HQAL Update November 10

I have finally decided that I want to do English Paper Piecing for my next quilt project, so have been looking around for patterns I might try. The choices are a little overwhelming, but I have finally decided that I will try doing some Lucy Boston blocks.

I still have to decide on size and make my templates, but it will be a fun project to look forward to once I have a few project deadlines met. I expect my progress will be quite slow until after Christmas!

But now its time to visit my fellow quilters and see what they are up to!

This Hand Quilt Along is an opportunity for hand quilters and piecers to share and motivate one another. We post every three weeks, to show our progress and encourage one another.  If you have a hand quilting project and would like to join our group contact Kathy at the link below.

SAL Update – November 3

The past three weeks have been a little crazy, with preparations for the Middle School Solo Contest, but I did manage some stitching, as it was a good way to clear my head in the evenings.

Last time I was here:

Now I am here:

I was hoping that adding some of the words would serve as markers, and indeed they did! It is very helpful to be able to check alignment against the words, resulting in fewer mistakes. In spite of all the really light colors I am still enjoying working on this. Once this grass edge is finished, I have some pretty mindless rows to do, so hoping for big progress by the next update.

Now its time to check out everyone else’s work!

SAL Update – October 13

It’s time for an update on my current cross stitch project! I haven’t stitched quite as much this round because I have been “distracted” with a new knitting project, but I think I have still gotten a good chunk done.

Here’s where I was:

And here’s where I am now:

Now I’m off to visit the rest of the group, why not come along?

HQAL September 29

Happy dance time! I sat down the other day and finished quilting my little table topper. I decided not to add much more quilting; I wasn’t really feeling it, and I just wanted to finish it! I had some left over fabric to use for binding, which got one more piece off the cutting table, so that worked out well.

I don’t have another project in mind at this point, so will just have to wait and see what I come up with next! I hope you will take a moment to visit the other members of this group. There are some lovely quilted objects in the mix, some big quilts, some mixed media, etc.

SAL Update – September 22

I am still enjoying this project even though I spend time ripping things because I get lost! The colors blend so closely it is sometimes difficult to see the differences!

I was here last update:

And now I am here:

I have reached the left edge and am working my way down that side at present. I decided to add the title, so I could use it as a “landmark.” Still mostly half crosses. I did figure out that this is 18 count fabric, though it still seems really small!

Now I’m off to visit the other members of our group, won’t you join me?

HQAL Update – September 8

I totally missed the last update, I just forgot! I have started quilting a table topper. So far I have just done outlining. I haven’t decided if I will do more or keep it simple.

Here’s my progress:

I think I will add something to the corners, and something to the diamonds, along with a little heart in each of the corners. Right now I have a wedding dress to work on and the accompanying quilt for the gift, so I may not do much with this until after that is done, but I’m feeling the tug for hand quilting after a full week of FMQ, so I may get more accomplished than I think!

SAL Update – Sept. 1

Happy September everyone! I have started a new project given to me by one of my piano moms. It is a Dimensions kit. I have actually never had a cross stitch kit, so this is new territory for me! All of my previous projects have come from a magazine or a book.

I was daunted at first, because it uses 22 count Aida, but it is mostly half cross, so actually not too bad. I have had some counting difficulties, but finally have everything fixed and things are going well now. I have made good progress, and am close to the center line now, and working my way down.

The picture is the sea at sunset, and so far I think the threads are doing a great job of capturing the changing colors. It’s very subtle, so difficult to pick out the pattern unless you are outside in the sunshine!

My current evening rotation contains only two projects, this and some hand quilting, so I expect to make fairly consistent progress here.

Here’s where I am now:

Now I’m off to see what others are working on in my group, you can come along!

SAL Update – August 11

I am so late in posting, but I just had to finish!

Here’s where I was last time:

And here is my completed piece:

I am going to use this as the front of a new cover for my serger.

While I am late to the party this time, I am sure that the rest of the group has already posted their progress for this round. Enjoy your morning brew and check out their creativity.

Christmas in July Final Update

My final post for Christmas in July comes as I am running back and forth from String Camp. It has taken me two days to do this simple post, but hurrah, and am finally here!

While I didn’t get all the ornaments finished, I made huge progress, and I’m very pleased with my final count.

In addition to the 19 hats, nine diamonds, and five mini quilts, I have eight gingerbread boys ready for bow ties,

and nine stockings, with just two or three to go, depending on the number of new students I get this fall.

Still to go are some ribbon trees and 3 Nativity ornaments out of felt, which I will start in September. I think one Saturday morning session will be enough to finish the basics, and another afternoon during Thanksgiving to add final touches on everything.

Garden Update – July 29

We have started picking stuff! I thinned two rows of carrots and got enough to blanch six packages, and we picked a half gallon pail of green beans this afternoon. There will be more tomorrow, and hopefully enough to do a canner load (16 pints) before the end of the week.

The first tomato is almost ripe, so we will have out first BLT’s this week. Alas, the lettuce is past prime now, but I’ll be able to find a few good leaves out there. This week we will pull most of it out and reseed for the remainder of the summer. DH also started a bed of spinach, Swiss chard and collard greens (probably for the chickens.)

We have masses of cantaloupe blossoms, but I think we have to pick a bunch of them so the boy blooms come along. The cucumbers are also blooming, and there are lots of tiny ones now.

A bunch of the beets are ready to be pulled for pickling, but it will have to wait, because I am at camp all this week and we are short one accompanist. I will be helping to pick or snap green beans, but the pickling will have to wait until this weekend. Things will be a bit cooler then too, which will help.

We are seeing the pumpkin vines in amongst the corn, but no clue if there are any pumpkins yet. One or two would be plenty, so we’ll have to wait and see. The corn is a grinding variety, and I’m not sure how successful it was yet. There are plenty of ears, but they still look very small to me.

The pinto beans are doing great, it will be interesting to see how many we get in the end. DH actually measured out what he planted, so we will be able to do the math and see what the yield is. The potatoes look like they might be about finished. The plants are starting to die back, and we can see some potatoes poking through the ground.

We survived the 106 temps last week, but had to put on a lot of water. Even the poblano peppers wilted! They are planted in buckets so we can bring them in and maybe have peppers for Chile rellenos all winter.
