[sticky post] Hiatus

Unfortunately we need to put this community on hiatus. We are just not available to be here at LJ to keep it going or to keep people interested. I am not sure whether we will be back. We want to thank every single one of you for joining us and playing along.

There are a few of us who have migrated to DW and we may finish out this year's challenge there. If anyone is interested, you are free to join us. No pressure, we just wanted to keep the option open.

I thought I would get the ball rolling with recommendations!

One of my favorite books of last year was The Midnight Library by Matt Haig (Fiction, Magical Realism)

Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices . . . Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets? A novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.

*This book taught me a lot about regret.

My second recommendation is Omens, Cainsville #1 by Kelley Armstrong (Urban Fantasy, Paranormal, Fiction)

Twenty-four-year-old Olivia Taylor Jones has the perfect life. The only daughter of a wealthy, prominent Chicago family, she has an Ivy League education, pursues volunteerism and philanthropy, and is engaged to a handsome young tech firm CEO with political ambitions.

But Olivia’s world is shattered when she learns that she’s adopted. Her real parents? Todd and Pamela Larsen, notorious serial killers serving a life sentence. When the news brings a maelstrom of unwanted publicity to her adopted family and fiancé, Olivia decides to find out the truth about the Larsens.

Olivia ends up in the small town of Cainsville, Illinois, an old and cloistered community that takes a particular interest in both Olivia and her efforts to uncover her birth parents’ past.

Aided by her mother’s former lawyer, Gabriel Walsh, Olivia focuses on the Larsens’ last crime, the one her birth mother swears will prove their innocence. But as she and Gabriel start investigating the case, Olivia finds herself drawing on abilities that have remained hidden since her childhood, gifts that make her both a valuable addition to Cainsville and deeply vulnerable to unknown enemies. Because there are darker secrets behind her new home and powers lurking in the shadows that have their own plans for her.

*I am on the last book of the series and I really enjoyed it a lot.

Please feel free to comment here with your recommendations or you are welcome to make your own post if you'd like.

This year, with as busy as the three of us are, we are pinching a card from @shadowbooker on Instagram. Thanks to justjo2u for finding her! I would definitely recommend following her if you are on Instagram. She has a lot of lovely book related graphics/digitals that she shares and this one sounds so much fun and definitely stress-free.

12 MONTHS TO READ 12 BOOKS RECOMMENDED BY 12 FRIENDS

We are not quite sure on the prize for 2023 or if there will be one, but we will let you know later in the year. We hope you join us in this challenge. Please feel free to create posts with your book recommendations. Friends definitely include social media friends.

Happy New Year everyone! Jenn, Jo and Kelly

My first full house on the Book Bingo; I managed to read books with all letters of the Alphabet (except Y, which was optional).

I would have probably completed it faster, but I was a bit pedantic and deemed any book with "The" at the start to begin with "T"!

I am going to go one further, and read a book beginning with "Y" next; Yes, Man by Danny Wallace.

Hello all! It’s December already. Very hard to believe! I am having trouble logging into LJ from my computer so I’m doing this via my phone. Hopefully it turns out ok.

If you’ve achieved a blackout on your card this year, please make a comment with a link to your card or post a picture of your card in the comment. I will start making a list for the $25 Amazon gift card drawing that will take place on Jan 1.

Thank you everyone who participated in this year’s challenge!

I want to apologize for us being MIA for the majority of the summer. Work and home life were extremely busy for the three of us. I hope everyone has read lots and lots of books this summer and are picking good ones for the fall and winter. We do still plan on having the drawing for the $25 amazon gift card for anyone who covers their entire card. We will start taking names a little later this year.

Happy Reading!!
