Really exciting results from a collaboration between OCL and Saptarshi Purkayastha's lab at the Indiana University Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. The novel ScispaCy-LOINC algorithm created and demonstrated by Parvati Naliyatthaliyazchayil and Dr. Venkat Ramana Sangam has already been incorporated into OCL's multi-algorithm LOINC matching approach available soon in the OCL Mapper. Congratulations on your innovative work and publication in JAMIA! cc Joe Amlung Andrew Kanter Jonathan Payne Regenstrief Institute, Inc.

Excited to share new work on automated LOINC mapping using biomedical NLP, now published in JAMIA. LOINC mapping is one of those problems that sounds simple until you actually try it! In this study, we developed ScispaCy-LOINC, a biomedical NLP-based LOINC mapping algorithm for lab data, that: ➤ identifies clinical entities using ScispaCy ➤ links them to UMLS CUIs ➤ assembles candidate LOINC codes using LOINC Parts ➤ ranks candidates using a weighted scoring framework ➤ evaluates performance alongside two Open Concept Lab mapping approaches Takeaway: scalable LOINC mapping may require combining algorithmic strategies, rather than relying on a single method, especially across diverse and messy real-world clinical datasets. Thankful to all co-authors: Saptarshi Purkayastha, Jonathan Payne, Andrew Kanter, Dr. Venkat Ramana Sangam, Joe Amlung Full read at - https://lnkd.in/dyBhdZNG

Happy #LOINCDay! February 16 marks the 32nd anniversary of LOINC—the universal language for health measurements and observations. While the codes provide the structure, it is the global community who provides the soul. We celebrate the thousands of dedicated mappers, researchers, and terminologists worldwide who have contributed their expertise to LOINC in these 30+ years. Your collaborative spirit has turned a bold idea into a cornerstone of modern digital health. #LOINC #HealthIT #Interoperability #HealthInformatics Regenstrief Institute, Inc.

I’m excited to take the reins as Chair of the #JIC Joint Initiative Council and to continue advancing meaningful collaboration across the global standards community. I’m energized by what lies ahead and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated leaders and organizations. My sincere thanks to Daniel Vreeman for his thoughtful leadership and for setting such a strong foundation — Dan, thank you for leading the way. I’m also deeply appreciative of the generous shout-out from Rachel Dunscombe, CEO Health Level Seven International during the recent HL7 International Working Group meeting. Rachel, I look forward to working closely together in the months ahead. A special thank-you as well to April Lackey for serving as Secretariat, and to Eza Hafeza as Alternate Chair. I’m grateful for your partnership and leadership as we move forward. To the JIC and all who contribute to this important work: looking ahead with optimism and appreciation for this remarkable collaboration — and excited to build on our shared momentum. https://lnkd.in/gzKubfEd Regenstrief Institute, Inc. This week the Joint Initiative Council for Global Health Informatics Standardization (JIC) held its final meeting of the year—and my last as Chair. It's been an honor to serve this remarkable coalition of 15 international standards development organizations committed to collaboration that advances health around the world. That collective spirit has driven significant progress on efforts like the International Patient Summary, helping close information and care gaps while unlocking new digital freedoms. This progress reflects the unique perspective and expertise of each organization—and the JIC is where we bring those capabilities together. I couldn't have done it without the support of Rebecca Parsons, PMP from Health Level Seven International as Secretariat. And thank you to all of the dedicated colleagues across these organizations who make this work possible! I'm delighted that Marjorie Cowan Rallins will be serving as the next Chair of the JIC, and I'm excited to see new opportunities blossoming with additional collaborators like the Global Digital Health Partnership (GDHP). https://lnkd.in/eDSJR5Hm JIC members include: CDISC CEN/TC 251 Health Informatics DICOM Standard GMDN AGENCY (Global Medical Device Nomenclature Agency) GS1 Health Level Seven International ICCBBA IEEE Standards Association | IEEE SA IHE International ISO Health Informatics [TC 215] ITU LOINC OECD - OCDE openEHR International SNOMED International

I could not be prouder of the tiny Gravity Project Terminology team that could. Buoyed by the support of our terminology partner LOINC, we are finally releasing a white paper detailing our incredibly nerdy "Terminology Curation Process." Personally, I want to thank the Gravity members and partners who offered an external review: AHIMA and Sue Bowman, UHC, and Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy I am daily grateful for the amazing, brilliant team I get to work with daily Asha Immanuelle RN, PHM, CPHIMS, CPCHE Sara Behal Monique van Berkum Susan Matney, PhD, RNC-OB, FAAN, FACMI, FHIMSS, FHL7 And the team members who have moved on, but were crucial in the early years of our methods Himali Saitwal, MS and Linda Hyde And the process would not exist without the members, subject matter experts, and community who all contribute to the continuous evaluation and refinement of our consensus work. Science! ✨ Go team.
Gravity Project was founded in 2019 as a Health Level Seven International #FastHealthcareInteroperabilityResources (FHIR®) Accelerator Project, with a mission to develop data standards to address the social determinants of health (SDOH). Before the project’s inception, there were significant gaps in terminology for SDOH concepts across standardized assessments, diagnoses, goals, and interventions. Over the years, the Terminology Workstream process has become a model of best-in-class, evidence-based, open, consensus terminology development through the formal “Gravity Terminology Curation Process." The rigorous methods and care are the anchor for our value set reference in regulation and policy. Given the strength and recognition of this process, outside entities have long requested documentation of Gravity methods to adapt them for other use cases. The Terminology Workstream is pleased to announce the publication of “Gravity Project Social Determinants of Health Terminology Lifecycle.” The document, found on our Confluence, details all primary sources and steps for the “Gravity Terminology Curation Process,” from planning through to value set and content maintenance. Many thanks to the member reviewers and community members who have helped shape the open consensus process and this document, through 6 years of continuous improvement. 🎯 At the LOINC 2025 Conference, experts spotlighted the #InternationalPatientSummary (IPS) as a practical blueprint for developing globally aligned, privacy-protective standards for Social Determinants of Health (#SDOH). The message was clear: progress depends on international collaboration, shared roadmaps, diverse perspectives, and strong alignment across global organizations to support ethical, real-world adoption. 🔗 Check out this post to learn more about the role of the IPS in advancing SDOH: https://lnkd.in/g6MghKT5 John D'Amore Michael Nusbaum BASc, MHSA, FHIMSS
