From this: to this:

1. Crop the picture to the size you want and sharpen it as needed. At this point I had something like this:

2. Next, I thought the picture needed brightening, so I duplicated the image and set it too screen 70% opacity and merge the layers. Then I went to Colors>Hue-Saturation and set the saturation to 20. Now, it should like this:

3. At this point, I decided to make the icon black&white. I went to Colors>Desaturate>Average.

4. Now I added some color to the black&white and background. I filled a new layer with #a98330 and duplicated it 3 times. Then I moved the first two layer below the main picture and set the top one to screen 30%. I set the other to to overlay 50% opacity. Then I set the the main icon to darken only. This gives it a brownish feel.

5. As you can tell, the picture is a bit too green. I thought it needed a little red. So, I filled another new layer with #820900. I duplicated it and set the first to overlay 40% opacity, and the other to difference 35% opacity. I moved the difference below the main picture and now it should look something like this.

5. Now it looks much better, but the icon has that irritating brown line randomly in the picture. So, I decided to erase everything but William. Using the fuzzy selevt tool, I picked the contagious areas and erased them. (You can also simply use a circle fuzzy to erase around him. Either way works!) Now it should like something like this:

6. Since the picture is very boring and plain, I decided to make it more interesting. I duplicated the main layer and flipped it. I set the duplicate to darken only like the main picture. Then I moved the first picture more to the left and the other to the right. It should like something like this:

7. Next, I decided to add the below texture by nokitas

I duplicated it and set the top to screen 50% and the bottom to difference 50% opacity. Then I duplicated the same texture two more times, with same setting and
flipped them both. It should look like this:

8. Now we're almost there. As you can tell, because I moved the texture you can see a border. So, I erased the edge of the textures and blended it using a fuzzy circular brush and got this:

9. Finally, I added text using the font, Impact Condensed and the color #fff9ac and tada! Its done.

Well, this is by far the strangest post I've ever made. Over half of these icons I made a year ago and the other half are very recent. You kind of tell from the differences in style. Anyway, its great to be back! I hope everyone enjoys the icons. There are tons of them! :)

Attempting to recreate this:

1. Before I did anything else, I cropped the picture and sharpened it as needed.

2. Once I had a base, I thought it needed brightening. So, I duplicated it twice. Set the top duplicate to to overlay 20% opacity and the other to screen 100% opacity. Merge the three layers and it should look something like this:

3. At this point, I thought the picture needed a little brightening up. I went to Colors>Hue-Saturation and set the saturation to 30. The saturation level depends on the picture.

4. Now the picture looks pretty decent, but I thought the eyes needed some sharpening to define them better. I took a very small circlular brush around the size of .1 and zoomed into the eyes. (This also depends on the picture.) Once they looked better, they should look something like this:

5. At this point, the picture looks good enough to be an icon, but I wanted to change the coloring to make the picture softer. This step is the real trick. First, I duplicated the current icon twice. I set the top duplicate to overlay 60% opacity and the other to difference 30%. I sharpened it a bit more and walla:

6. (optional) Now, after already finishing the icon, I played with it a bit more and came up with one more result. This is completely optional, but it adds to the overall smooth effect. Go to New layer>transparency and fill it with #890900 or just dark red. Duplicate it and set the top to overlay 60% opacity and the other to difference 20% opacity. Now it looks like this:

1. First I cropped the picture and sharpened it as needed.

2. Now in order to enhance it to make it pretty, I duplicated it twice and set the first duplicate to screen 80% opacity and the
other to overlay 100% opacity.

3. Then i went to layers>hue-saturation and set the saturation to 40 and made a new layer and filled it with
#d1ffe7, setting to burn 100% opacity.

4. At this point, the picture looks good, I could've stopped right here if I had wanted too. The coloring is nice, and everything is cropped well, but I wanted to give it kind of a wonder feeling. Deciding to add light textures. First I made a new layer and put this texture in it.

5. I set it to lighten-only 50% opacity and duplicated it. I rotated the duplicate at an angle of 90 degrees, making it look like this:

6. I set it to lighten-only 50% opacity. Next I made another new layer and put this texture in it.

7. And set it to, yet again, lighten-only 60% opacity. Now the picture should look something like this.

8. Next, I made a new layer and added another texture.

9. I duplicated it three times and set the first to lighten-only 50% opacity. The second I desaturated and set to screen 50% opacity. The last layer I moved so the big red spot was over the pevensies running (mainly Susan and Lucy) and set it to lighten-only 30% opacity.

10. Now as you can see theres a little square of red where I moved the texture. So, I erased the edges of that layer so
that it appeared to be part of the picture and not a random red square. I'd suggest using a small fuzzy brush at the opacity of about 50%. Now it should look something like this:

11. Once I was done that, I added text and set it to overlay 100% opacity and I was done. :)

1. First I cropped the picture and sharpened it as needed.

2. At this point, I thought the picture looked really dark, so I duplicated it and set it to screen 100% opacity, then merged the two.

3. Now, it looks really pale! To fix that, I went to Colors>Color-Balance. Set midtones: Magent/Green -30, Cyan/Red -50, Yellow/Blue -10. Highlights: Magenta/Green -10, Cyan/Red 10.

4. Next I duplicated the base twice and set the first to overlay, 100% opacity and the second overlay, 20% opacity. Then, I went to Colors>Hue-Saturation and set the Saturation to 40.

5. Now, I thought the icon needed some more blue and green. In order to do this, I went to Colors>Color-Balance. Set midtones: Magent/Green -10, Cyan/Red -50. Then, I made a new layer and filled it with #d1ffe7, setting to burn 100% opacity. Then I duplicated this layer and set it to burn 40% opacity.

6. (optional, depending on the pictures lighting) Last, I made two more new layers and filled the first with #ffd6b7, setting to burn 20% opacity. The second you fill with #422400 and set it to overlay 10% opacity.

Going from this to this

It's made in Gimp but it's easily translatable

1. I took the original photo here and cropped it and sharpened it as needed making it look something like this:

2. Since the icon looked really dark and plain I triend to brighten it up a bit. So I duplicated it and set the duplicate to screen 80%(the opacity depends on the picture) and merged the layers. Then to add color, I went to layers>color>hue-saturation and set the saturation to 50%. Then I went to layers>color>color balance. Midtones: Cyan/Red -100, Magenta/Green -20, Yellow/Blue 50. Highlights: Cyan/Red -30. Shadows Cyan/Red 10. Now it should look something like this.

3. Next I duplicated the picture and set it to overlay opacity(or soft light) 50% and merged the layers. Then I went to Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur and set it to 0.3. Then I made a new layer and filled it with #cfffff and set it to burn 100%. Now it looks something like this.

4.Next I duplicated the base and set it to multiply 20% and merged them. Then I duplicated the base again and set that to overlay(or soft light) 40% and merge those layers. And finally duplicate the layer one more time and set it to screen 50%. Now it should look something like this.

5. Next I duplicated the base and went to filters>blur>motion blur and set it to Linear. Length 24 and Angle 200. Then I duplicated that layer twice and set the first to overlay(or soft light) 70% and the second to screen 100%. Now the blur layer should look something like this.

6.Last I erased the areas around the wardrobe, Lucy and the floor. And tada... its done. If you have any questions please feel free to ask me.
