthily. โ€œFor he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself.โ€ 1 Corinthians 11:29. No one can deny that these people were committed Christians partaking of the symbols of their redemption. Could they fall into damnation and be lost? Paul said they could. What is damnation? The same Greek word (krima) is found in 1 Timothy 5:12. โ€œHaving damnation (krima) because they have cast off their first faith.โ€ How plain it is that believers can โ€œcast off their first faithโ€ and go into final damnation. I have listened many, many times to an explanation of eternal security based upon the analogy of sonship. โ€œMy child is born into my family and he will always be my child. He cannot be unborn. Whether obedient or disobedient, he will always be my child.โ€ This reasoning avoids the central issue. The question is not whether a child can be โ€œunborn,โ€ but whether it can sicken and die. No doctor admonishes new parents about the dangers of the baby getting unborn, but he has much to say about proper care to keep it from dying. In fact, if the baby is not fed, it will soon die. In the same way, Jesus said, โ€œExcept ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.โ€ John 6:53. What was He talking about? In verse 63 He explained, โ€œThe words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.โ€ Unless the Christian lives by the Word of God, he cannot continue to partake of the spiritual life derived from Him. Have we clearly established that continued obedience is necessary to ultimate salvation? Paul wrote, โ€œKnow ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey?โ€ Romans 6:16. When a man chooses to obey Christ no longer and obeys the devil instead, he no longer belongs to Christ, but to Satan. โ€œHe that doeth righteousness is righteous . . . He that committeth sin is of the devil.โ€ 1 John 3:7, 8. The writer of the book of Hebrews gives scores of specific admonitions against falling away from the faith. Hebrews 10:23 opens up a line of argument against the once-saved, always-saved position that no one can refute. The passage begins this way: โ€œLet us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering.โ€ And after that, admonition is given those who might be tempted to absent themselves from the assembly of the believers. Apparently, this is one of the first signs of slipping backward. The author of this epistle, and I think it was Paul, includes himself in the warning. He writes, โ€œFor if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Mosesโ€™ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?โ€ That is from verses 26 through 29. The people described herehad been sanctified by the truth, but fell away into willful apostasy. Now the last few verses of the chapter warn against the casting away of their confidence. Notice this carefully! โ€œCast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. . . . Now the just shall live by faith; but if any man draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.โ€ Verses 35 to 39. Now how could anybody state any more clearly the fact that oneโ€™s eternal salvation is conditional on his remaining steadfast to the very end? Unless there were a possibility that one might cast away his confidence, that he might draw back unto perdition, why would this man of God sound such a warning as he did? In Hebrews 6:4-6 we find another striking statement. โ€œFor it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.โ€ Now I think it would be very difficult to describe more fully a person who had been born again but who later rebelled against God and rejected Christ and spurned the Holy Spirit. He has placed himself out of Godโ€™s reach by his own actions. Therefore, there is no possibility that such a man can be saved as long as he continues to crucify Christ by his disobedience. Branches Can Be Cut Off In the eleventh chapter of Romans, Paul is discussing the fact that many of the physical seed of Israel rejected Godโ€™s Son and were thus cut off. The illustration is used of an olive tree. The branches were the children of Israel, but because of their unbelief, they were broken off, as you will read in verses 17 to 20. Then, some wild olive branches were grafted in, which represents the Gentile Christians. Now note this admonition: โ€œFor if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, IF THOU CONTINUE IN HIS GOODNESS: OTHERWISE, THOU ALSO SHALT BE CUT OFF.โ€ Verses 21 and 22, emphasis added. Please note that any security for those branches depended entirely upon their connection with the tree. The security was conditional. Letโ€™s see whether Peter agrees with these sentiments of Paul. In his second epistle, the first chapter, are listed a number of virtues which should be manifested in the life of every Christian. These are mentioned in verses 5 to 7, and notice that he is writing to โ€œthem that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.โ€ Verse 1. Then they had been given โ€œall things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.โ€ Verse 3. It is very apparent that Peter is addressing these remarks to those who have been converted. But notice the warning he gives: โ€œBut he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall.โ€ Verses 9 and 10. Surely this indicates that Christians can fall from grace. They can turn back from following Jesus. They can even become apostates in the truest sense of the word. In the third chapter, Peter goes on to say, โ€œWherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.โ€ Verse 14. โ€œSeeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.โ€ Verse 17. So we see that Peter does agree with Paul that Christians need to be on guard constantly lest they be led astray, and he indicates the sad fate of those who turn back into sin after they are converted. One of the strongest texts in the Bible that proves a person can turn away from Christ and be lost even after he has made a profession of being saved is 2 Peter 2:20-22: โ€œIf after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.โ€ The lesson here is obvious. Now, those who take a position for unconditional security say that Godโ€™s sons cannot be represented by dogs and sows. Well, maybe they canโ€™t, but Peter did โ€“ and it is the most apt of illustrations. The proverb is painfully plain. They had escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. They had been converted. They had joined Christ on His side. They had turned their lives over to Him, but they remembered the world and the โ€œwallowโ€ of sin. Like the Israelites coming out of Egypt, they remembered the โ€œflesh pots,โ€ the โ€œleeks and onions.โ€ They remembered the pleasures of sin; so, leaving Christ they went back into the world like the hog returns to its wallow in the mire. Certainly no Christian should imitate the habits of a hog, but Peterโ€™s proverb shows that it is possible. The Spirit of God is not silent on this point. Listen: โ€œNow the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times SOME SHALL DEPART FROM THE FAITH, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.โ€ 1 Timothy 4:1, emphasis added. When will this happen? When will some depart from the faith? In the latter times. That would be right now, wouldnโ€™t it? That would be the times in which we are living and the times immediately before us. If you havenโ€™t thought of it before, these are dangerous times. And if you are still unconvinced, thoughtfully read the headlines of tomorrowโ€™s newspaper. On this point โ€œthe Spirit speaketh expressly.โ€ Just what does that mean? It means the Spirit speaks plainly, clearly โ€“ so clearly it is impossible to misunderstand. All right then, what would some do? Some would depart from the faith. So, it is possible to leave the faith, isnโ€™t it? Some do it. They have been in the faith, they have worshiped with the brethren, they have attended church and prayer meeting. They have been actively promoting the gospel, they have given of their means, they have been pastors, officers of the church, and leading laymen; nevertheless, they leave the faith. They are not steadfast and faithful. In the last days come perilous times, with persecutions and serious difficulties, and some do not stand. They are tempted by the things of the world and are seduced by spirits of devils. Sad to say, they give up their allegiance to the Man of the cross. They were on Christโ€™s side, but now they side with His enemy. Please donโ€™t missunderstand. If you want unconditional security, you can have it. It is in Christ, on a day-by-day, moment-by-moment basis. When you take Christ and stay by, you will persevere. There is, and can be, no failure on Christโ€™s part. He will not fail; He is faithful. โ€œCast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee.โ€ Psalm 55:22. He will stand by you as long as you stand by Him. Jesus said of Himself, โ€œI am the way, the truth, and the life.โ€ John 14:6. And John wrote of the Lord, โ€œThis is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.โ€ 1 John 5:11, 12. Many non-Christians think they have security. They will tell you they believe God will admit them to heaven. They will say, โ€œI am as good as people in the church,โ€ or โ€œI feel I will be saved without going to church.โ€ But the truth is, no man is saved on the basis of his feelings. He may be sincere, but his sincerity will not save him. He may be honest, truthful, moral, and a first class citizen, but that wonโ€™t save him. He may be liberal, a supporter of the church and a giver to the needy, but neither will that save him. No man is saved by his works, good as they may be. Remember this, and please never forget it: Christ is the Saviour, not your gifts, not your works. He offers you salvation as a free gift. It is in Christ, and when you receive Christ, you have salvation. โ€œHe that hath the Son, hath life.โ€ 1 John 5:12. But if you donโ€™t have the Son, you donโ€™t have life, and you cannot have eternal security until you have and keep Christ the Son. What Does It Mean for the Christian to Leave His โ€œFirst Loveโ€? โ€œNevertheless, I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy FIRST LOVE. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.โ€ Revelation 2:4, 5, emphasis added. For the Christian to leave his first love, is to backslide, to fall away, to leave the Lord and His service, and to go over to the service of sin, Satan and the world. The Lord calls upon all such to repent and do their first works (the fruits of love), or else โ€“ else what? โ€œI will take thy candlestick out of his place.โ€ This is an ultimatum from the Lord. If the sinner responds, repents, returns to his first love, and does his first works, all is well and good โ€“ he will be saved. But it is his to choose. If he does not do this, his light is removed, goes out, and the backslider is lost. Does the Backslider Always Return to the Lord Before Death? No, far from it. That was the case of the first king of Israel, Saul. It is written of Saul that he was โ€œturned into another man.โ€ โ€œAnd the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be TURNED INTO ANOTHER MAN.โ€ 1 Samuel 10:6 emphasis added. Yet Saul backslid from his high and exalted position, disobeyed the Lord, and at last took his own life (1 Samuel 31:1-6). It cannot be said in this case that Saul was not converted, because God says that he was. Yet, he took his own life with no opportunity of repentance. No Man Can Pluck Out Finally, let us look at the text which has probably been quoted more than any other to support the doctrine of eternal security. Jesus said, โ€œI give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Fatherโ€™s hand.โ€ John 10:28, 29. What a tremendous promise this should be for every trusting child of God! At first glance, it does seem to guarantee some sort of immunity against spiritual loss, but we have not read the entire text. Verse 27 is an integral part of the thought, and it lays down a specific condition for the fulfillment of the promise in verses 28 and 29. โ€œMy sheep hear my voice and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life.โ€ Please notice that it is only Godโ€™s true followers who nestle safely in His protecting hand. He gives eternal life only to the faithful sheep who hear and follow Him. It is this hearing and following which provides immunity against being plucked away by the devil or his agents. The protection is from enemies without who seek to carry off the sheep, but not from unfaithfulness of the sheep who might choose not to follow any longer. No one can pluck them out of the Fatherโ€™s hand, but they may choose to jump out at any time. God never even hints that He will interfere with the freedom of choice of His followers. Christians can choose to be lost just as surely as sinners can choose to be saved. Just think how useless would be all the hundreds of biblical warnings against apostasy if it were impossible to experience it. Why would the Spirit have led Paul, Peter, and all the others to pen such solemn threats and admonitions against eternal loss if they were in no danger of suffering it? And if it is true that the โ€œonce savedโ€ are eternally secure, surely the devil would know it. Therefore, he would never waste any time on believers, knowing how impossible it would be to cause them to be lost. Yet, we all know by experience that Satan works even harder to pull away the saints from following Christ. We have to conclude that salvation does not consist of a single, irrevocable commitment, whether past or present. Being saved is the experience of living Christโ€™s own life by divine imputation and impartation. It is never a reality except in continual, dynamic relationship with Jesus, the source of eternal life. Being saved must be spoken of in all three tenses of time in order to be completely biblical. It has happened, it is happening, and it will happen. Perhaps, this illustration by Glenn Fillman will help explain it. Saved โ€“ Past, Present and Future Bill Jones is fishing several miles out in the ocean. His boat capsizes and sinks to the bottom. He is unable to swim to safety. Just then, another fishing boat comes along, but it is so heavily loaded that it is impossible to take on another passenger. Because they want to rescue the doomed man, however, the crew throws him a rope. โ€œHere, take this rope,โ€ they say. โ€œWe will tow you to shore.โ€ As he takes the rope, Bill Jones says, โ€œThank God, I am saved!โ€ And he is saved, as long as he holds on to the rope. Salvation is his, but he has a part to play in it. If he should at any time release his grasp on the rope and refuse to take it again, he would be lost. So it is with a person who has been rescued from sin. He remains saved as long as he holds on to the hand of Christ. If he should decide to release that hand and clasp the hand of the devil, he would be lost. His salvation depends on his decision and his action. Actually, one can properly speak of salvation in three tenses โ€“ past, present, and future. He can say, โ€œI have been savedโ€ when he takes the rope, โ€œI am being savedโ€ as he is being towed to shore; and โ€œI shall be savedโ€ when he plants his feet firmly on shore. A converted person -has been saved- from the penalty of sin. We call that justification. He -is being saved- from the power of sin, and we call that sanctification. He -shall be saved- from the presence of sin when Christ comes, and that will be glorification. All three of these tenses are used in the Bible in connection with being saved. In Romans 8:24 is the expression, โ€œWe are saved by hope.โ€ Weymouth is a more accurate translation. He says, โ€œWe have been saved,โ€ past tense. The Revised Standard Version correctly renders the phrase in 1 Corinthians 1:18 as โ€œTo us who are being saved.โ€ Then Acts 15:11 states, โ€œthat through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved.โ€ So you see past, present, and future. Now letโ€™s make sure that no one gets the wrong impression from our illustration of the man being rescued from drowning. Does the fact that he must cling to the rope to be saved, mean that we can earn our salvation by our own works? Absolutely not, a thousand times no! Remember that he was being towed by a power other than his own. He was merely cooperating with that power. He was holding on to the rope. He had to do that in order to be pulled to safety. As Christians we must confess our faith in Christ, we must remain steadfast to Him, we must bring forth the fruits of obedience; that is our part in holding on to Christ. He will never let us go. The only way we can separate ourselves from Him is to cut ourselves off deliberately and disconnect ourselves from Him, but we have the power to do that. We are still free moral agents. Our will has not been removed merely because we have become Christians. At any point in our Christian life we can decide to turn back, to choose the things of the world rather than the things of God and heaven. We are saved only through faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour. โ€œThere is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.โ€ Acts 4:12. However, we show our faith by our works. It is a manifestation of our love for Him. Keeping Godโ€™s commandments and doing right are merely the result of His Holy Spirit dwelling in the heart. These are the fruits of the Spirit. We do these things, not in order to be saved, but because we are saved, and as long as we love the Lord with all our heart, we are going to be obedient to Him. We will not let go of the rope. We will continue to cling to Christ as our only hope.

    Who knows what it feels like to grow hard? Many of us do. Not overnight, but slowly—stress cools us, disappointment hardens us, and sin stiffens us—until something inside no longer feels. We remain active outwardly, yet unresponsive inwardly. The question is not whether we can improve our character, but whether our hearts have truly been transformed.

Yet this reveals God’s work—not repairing the old, but replacing it. The stony heart resists; the heart of flesh responds.

    Like a stone untouched by a sculptor’s tools, the human heart cannot be reshaped by effort or discipline. No chisel can break what sin has hardened. We may look polished outwardly while resisting inwardly. But when God lays His hand upon the heart, resistance gives way to response—what once rejected Him now begins to feel, hear, and obey.

Prayer is not self-improvement—it is divine intervention. God gives the heart we cannot produce.

    True change is not self-produced—it is God who works within us. Like a frozen hand thawing before a fire, we do not warm ourselves—we draw near to the heat. God’s love softens what sin has hardened.     So, what kind of heart do you have before God—stone or flesh? You may refine behavior yet remain unchanged within. You don’t need Christ just to improve your life—you need Him to replace your heart. Come to Him, and ask for what only He can give.

    Hello friends, family, and my brothers, and sisters in Christ.

    The Mark of Cain.

    Adam and Eve's first two sons differed vastly in their personalities and behavior. Cain longed to farm and build, while Abel loved to roam the hills and meadows with his flocks. After sin entered this new world because of Adam and Eve's disobedience, God established a sacrificial system and explained that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness for sin (Hebrews 9:22). He told them that these sacrifices pointed forward to the time when Jesus would become a man and die as the Lamb of God for the sins of the world. Abel faithfully brought a young lamb as a sacrifice for his sins, but Cain thought it was unnecessary to obey God's command so precisely. He considered the sacrificial system to be messy and reasoned that as long as he brought an offering and worshiped God, the details wouldn't matter. So he brought an offering of his own works, some produce from the field. Cain watched with jealous anger as fire came down from heaven and consumed Abel's sacrifice but left his own offering untouched. The Lord lovingly urged Cain to humble himself and obey, but Cain stubbornly persisted in his rebellion. Abel also tried to gently reason with his older brother, but Cain flew into a rage. By the time he regained his senses, Abel's bloody body lay still at his feet. God pronounced a curse upon Cain, and when Cain complained about his sentence, the Lord placed a mark upon him lest future generations take revenge for this first homicide. The book of Revelation tells us that, in the last days, there will again be a battle between Christians regarding how and when to worship. Soon everyone will be identified either by the seal of God or the mark of the beast.

    1. Who will be protected through the seven last plagues?

    Revelation 7:3. Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have _________ the servants of our God in their foreheads.

    NOTE: Those who receive God's seal in their foreheads will be protected during the plagues (Psalms 91:7-11).

    NOTE: God clearly states that He gave the Sabbath as a sign of His power to create and sanctify. It is His seal, or mark of authority. The words "seal," "sign," "mark," and "token" are used interchangeably throughout the Bible (compare Genesis 17:11 with Romans 4:11 and Revelation 7:3 with Ezekiel 9:4).

    NOTE: We identified the first beast of Revelation 13 in Lesson 13. What is its mark of power and authority? The best way to discover its mark of authority is to ask the papacy directly. Notice the following section from a Catholic catechism:

    "Q. Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?

    "A. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday."1

    Here is another statement from a catechism:

    "Q. Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept?

    "A. Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her--she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority."2

    So the papacy is saying that its mark of power and authority is making Sunday a holy day--a change that virtually the entire Christian world accepts. (See supplement entitled "What Important Question Does the Papacy Ask Protestants?")

    7. Is either the mark of the beast or the seal of God visible?

    Hebrews 10:16. Saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their ______ will I write them.

    NOTE: Neither the mark of the beast nor the seal of God is outwardly visible. The forehead represents the mind, and the hand is a symbol of work. "On the hand" and "between the eyes" are consistent symbols in Scripture for a person's thoughts and actions (Exodus 13:16; Deuteronomy 6:8; 11:18).

    A person will receive the mark of the beast in his forehead by choosing to believe that Sunday is a holy day in spite of Bible truth. A person will be marked in the right hand by working on God's Sabbath or by outwardly keeping Sunday laws for convenient reasons--such as a job, family, etc. Although the sign is invisible to men, God will know who has which mark (2 Timothy 2:19). In a sense, each person will mark himself. If I respect and regard God's holy Sabbath, He will mark me as His own. If I regard the beast's false Sabbath, He will mark me as belonging to the beast.

    8. How does Jesus determine if we are His servants?

    Romans 6:16. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to __________, his servants ye are to whom ye _____.

    John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

    NOTE: No person has the mark now. When it becomes a forced issue, only those who have received the mark of the beast will be able to buy or sell. At that time, people who keep God's holy Sabbath will do so at the risk of their lives (Revelation 13:15), and those who choose to profane His holy day and officially cast their votes by placing the laws of men above the Law of God will be marked as belonging to Antichrist. All who are loyal to Jesus and His holy day will receive Jesus' glorious seal, thus making them His forever. Those who try to remain neutral will be counted for Antichrist (Matthew 12:30).

    10. What two things does the Antichrist power attempt to change?

    Daniel 7:25. He shall ... think to change times and _____.

    NOTE: Daniel 7 reveals an Old Testament description of the Antichrist power. It clearly predicts that the beast would attempt to change both God's laws and times. The papacy has tried to change God's laws by: (1) omitting the second commandment against veneration of images, (2) shortening the fourth commandment from 94 words to just eight in order to avoid mentioning which day is the Sabbath, and (3) dividing the tenth commandment into two commandments. The papacy attempted to change God's times by: (1) teaching people to recognize the first day of the week as the Sabbath instead of the seventh day, and (2) adopting the pagan Roman practice of beginning each day at midnight instead of sundown. God's timing for the Sabbath is from sundown Friday night to sundown Saturday night (Leviticus 23:32). No mortal should ever dare to tamper with God's sacred law or times (Matthew 5:18).

    11. What was God's criticism of His ancient priests, or pastors?

    Malachi 2:8, 9. Ye have caused many to stumble at the law. ... Ye have not kept my ways, but have been _______ in the law.

    Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

    NOTE: God is still hurt when His pastors are partial to eight or nine commandments and cause many to stumble over His command to keep the Sabbath holy. Virtually all churches admit in their official writings that there is no Scripture support for Sunday sacredness. Tragically, both Protestantism and Catholicism stand guilty before the judgment bar of God for throwing out the Bible Sabbath! God Himself gave the Sabbath as a sign, or mark, of His power to create and His power to sanctify and save (Exodus 31:17; Ezekiel 20:12). Dare any man tamper with this sacred sign, which represents the great God of heaven and all that He stands for?

    12. How did God's ancient leaders regard the great things of His law?

    Hosea 8:12. I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a _______ thing.

    NOTE: Times have not changed. God has placed the Sabbath, His great sign, in the middle of His law and begins that commandment with the word "remember." Yet many people today feel that keeping His seventh-day Sabbath is a strange thing.

    NOTE: Glorious rest and peace enter your heart at conversion. The Sabbath, which means "rest," is a symbol of the rest and peace that comes from the new birth (Hebrews 4:1-10). Those who are truly born again will keep the Sabbath as a blessed sign of that rest (notice verses 4, 9, 10). There is no joy like the joy that comes to a converted person who keeps God's Sabbath holy.

    16. Before you can say "no" to the mark of the beast, you must say "yes" to the seal of God. Jesus is waiting at the door of your heart for an answer. Will you decide now to move under His glorious Sabbath banner as evidence that you have accepted Him as your Creator and Saviour?

    What Important Question Does the Papacy Ask Protestants?

    Protestants have repeatedly asked the papacy, "How could you dare to change God's law?" But the question posed to Protestants by the Catholic church is even more penetrating.

    Here it is officially: "You will tell me that Saturday was the Jewish Sabbath, but that the Christian Sabbath has been changed to Sunday. Changed! but by whom? Who has authority to change an express commandment of Almighty God? When God has spoken and said, Thou shalt keep holy the seventh day, who shall dare to say, Nay, thou mayest work and do all manner of worldly business on the seventh day but thou shalt keep holy the first day in its stead?

    This is a most important question, which I know not how you can answer. You are a Protestant, and you profess to go by the Bible and the Bible only and yet in so important a matter as the observance of one day in seven as a holy day, you go against the plain letter of the Bible, and put another day in the place of that day which the Bible has commanded. The command to keep holy the seventh day is one of the ten commandments you believe that the other nine are still binding who gave you authority to tamper with the fourth? If you are consistent with your own principles, if you really follow the Bible and the Bible only, you ought to be able to produce some portion of the New Testament in which this fourth commandment is expressly altered."1

All who are loyal to Jesus and His holy day will receive Jesus' glorious seal, thus making them His forever. Those who try to remain neutral will be counted for Antichrist (Matthew 12:30). 10. What two things does the Antichrist power attempt to change? Daniel 7:25. He shall ... think to change times and _____. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: Daniel 7 reveals an Old Testament description of the Antichrist power. It clearly predicts that the beast would attempt to change both God's laws and times. The papacy has tried to change God's laws by: (1) omitting the second commandment against veneration of images, (2) shortening the fourth commandment from 94 words to just eight in order to avoid mentioning which day is the Sabbath, and (3) dividing the tenth commandment into two commandments. The papacy attempted to change God's times by: (1) teaching people to recognize the first day of the week as the Sabbath instead of the seventh day, and (2) adopting the pagan Roman practice of beginning each day at midnight instead of sundown. God's timing for the Sabbath is from sundown Friday night to sundown Saturday night (Leviticus 23:32). No mortal should ever dare to tamper with God's sacred law or times (Matthew 5:18). 11. What was God's criticism of His ancient priests, or pastors? Malachi 2:8, 9. Ye have caused many to stumble at the law. ... Ye have not kept my ways, but have been _______ in the law. Virtually all churches admit in their official writings that there is no Scripture support for Sunday sacredness. Tragically, both Protestantism and Catholicism stand guilty before the judgment bar of God for throwing out the Bible Sabbath! God Himself gave the Sabbath as a sign, or mark, of His power to create and His power to sanctify and save (Exodus 31:17; Ezekiel 20:12). Dare any man tamper with this sacred sign, which represents the great God of heaven and all that He stands for? 12. How did God's ancient leaders regard the great things of His law? Hosea 8:12. I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a _______ thing. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: Times have not changed. God has placed the Sabbath, His great sign, in the middle of His law and begins that commandment with the word "remember." If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord honourable; ... Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: God charges spiritual leaders to call Sabbath-breaking a sin and to insist that His people keep His Sabbath day holy. As with the disciples of old, our only safety is in obeying God rather than men (Acts 5:29). 15. When you decide to accept Jesus and fully follow Him, what happens? Matthew 11:29. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find _____ unto your souls. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: Glorious rest and peace enter your heart at conversion. The Sabbath, which means "rest," is a symbol of the rest and peace that comes from the new birth (Hebrews 4:1-10). Those who are truly born again will keep the Sabbath as a blessed sign of that rest (notice verses 4, 9, 10). There is no joy like the joy that comes to a converted person who keeps God's Sabbath holy. 16. Before you can say "no" to the mark of the beast, you must say "yes" to the seal of God. Jesus is waiting at the door of your heart for an answer. Will you decide now to move under His glorious Sabbath banner as evidence that you have accepted Him as your Creator and Saviour? Answer : ____________________ Supplemental Study What Important Question Does the Papacy Ask Protestants? Protestants have repeatedly asked the papacy, "How could you dare to change God's law?" But the question posed to Protestants by the Catholic church is even more penetrating. Here it is officially: "You will tell me that Saturday was the Jewish Sabbath, but that the Christian Sabbath has been changed to Sunday. Changed! but by whom? Who has authority to change an express commandment of Almighty God? When God has spoken and said, Thou shalt keep holy the seventh day, who shall dare to say, Nay, thou mayest work and do all manner of worldly business on the seventh day but thou shalt keep holy the first day in its stead? This is a most important question, which I know not how you can answer. You are a Protestant, and you profess to go by the Bible and the Bible only and yet in so important a matter as the observance of one day in seven as a holy day, you go against the plain letter of the Bible, and put another day in the place of that day which the Bible has commanded. The command to keep holy the seventh day is one of the ten commandments you believe that the other nine are still binding who gave you authority to tamper with the fourth?   • THE ADVENT TRUTH.
    Godโ€™s faithfulness has never meant the absence of trial. It has always meant His presence within it. Daniel wasnโ€™t removed before danger arrived. He was carried through it. The decree still stood. The den was still real. The lions were still hungry. Yet heaven shut their mouths.

    This is how God has always dealt with His people.

    Noah wasnโ€™t taken off the earth before the flood โ€” he was preserved through it.
    Israel wasnโ€™t airlifted out of Egypt โ€” they were protected while the plagues fell around them.
    The three Hebrews werenโ€™t kept from the fire โ€” they were sustained inside it, with One like the Son of God walking beside them.

    And Scripture shows the same pattern at the end of time.

    Godโ€™s people are not promised an escape from tribulation, but protection in the midst of it. Not removal before the crisis, but preservation during it. Revelation doesnโ€™t describe a church disappearing โ€” it describes a people sealed, kept, and guarded while judgments fall on a world that has rejected truth.

    The promise was never, โ€œYou wonโ€™t enter the storm.โ€
    The promise was, โ€œI will be with you in the storm.โ€

    Jesus prayed not that His followers would be taken out of the world, but that they would be kept from the evil one (John 17:15). The final generation will walk a narrow path, surrounded by pressure, deception, and opposition โ€” yet covered by heaven.

    The same God who shut the lionsโ€™ mouths still reigns.
    The same Christ who stood in the furnace still stands with His faithful.
    And the same power that preserved Daniel will preserve those who trust God fully in the last days.

    You donโ€™t need to fear the den.
    You need to know the Deliverer.

For many, following Christ is not just difficult—it is dangerous. In places where the gospel is restricted or rejected, believers live each day with uncertainty, knowing that tomorrow is never guaranteed.

    Imagine the weight they carry—the fear, the stress, the constant vigilance. Yet in the midst of this, their faith remains alive, courageous, and unshaken. Many cry out to God daily for wisdom, strength, and protection—simply to endure and remain faithful.

    And still, there is hope. We are hearing powerful testimonies—especially from former Muslims in countries like Iran and Iraq—who are encountering Jesus and boldly sharing Him within their communities. God is moving, even in the darkest places.

    Every prayer matters. Every voice lifted in faith strengthens them.

    As someone who once worked as an archaeologist in the Middle East, this is deeply personal to me. I have seen the land, met the people, and carry a burden in my heart for them.

    So let us rise together—let our prayers be heard. Pray for protection, for courage, for provision, and for the light of Christ to shine even brighter through them.

    A River of Life.

    Naaman was a brave, rich, and famous commander for the armies of Syria who contracted leprosy, the most dreaded disease of Bible times. Leprosy meant isolation from loved ones and a slow, wretched death. A Hebrew slave girl who worked in Naaman's house said that if her master would only go to the prophet Elisha in Israel, he would heal Naaman of his leprosy. Willing to grasp at any thread of hope, Naaman made the long trip to Israel. With him was a small band of personal bodyguards and a king's ransom to pay for this miracle of healing. When Naaman finally stood before the humble house of the prophet, Elisha would not come out. Instead, he sent his servant with these simple instructions: "Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean." 2 Kings 5:10. The prophet's command to wash implied that Naaman was dirty! Being told to wash seven times and in a muddy river, no less, was too much for the proud Syrian general. In a rage, Naaman spun his horse around and began riding home. But in order to reach Damascus, Naaman had to ride by the Jordan River. As he passed by, Naaman's servants urged him to try the prophet's advice. So he stopped his horse, slid down, and laid aside the armor that covered the awful evidence of his leprosy. Naaman slowly stepped down into the waters of the Jordan. Six times he plunged under the water with no results, but when he came up the seventh time, the leprosy was gone! His skin was as pure and healthy as a baby's. Just as Naaman experienced restoration, you too can have a healing new-birth experience!

    1. What New Testament prophet used the Jordan River for baptizing, or cleansing?

    Matthew 3:1, 5, 6. In those days came ________ the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea. ... Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan.

    NOTE: The Gospel stories begin and end with the subject of baptism. Obviously this is a very important teaching to Jesus (Matthew 28:18, 19).

    2. What glorious Bible ceremony symbolizes a "washing" from the leprosy of sin?

    Acts 22:16. Arise, and be ___________, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

    NOTE: The Bible ordinance of baptism symbolizes the washing away of sin from a person's life, as well as the new birth.

    3. According to the Bible, how many different kinds of baptism are acceptable?

    NOTE: At least 15 different ceremonies are called baptism today, but according to the Bible, there is only one true baptism.

    4. What does the word "baptize" mean?

    Colossians 2:12. __________ with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

    NOTE: The Greek word "baptizo" means "submerge," "plunge under," or "immerse." A person has not been baptized unless he has been completely submerged, or buried, in water. This word "baptizo" is always used in the Bible in reference to the sacred ordinance of baptism. The Greek words for "sprinkling" or "pouring" are never used.

    5. Jesus is our example. How was He baptized?

    Mark 1:9, 10. Jesus came ... and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up ____ of the water, he saw the heavens opened.

    NOTE: John baptized Jesus by immersion in the same river where Naaman was cleansed from leprosy. Note that they were "in" Jordan (not on the riverbank) and that Jesus came "up out" of the water. This is why John was baptizing in "Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there" John 3:23. Christians are to follow the example of Jesus (1 Peter 2:21), who was baptized by immersion "to fulfil all righteousness." Matthew 3:15.

    6. How did Philip baptize the treasurer of Ethiopia?

    Acts 8:38, 39. They went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come __ out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip.

    7. What other truths are symbolized by baptism?

    Romans 6:4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was ____________ up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

    NOTE: Baptism symbolizes Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. There is first death to sin, then burial of the old life of sin in the water, and finally resurrection from the water to a new life. Baptism by immersion fits the symbolism perfectly. The life of sin dies, then there is brief suspension of breath while the person being baptized is leaned backward into the water until the body is fully covered, or buried, in the water. Then the person is raised up out of the water, taking a fresh breath as a newborn baby, to live an entirely new life, symbolizing the resurrection. No other form of baptism fits this Bible symbolism. Some say they keep Sunday holy in honor of the resurrection, but this practice is never mentioned in the Bible.

    8. How important is baptism?

    Mark 16:16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be _______; but he that believeth not shall be damned [lost].

    John 3:5 Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of God.

    NOTE: Baptism is clearly mandated by Scripture as essential. However, when baptism is impossible, as it was for the thief on the cross, Jesus gives that person credit for His baptism (Matthew 3:15).

    9. What blessed ceremony can be compared to baptism?

    Galatians 3:27. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have _____ on Christ.

    NOTE: Baptism is like the marriage ceremony. The Bible says, "For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name." Isaiah 54:5. As a woman takes her husband's name in marriage, so Christians take the name of Christ--thereafter to be called Christians. Both ceremonies must be based on love and commitment if they are to be meaningful. Baptism is as essential to the Christian life as a wedding is to a marriage.

    10. What command did Jesus give to His people just before His ascension?

    Matthew 28:19. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, _________ them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

    NOTE: Peter followed this command when on the day of Pentecost he told the penitent people, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ." Acts 2:38.

    11. What biblical qualifications must precede baptism?

    NOTE: Since an infant cannot comply with any of the above steps, obviously it is not scriptural to baptize a child until he is old enough to comprehend the gospel.

    12. Where did all of the counterfeit forms of baptism originate?

    NOTE: Baptism by immersion was the only form of baptism practiced during Bible times and for centuries after the cross. But then, misguided men introduced other forms of baptism for the sake of convenience. Thus, God's sacred ordinance of baptism was distorted and its rich symbolic meaning obscured.

    13. What does the Bible say about those who put the teachings of men before the truth of God?

    Matthew 15:9. But in ______ they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

    Galatians 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

    14. But doesn't the baptism of the Holy Spirit replace baptism by immersion?

    NOTE: No! Notice that while Peter was preaching (Acts 10:44-48), the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening, many of whom had not been baptized. But even though they had already received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, Peter insisted that they be baptized in water as well.

    15. Is rebaptism ever proper?

    Acts 19:2-5. They said unto him, We have not so much as __________ whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they ________ this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

    NOTE: One day when Paul was preaching in Ephesus, he found 12 men who had been baptized by John the Baptist, but who had never heard of the Holy Spirit. So upon receiving this substantial new light, they were rebaptized. Likewise, if a person has completely lost his Christian experience, he should be rebaptized upon returning to the Lord. Rebaptism is also appropriate if a person was not baptized in the biblical method.

    16. Is baptism connected with joining a church?

    Acts 2:41. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were ________ unto them about three thousand souls.

    Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord __________ to the church daily such as should be saved.

    Colossians 3:15 Ye are called in one body.

    Colossians 1:18 He is the head of the body, the church...

    1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.

    NOTE: The Scriptures are unequivocal. All of God's people are called into one body, which is the church, and we enter it by baptism. After birth, a baby must be placed in a family for nurturing, protection, and growth.

    17. If I refuse baptism, whose counsel am I refusing?

    The Model Baptism
    Jesus was not baptized because He needed cleansing from sin, for He was sinless (1 Peter 2:22). This is why John the Baptist was so perplexed when Jesus came to the Jordan River, asking to be baptized by him. John said, "I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?" Matthew 3:14.

    So why was Jesus baptized? There are three main reasons. First, He was baptized in behalf of those who cannot be baptized themselves. Sometimes when people accept the Lord in prison or in a hospital, circumstances do not allow them to be baptized. Jesus gives them credit for His baptism. The thief on the cross was one example (Luke 23:43). Second, Jesus was baptized as an example, that we should follow in His steps (1 Peter 2:21). And third, Jesus was baptized so we can, by studying His experience, know what to expect by faith.

    To illustrate, let's take the following verses word by word and see what we can expect from our baptism. Matthew 3:16 and 17 reads: "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

    "The heavens were opened" = We receive access to God.

    "He saw" = Our spiritual eyes are now opened, giving us new understanding and perception.

    "The Spirit of God" = We recognize His leading.

    "Descending like a dove" = Peace gently enters our hearts.

    "A voice from heaven" = We will begin to hear that still, small voice.

    "My beloved son" = We are adopted into His royal family and become citizens of a different country.

    "I am well pleased" = God gives us complete acceptance and forgiveness.

A River of Life. Naaman was a brave, rich, and famous commander for the armies of Syria who contracted leprosy, the most dreaded disease of Bible times. Leprosy meant isolation from loved ones and a slow, wretched death. A Hebrew slave girl who worked in Naaman's house said that if her master would only go to the prophet Elisha in Israel, he would heal Naaman of his leprosy. Willing to grasp at any thread of hope, Naaman made the long trip to Israel. With him was a small band of personal bodyguards and a king's ransom to pay for this miracle of healing. When Naaman finally stood before the humble house of the prophet, Elisha would not come out. Instead, he sent his servant with these simple instructions: "Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean." 2 Kings 5:10. The prophet's command to wash implied that Naaman was dirty! Being told to wash seven times and in a muddy river, no less, was too much for the proud Syrian general. In a rage, Naaman spun his horse around and began riding home. But in order to reach Damascus, Naaman had to ride by the Jordan River. As he passed by, Naaman's servants urged him to try the prophet's advice. So he stopped his horse, slid down, and laid aside the armor that covered the awful evidence of his leprosy. Naaman slowly stepped down into the waters of the Jordan. Six times he plunged under the water with no results, but when he came up the seventh time, the leprosy was gone! His skin was as pure and healthy as a baby's. Just as Naaman experienced restoration, you too can have a healing new-birth experience! 1. What New Testament prophet used the Jordan River for baptizing, or cleansing? Matthew 3:1, 5, 6. In those days came ________ the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea. ... Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: The Gospel stories begin and end with the subject of baptism. Obviously this is a very important teaching to Jesus (Matthew 28:18, 19). 2. What glorious Bible ceremony symbolizes a "washing" from the leprosy of sin? Acts 22:16. Arise, and be ___________, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: The Bible ordinance of baptism symbolizes the washing away of sin from a person's life, as well as the new birth. 3. According to the Bible, how many different kinds of baptism are acceptable? Ephesians 4:5. __________ Lord, __________ faith, ____ baptism. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: At least 15 different ceremonies are called baptism today, but according to the Bible, there is only one true baptism. 4. What does the word "baptize" mean? Colossians 2:12. __________ with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: The Greek word "baptizo" means "submerge," "plunge under," or "immerse." A person has not been baptized unless he has been completely submerged, or buried, in water. This word "baptizo" is always used in the Bible in reference to the sacred ordinance of baptism. The Greek words for "sprinkling" or "pouring" are never used. 5. Jesus is our example. How was He baptized? Mark 1:9, 10. Jesus came ... and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up ____ of the water, he saw the heavens opened. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: John baptized Jesus by immersion in the same river where Naaman was cleansed from leprosy. Note that they were "in" Jordan (not on the riverbank) and that Jesus came "up out" of the water. This is why John was baptizing in "Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there" John 3:23. Christians are to follow the example of Jesus (1 Peter 2:21), who was baptized by immersion "to fulfil all righteousness." Matthew 3:15. 6. How did Philip baptize the treasurer of Ethiopia? Acts 8:38, 39. They went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come __ out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip. Answer : ____________________ 7. What other truths are symbolized by baptism? Romans 6:4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was ____________ up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: Baptism symbolizes Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. There is first death to sin, then burial of the old life of sin in the water, and finally resurrection from the water to a new life. Baptism by immersion fits the symbolism perfectly. The life of sin dies, then there is brief suspension of breath while the person being baptized is leaned backward into the water until the body is fully covered, or buried, in the water. Then the person is raised up out of the water, taking a fresh breath as a newborn baby, to live an entirely new life, symbolizing the resurrection. No other form of baptism fits this Bible symbolism. Some say they keep Sunday holy in honor of the resurrection, but this practice is never mentioned in the Bible. 8. How important is baptism? Mark 16:16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be _______; but he that believeth not shall be damned [lost]. John 3:5 Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of God. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: Baptism is clearly mandated by Scripture as essential. However, when baptism is impossible, as it was for the thief on the cross, Jesus gives that person credit for His baptism (Matthew 3:15). 9. What blessed ceremony can be compared to baptism? Galatians 3:27. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have _____ on Christ. Answer : ____________________ NOTE: Baptism is like the marriage ceremony. The Bible says, "For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name." Isaiah 54:5. As a woman takes her husband's name in marriage, so Christians take the name of Christ--thereafter to be called Christians. Both ceremonies must be based on love and commitment if they are to be meaningful. Baptism is as essential to the Christian life as a wedding is to a marriage. 10. What command did Jesus give to His people just before His ascension? Matthew 28:19. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, _________ them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. What does the Bible say about those who put the teachings of men before the truth of God? Matthew 15:9. But in ______ they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
