[Personality] When one thinks of Ukitake, perhaps the word that comes to mind easiest is “friend.” He is very friendly and will accept anyone with a smile, even strangers. He gives people a chance to prove themselves to him and will not judge them based on an opinion other than his own, even if that opinion is trusted. Ukitake can read people very well and thus acts on his own judgment. For the most part, he focuses on the good in people and will accept them optimistically, even though he is not blind to their flaws.
Because of this attitude, Ukitake is highly-respected by others, but he doesn’t let it get to his head. Despite being popular, as he has been his entire life as his mentor, Yamamoto Genryuusai, has pointed out, Ukitake keeps a very level head and remains reasonably down-to-earth. He’s kind and genuine. This makes him very approachable, whether someone wants to spend time innocently with him or ask for advice. He doesn’t turn anyone away, nor does he leave those he cares about to struggle on their own. He is especially protective of his subordinates and those who care about them and will protect them if he needs to, even if rules are broken in the process. Ukitake follows rules well, but his heart drives him more. This is especially evident when he stood up against Yamamoto, along with his best friend, Kyouraku Shunsui, so his subordinate, Kuchiki Rukia, could escape execution.
However, like anyone else, Ukitake is not perfect. While he isn’t cocky, he does have an extraordinary amount of pride. He likes to save people, to play the hero. When Aizen Sousuke was “killed” early on in the Soul Society arc, Ukitake regretted not being able to act, even though it happened in the middle of the night when he, and most other people, was asleep. For the most part, however, he makes responsible decisions, and lives up to his long-standing rank as Captain.
His philosophy when it comes to fighting is to know the difference between fighting for life and fighting for pride. He considers pride to be very important to people. While it would be good to save someone’s life, for obvious reasons, he reminds his subordinates that their pride could also be on the line. Ukitake believes it is more honorable to die with your pride intact than live with it broken. For what is a man without his pride?
But in short, Ukitake is a lover of life, preferring to spend his time feeding fish or trimming a bonsai tree (though he has no real skill for it) instead of running around missing the simple joys of the world around him. He takes life one breath at a time and can appreciate the slow days so he can just be. And what makes this all even more interesting is the fact that he has lived his entire life with Tuberculosis, which is what caused his hair to turn white. But instead of complaining about how unlucky he is, Ukitake accepts his illness and acts as if he never had it. It occasionally slows him down, and stress brings on the attacks more easily, but he never gives up and he never blames anything on the illness. He treats it more like a stumbling block that he must constantly overcome.
[Specialties/Abilities] As a Shinigami, and one of the senior captains of the Gotei 13, Ukitake is very powerful, especially when it comes to kidou (demon arts). It is assumed he can cast pretty much any spell because of his strength in that area, and because he is one of the oldest and most experienced captains, so the low-level and high-level spells come easily to him. He also can use shunpo, or flash-step to travel quickly. To the untrained eye, it would appear he blurs into and out of thin air when he travels, but it is actually just running very quickly. He can sense others’ reiatsu (spiritual pressure) if he knows them well enough
He fights with a zanpakutou, Sougyou no Kotowari, which looks like a normal katana in its sealed state. Each zanpakutou is unique and born with their personal Shinigami and dies with them, as well. They are sentient, having a spirit of their own, but work in tandem with their Shinigami. As their bond and trust deepens, the zanpakutou allows their Shinigami to learn of the blade’s releases, called Shikai and Bankai. Ukitake, as a Captain, knows both.
In canon, we have only learned Sougyo no Kotowari’s Shikai. In order to release Shikai, Ukitake must recite the incantation, “All waves rise now and become my shield, Lightning strike now and become my blade.” The blade then splits into two blades connected by a cord that has five charms on it. In this form, Sougyou no Kotowari can absorb an opponent’s attack through the left blade, using the cord and charms to intensify the power, as well as speed it up, and leaves the right blade, aiming for the original attacker. This makes it look like Sougyou no Kotowari attacked on its own, making the zanpakutou very powerful.
[Affection] Ukitake is very open to affection. Hugs, cuddling, brofists, he is all up for it. He has to work up to kissing, however, because of his illness. So just warn him if your character is going to get smoochy so there will be less flailing. XD
[Fighting] Maiming is go go go. Let me know if you want to kill him for some reason. And since he is a Bleach character (and the good guys don't die in Bleach), it will be difficult. But also because he is one of the most powerful captains in the Gotei 13, he will put up one hell of a fight, coughing fits included.
[Other Permissions] Mind-reading, wall-breaking, it's all good!
[Other Facts] He loves kids. Having seven siblings will do that to you.
