Belated update on the state of my health...

Okay, so I'm really horrible at keeping in touch. Sorry, people. Here's what's been going on:

So about a month ago I started having kidney trouble. Turns out I have this rare disease called vasculitis, and I've just come off of the month long immunosuppressant treatments. Everything's slowly starting to get better, but the drugs are going to really start taking effect in the next few months. So here's hoping. Also they're reducing the dosage of the steroids I'm taking, finally, so I'm starting to sleep again, yay. It was giving me major insomnia for awhile, there.

Other than that, I've gotten really into cooking, lately. I never used to like it, but I'm having so much fun now. Yays! Been trying out a lot of new things. And making shit up as I go along, lol.

Also finally broke down and started watching an anime, which I used to avoid for personal reasons related to annoying people trying to get me to watch things. I have gone to the dark side. *laughs*

Right, so I've been having all these health crises, right? But over the past few months, I've been steadily getting better. I was even at the point where I'd put in a few applications to find a part time job. I feel fine. But now? Apparently my kidneys are working at 16%. That's not a good number. And I STILL FEEL FINE. *Sigh* Spent all day at the doctor's yesterday, going to spend all day today getting ultrasounds and probably kidney biopsies. Well, one of each. I doubt they're going to mess up and have to do it over and over again.

My new kidney doctor's really nice, at least. He seems like he'd be a lot of fun if this wasn't so serious. And he seems to know what he's talking about.

Wow. Just... wow.

Since I have a habit of following veetvoojagig around the internet... I'm back, too. Hi, guys, to anyone who's still around. I pretty much only used this thing for fics and icons, lol, so I'm not sure who even remembers me.

Anyway, for those who still care, I've been having a pretty rough time. Back in November, I got really sick, and only recently found a doctor who has any idea what might be causing it. I've been too fatigued to work, and only rarely have enough energy to leave the house. I'm really hoping this new guy can figure out what I have, because this is really getting old.

A/N: I started this fic more than two years ago, then abandoned it. I'm trying to figure out why.

I stood, gazing admiringly at myself in the mirror. This was good. An outfit to keep. Quite definitely. A turn, so I could see my back. Yes. A slow smile crossed my lips. Fabulous, as they say.

Too late, I heard the click of the door latch, and whirled to see my partner standing, mouth agape, in the threshold. Merde. I closed my eyes. Not again.

“What the hell?” When I looked up, Bennet had collapsed weakly against the doorframe, eyes still wide in total shock.

A few long, cautious strides and I was at his side. I grabbed his arm and pulled him firmly into the room. Why the man couldn’t learn to knock… it would save him so much pain.

“You… You’re wearing…” He couldn’t seem to bring himself to say it.

I looked at him in sardonic amusement. Yes, my eyes silently glinted at him, I am. My smile was a dare: What are you going to do about it?

For the moment, nothing, it seemed. His gaze followed my arm up from where my hand rested on his wrist, skimming hurriedly over the brief scraps of lacy red fabric stretched across my chest, down my finely sculpted abdomen, sliding past the matching lace below, barely enough for decency, then down, down my long, shapely legs to my elegant scarlet shoes. I smiled. I was proud of those stilettos.

After a long moment, his head snapped up and his eyes met mine. There was still shock there, yes, but there was also a growing sense of awe.

Only expected, after all. I can be quite an impressive sight. And Bennet has never been as clean cut as he would like to appear.

My hand gently cupped his pale jaw, my skin dark and striking against his, the bright nails all the more vivid. Red, of course. Matching is always important.

He stared, taking in quick, shallow breaths. His tongue flicked out, a seemingly nervous gesture. Somehow I doubted it. Bennet was never less than composed, even when confronted with the most outré situations imaginable.

But the uncertainty, however illusory, was nonetheless more appealing than mere words could ever describe. It would take a great artist, pouring his heart out with each bold, vivid brushstroke, or a composer, full symphony at his beck and call, to even touch upon the complexity of the emotions I felt at that moment.

Chief amongst which was the desire to see how dirty that calm, painstakingly polite man could be. A step, and his body was pinned between mine and that wall. Our lips met in a smear of carefully applied lipstick.

What can I say? I look good in red.

He gasped, and I slid my tongue past his inviting lips. He tasted good, like subtle spices under the coffee he’d been drinking earlier. And he was responding much more than I would have imagined, his lips pushing against mine as our tongues twined. A swift press of my leg upwards confirmed it; the man was already hard.

Definitely not as wholesomely ‘all American’ as he tried to appear. I wondered how far I could go with him, how much he would take. My lips curled against his skin, and I pulled away.

Moments later, I was on my knees, fingers deftly sliding his belt free. No protests from him, merely slow, even breathing, too controlled to be natural. Good. His pants dropped to the floor, pooling around his ankles, and I leaned forward, looking up at him, lips parted in an alluring smile. I’ve been told I have beautiful lips, and that the merest trace of lipstick turns them into ‘cock sucking lips,’ as the man said. These were full out deep-throating lips, if I may judge. I slid a finger along his length. Tell me you want it, my eyes silently whispered. Beg for me.

He held out for a long, impressive time. But he couldn’t keep it up. Not with my light, teasing touches and the feel of my breath on his skin. “Please,” he gasped. My fingers tightened around him. Good, but not quite enough. I wanted to hear it from his mouth. In his voice. My eyes flashed. Please, what?

He let out a deep groan, biting his lip belatedly to try to keep it in. That one sound was almost worth everything. But his next words made my entire body burn for him. “I need… need you. Your mouth. Please…”

So filthy, Mr. Bennet. Does your wife know what you get up to? I smirked and took him in deep, fingers coming to rest on his pale hips. A choked moan of absolute pleasure met my ears as I sucked him hard, fast, desperate to hear more of that, to feel him shuddering beneath my hands, to taste the most intimate of his fluids.

And it didn’t take him long. I’m probably much more skilled with my tongue than his wife is. And the added tawdriness of it all is quite a boost to the sensation, I have to admit. I swallowed his warm seed with a soft whimper of desire. That was all I had wanted and more. But it wasn’t enough. I knew, with a sense deeper than instinct, that this man would go much, much farther.

I stood slowly, and looked into his dazed eyes, and then down his body. His shirt still neat, his tie not even out of place, then down more, to where his bare thighs were smeared with scarlet. At that moment, I believed him to be the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

And I had to have him.

I flipped him around to face the wall, then pressed up against him. The crisp linen of his shirt felt incredible against my skin. The scent of him invaded my nostrils, strong sweat and subtle spice, intoxicating and arousing. I ran my hand down his back, slowly and gently, then softly cupped his ass. I wanted this. I wanted him. I wanted him to want me.

He pressed his forehead to the cool wall, shudders running through his body. His hands rested on the plaster, nails attempting to find purchase. I leaned forward, needing to feel even more of him, and he groaned, flexing back against me.

A smile took my smeared lips. Yes. His body knew what it wanted, knew what to do. I need only supply the motivation—which I had in plenty. I spat on my hand: disgusting, but I had no wish to waste the time in finding a less messy lubricant. A moistened finger slid inside him, making him whimper and tense; I could tell he would need only a little encouragement to enjoy this to the fullest. And so I gave it to him, a simple twist of my finger to find that oh so special spot inside. He let out a gasp, nails scrabbling on the wall in a frantic search for support. I touched it again, one more time, before adding a second finger to the mix.

Bennet made the most delightful noises, I was discovering. A delicious concerto, my fingers plucking the strings that made such glorious music. I ached for him more with each subtly different groan and gasp. And while I had a plentitude of patience, I was certainly no saint.

I pulled away, pausing only to give my hand another coating of mucus, then slid my heated flesh out of my panties with a soft gasp of relief. A few glorious strokes slickened the organ, making it ready to sate those desperate whimpers from my partner. I pressed slowly, gently inside him, sucking in a sharp breath as flesh surrounded me so very tightly. It was agonizingly sublime. My hands gripped his hips firmly, keeping them right where I wanted them.

Bennet keened, struggling to push back against me, begging with all that he was for more. And I… I was inclined to give him all he wanted, and so much more. A long, fluid stroke had me buried deep inside him, deeper than I’m sure he could have imagined possible. He gasped sharply, shuddering violently. I gave another thrust, and another, each coaxing forth a groan of deep pleasure and need. It was headier than the finest wine, more alluring than the sleekest silk. He was mine, every inch of him responding to my touch. I used him for my pleasure, and he reveled in it. He was perfect in every sense of the word.

My motions grew rougher as my desire flared hotter. And Bennet merely moaned louder and faster and more desperate in response. In the end, I was taking him savagely, teeth and nails digging into his flesh. The man made me lose all control.

And I loved it fiercely.

He screamed as he came, muscles tightening all over his body—and around my aching length. That was all I needed to break the last threads of my control, to send me spiraling into explosions of bliss. I could not think, could not see, could not hear… could only exist in my raging fire of ecstasy. Several long minutes passed before I became aware of myself once more, leaning heavily against Bennet and panting roughly. He seemed even more drained than myself, supported only by the wall, and my weight pushing him against it. I slowly pulled back, catching him in my arms when he would have crumpled.

Leading him gently to the couch, I pressed him down, then stood there gazing at him. Any plan I had at the beginning of this escapade quite clearly left him remembering none of this, as I had the few other times he had discovered one of my many secrets, but… I simply could not do that. He was… far too grand a plaything. Instead, I placed a finger on his cheek, forcing him to meet my eyes. “You will tell no one of this,” I murmured, ignoring his start at the sound of my voice. “And you will return.”

“I… yes,” he gasped, unable to look away. Unable to disobey my direct command.

Mine. Mind, body, and soul.

A/N: Written for the beautiful Kathy. I asked her for a challenging prompt, and she came up with the impossible: Thompson actually being nice to Mohinder.

He slid into the booth at Denny’s and flashed his most charming grin at the waitress. “Thanks, darling. I’ll have an iced tea, sweet. You?” He raised an eyebrow at his companion.

Mohinder flashed him an exasperated look, but didn’t comment; he’d learned long ago that flirting with waitresses was one of Thompson’s unalienable rights. Along with cute checkout attendants of either sex, bartenders, and, pretty much, anyone else he damn well wanted to flirt with. “I’ll have water,” he said shortly, his accent clipped and precise, in stark contrast to his lover’s cocky drawl.

“Come on, live a little.” He rolled his eyes at the waitress—Tammy, her nametag said cheerfully—and shook his head with a mocking smile. “Get him one of those fruity things. Surprise us.” She scribbled on her pad and walked away. “What?” he said to Mohinder’s glare. “It fits.”

“Have I mentioned lately that you are a total ass?” The Indian gave him a long suffering look.

“Does fifteen minutes ago count?” He grinned and leaned back against the barely comfortable vinyl cushions. “Anyway, what do you want to eat? I thought I’d get us some nachos to start with. Good?”

“Fine.” He glanced over the menu, then back at Thompson. “Do they have a vegetarian option on that?”

“Shit. Fine, I’ll get the nachos, and you can pick out your own appetizer,” he offered generously. That was what tonight was for, after all.

“Are you going to eat the whole order?” Mohinder raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah, so what?” He looked down at the picture in the menu. “Saying I’m fat, kiddo?”

“It fits,” he spat back, slightly acidly.

“Guess I deserved that, brat. Sorry.” Right. He was trying not to be a big dick tonight. Well, not until after dinner. He smirked at that thought. “I’ll hit the gym double tomorrow. I fucking love their nachos. Main reason I ever come here.”

“Right.” Mohinder gazed around the restaurant with a faint air of distaste. “What else is good? That I can eat?”

It didn’t take long to get everything sorted out and their order placed. He pretended to listen to his lover talk about his latest project as he fingered the box in his pocket, shifting slightly uneasily. Maybe this was a bad idea. He’d just fuck it up, and ruin everything. Mohinder didn’t even have to know that there was a reason to this other than the damn nachos, like he’d said.

No. He’d promised himself he wasn’t going to let this one go. That he’d finally settle down—well, mostly, at least. He looked around to make sure no one was watching them, then pulled the box out, closing his fingers around it under the table. “Hey, kiddo?”

“Yes?” Mohinder looked up from where he’d been drawing an invisible diagram on the table.

“Happy, uh… just take this.” He shoved the box across the table.

“Happy what?” the man asked absently, as he opened it, then froze as he took in what was inside, a silver chain with a pendant shaped like a double helix. “You remembered?”

He tried to cover his embarrassment with a smug smile, but wasn’t sure he’d managed. “Maybe. What of it?”

“The word you were looking for,” Mohinder said firmly, “is ‘anniversary.’ Is that so hard to say?”

An actual update from Lir. Who's surprised?

Yeah, I know I dropped off the face of the internets for awhile, except for a few bits of RP. I've been dealing with limited computer time, and, well, I just didn't feel like talking. I've given up the idea that I'll ever catch up with my flist, so if anything interesting's happened since January, drop me a line and tell me. If you've written a fic you want me to read, slap me around and put it in front of my face.

In other news, someone's finally agreed to rent us a house. I get to move out of my dad's place. Thank all the gods dreamed up by the mind of man.

And Kathy and I are both in the running for a promotion. Only the one, and, actually, we're hoping she gets it. Then I can stay working part time and try to take internet classes. And, of course, 'work on my novel.' *Laughs*

Summary: Very little plot and a lot of sleaze. Thompson being his usual self.

Knuckles tapped lightly against the door. There was an opportunity laying behind it, one he’d kill himself if he let slip through his fingers. Without waiting for a response, he pushed the door open and stepped in confidently. The man was still there, of course—he’d left him only a few minutes ago.

A quickly veiled flash of annoyance crossed Nathan Petrelli’s features at the uninvited intrusion. “Did you forget something, Mr. Thompson?” he asked in his customary soft tones.

“You know, I rather think I did.” The smirk he habitually wore firmly in place, he strode into the room, pushing Petrelli back against his desk, effectively pinning him. Their lips met with bruising force. He always found it easier to take what he wanted; begging was a sign of weakness.

There was a moment of stillness, a moment of hesitation before hands came up and pushed at shoulders with just enough clout to pry his mouth from the other man’s. Nathan drew in a sharp breath. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he hissed between his teeth.

Those flashing eyes mere inches away were enough to confirm that this was exactly what he wanted from this evening. He smiled slowly. Petrelli was going to be a challenge, and he’d had far too few of those recently. “I should think it was fairly obvious,” he said drily.

“What’s obvious is that you’re leaving. Now.”

Petrelli’s body was hard against his, all tight muscles and rigid planes. And the only thing that was obvious was that nothing short of physical incapacitation could make him leave. “No, I really don’t think so.” He pushed back at the man’s hands, not quite enough to bridge the gap between them, but enough to show he meant business. He could feel the man’s breath on his lips, practically taste it on his tongue. It was too much. Fuck patience. His hands slid into Nathan’s hair, yanking his head forward. Just one more taste…

There was a brief, exhilarating instant of struggle before Petrelli’s lips parted the slightest bit—and of course he took advantage of the situation, tongue sinuously sliding inside. He could feel the man responding, back arching towards him, breath quickening into his mouth.

Then a hard shove sent him back two paces. He reeled, trying to regain his balance. It was refreshing, really, to have a chance to face off against someone so… set in his purpose. He approached at a rush, forcing Petrelli’s arms to the sides and getting right up in there. He inserted his knee between the man’s legs, pressing gently upwards. His lips found his throat, and his fingers joined the assault, scraping down his arms.

Nathan writhed in his grasp, though whether he was attempting to escape or get closer Thompson couldn’t say. There was no denying, however, that his knee had found fertile ground.

“Get out of my office,” Petrelli spat acerbically, though with a small trace of breathlessness.

“And if I say no?” That was almost a growl. A disappointment, really. Nathan was making him lose a sliver of his hard-earned control. But then, he seemed to be having a similar effect. He let his teeth graze skin.

Petrelli’s only answer was an incomprehensible mutter as he brought his arms up in a feeble attempt to push him away, weakened more by his surprising choice to simultaneously press himself against his thigh. Thompson’s lips curled into a satisfied smirk. Promising. Very promising. He let his hand migrate lower to cup that delightful bulge in the man’s slacks.

A low groan escaped Nathan’s lips. “Let go of me. Get the fuck off of me,” he said around harsh pants.

“Oh, I couldn’t, Nathan,” he purred. “Not while you’re enjoying it so much.” His hand moved, stroking through the expensive material.

Fingers closed convulsively around his tie, pulling him closer and threatening his air supply in one quick move. A soft laugh bubbled up. “What are you trying to do, Petrelli?” he murmured.

The grip tightened briefly, then released him. “Fuck you,” the younger man said, closing his eyes, a stubborn set to his jaw.

“Now, that’s an interesting idea,” he chuckled, “but I think I have other plans.” He pushed Petrelli back ‘til he was leaning precariously over his desk in a way that was probably hell on his spine.

Nathan’s palms hit the desk behind him, bracing him—not resignedly; no, the man was trying to wriggle out from under him. Now, that was less than ideal. Thompson pressed his advantage while he still could, hands gripping the man’s legs and tipping him even more.

Anger flared in the other pair of eyes, hot and unrestrained. Hands fisted in his hair, hands that were no longer holding the man up, he noticed absently. Before he could act on that, however, the hands yanked him down, crushing his lips ruthlessly against Petrelli’s.

Disquieting, really, that sudden change of heart on Petrelli’s part. But far too hot to ignore, even if it was possibly a trap. He kissed him back, plundering his mouth with more force than an entire invading Mongol horde. That much spirit was rare, and God, how he longed to break it. He didn’t have that luxury; Nathan was too valuable to their cause—was their cause. That spirit was what would pull the world together after the coming apocalypse. He let out a choked groan into the man’s mouth, shifting his hips to grind against him. He could still have his fun, at least.

And lord, what fun it was going to be.

Nathan’s back was flat against the hard surface of his desk. Thompson gripped the far edge, hands to either side of the man’s shoulders. A gasp was startled from him as Nathan’s teeth caught his lower lip.

The room seemed full of a feverish heat, possibly radiating off of them, however external the source felt. Hell was actually a good analogy, as clichéd as it was: the briefest taste of what he wanted and could never truly have. He banished his musings; introspection like that was for lesser men, those without Nathan Petrelli writhing beneath them. Thompson shifted his weight to one arm, sliding the other between them to work loose Petrelli’s belt.

Moaning, the man bucked against his hand, his whole being silently begging. At least, that was how Thompson interpreted it, and Nathan wasn’t doing much to disabuse him of that opinion. He unzipped his fly in one smooth motion. It didn’t take him long to find the treasure he sought, and his fingers slid along the man’s hard cock, teasingly light. Each moan he coaxed from him went straight to his own groin. He couldn’t keep this up much longer. A few more strokes, then he stood back to yank Petrelli’s slacks down and off.

Petrelli propped himself up and gazed at him, his expression unreadable. “Why are you doing this?” he said softly.

He quirked a small smile. “Why not?” A hand firmly set in the center of the man’s chest, he pushed him back down. When he was relatively certain Petrelli wasn’t going to move again, he pulled his attention away long enough to deal with his own zipper and take himself firmly in hand. There was no answer. Nathan Petrelli had rounded his desk and was flipping through a sheaf of papers, seemingly engrossed in skimming its contents. He watched him for a long, silent moment. He had to hand it to the man; that look of cool detachment was almost Oscar-worthy. And he wasn’t one to spoil something like that.

Well, not quite. He stopped on the threshold, looking back over his shoulder. “Consider that my campaign contribution,” he tossed back, then he stepped out, letting the door click shut behind him.

First: Sweeny Todd = WIN. The general synopsis is that Johnny Depp wants to kill Snape and Wormtongue, and since he can't, Bellatrix Lestrange helps him make half the people of London into meat pies. My kind of movie.

Second: Dune is a very slow read starting out. Didn't expect that. But I'm sure once something actually happens it'll be a good book.

Summary: Claude has a bad day out in the woods.
AN: Written for the brave_new_slash Fic Exchange for cerebel. Way past the deadline. Sorry about that. “Changing rocks” belongs to Dragon*Con TV and is used because I have a weird sense of humor. And thanks to Veet for actually coming up with most of the plot for this.

“Where did it say in my contract that I do… this?” Claude pulled his coat tighter around him, scowling at the surrounding pine woods.

“I think the question is: did it actually say that you didn’t?” Bennet was going over his equipment, and being, as always, far too reasonable.

Claude shot him a glare. “Of course not, rookie. Else I wouldn’t be here.” He turned his burning eyes on the far too extensive scenery. He did not do ‘The Great Outdoors.’ Never bloody had. They should have known better than to send him and the new kid out after a forest ranger.

You’d have thought that they’d’ve remembered the last time they sent him on this kind of thing. It had been a mess. And Haram had actually been decent with regards to nature. He kicked a rock out of his path, grumbling under his breath.

“Calm down, Claude. It can’t possibly be as bad as you make out.” He checked his watch, then scanned the surrounding wilderness. “His patrol should bring him here within the next hour.”

He didn’t dignify that with a comment. Can’t be that bad? Just wait and see, pup. Just wait and see. He looked up at the trees, slightly sinister to his eyes. “You ready for this, rookie?”

Bennet merely tapped his tazer with a raised eyebrow, as if to say ‘Aren’t I always?’ Damned practically robotic little… Claude forced himself to take a deep breath. The kid didn’t deserve him taking out his edginess on him. Yet, at least.

“Alright. So, who’s the bloke we’re after, again?” Talking was good. Might keep the ravening wolves away. Or at least the bloody squirrels.

The other man shot him a look, only a hint of exasperation showing in the depths of his unflappable exterior. “Devin Phillip McKenzie, D.O.B. April sixteenth, 1963,” he recited drily. “Graduated from the University of Michigan three years ago with a B.A. in English. Had a mental breakdown a year ago, vanished, then resurfaced months later working for a park service several states away.” He gestured, indicating their surroundings. Claude scowled as he continued, unperturbed. “When questioned, members of his Dungeons and Dragons group claimed that ‘Harilan the Paladin’ had never shown any previous sign of instability.”

“Now hold on a minute, mate,” Claude interjected, “you made that last bit up.” He’d read the file—well, most of it—well, skimmed most of it—and he’d seen no mention of paladins.

“Why would I?” Bennet answered with infuriating blandness. He was probably laughing at him, the bastard.

“Because you’re a right arse and think I didn’t read the file.”

“If you say so.” He smirked slightly. “I believe, personally, that his friends should have been less surprised. Anyone choosing to play a paladin is obviously a bit off.”

Claude wasn’t about to rise to that bait again. “What else?”

“His ability is listed as ‘potential mineral manipulation.’”

“Which means they don’t really know shite,” he sighed. Great. Out to get a ‘potential.’ His day was getting even better. At least in the woods, there wouldn’t be any innocents in danger.

“If you want to put it that way,” Bennet replied, unperturbed.

Claude just shook his head and leaned against a tree. Mineral manipulation. Really. What in god’s bloody name was that supposed to mean? The bloke could change rocks? Use cunning words to get the rocks fighting each other? Actually, if anyone could do that one, it would be Bennet.

And he was letting his thoughts get dangerously off topic. Focus. Do the job and get out of there. He couldn’t afford to be less than vigilant. Not out here, away from his natural urban environment.

And so of course it was in the midst of his distraction that the sound of rapidly approaching hoofbeats grew audible. He cursed silently to himself, caught the rookie’s eyes, then faded from sight. He re-checked his tranquilizer gun—still loaded. Good. This was on him, until they could get him off the horse.

He waited until the man rounded a bend in the path. Tall, broad shouldered, sitting easily on his horse. Not the typical geek-boy Bennet had led him to expect. Thanks for that, mate, he thought acerbically with a glare at the rock his partner had slipped behind.

Then it was time to act. The world narrowed to him and his target. Carefully taking aim… Now. He pulled the trigger, holding his breath. The horse stepped restlessly at the last minute, getting a dart in the neck for its pains. Bugger! Fuck, damn, all that bollocks. He quickly reloaded.

As he readied his second shot, there was a deafening crack! and the boulder concealing his partner split down the middle, collapsing as if in slow motion on the man behind.

McKenzie had managed to leap free of his falling horse, tumbling to the ground and rising to his feet, eyes locked on his one—visible—attacker. Who was no longer in any condition to do anything.

“Oi, you! Yeah, you, you fucking pansy arse-wipe!” When he turned, unerringly staring straight through where Claude was, he raised the gun, put on a manic grin, and let the light hit him again. Or however it fucking worked. Physics, who needed it?

Devin’s eyes just had time to widen in shock before the dart hit him dead on in the shoulder and he collapsed.

As soon as Claude was sure the drugs would take, he darted to the rock, roughly hauling it off of his partner. Fear and worry left a sour taste in his mouth. “Come on, rookie, talk to me,” he muttered, staring down at the man. He was bruised up pretty good, and that leg… That was probably broken. He hissed slightly. Bennet was not going to enjoy that. He placed a hand gently on his partner’s cheek. “Bennet. Hey, arsehole. Noah. Anything.”

He opened bleary eyes. “What… what happened?”

Claude let out a sigh of relief. “Your paladin threw a rock at you,” he said, not quite as sarcastically as he’d meant to.

“Funny,” he gasped out. “How… bad is it?”

“I’m gonna haveta set your leg, rookie. ‘S’not gonna be pretty.” Claude didn’t give him a chance to react to that, snapping his bone into place. The anguished scream was something he was going to take out, personally, on Devin McPaladin’s pansy skin.

Bennet had passed out from the pain by the time he finished getting a crude splint on the leg. Probably for the best, poor bastard.

He took a glance around the splintered boulder at their so called quarry. Still out. Well, he was only dragging one sorry sack of shit out of this wilderness, and it sure as hell wasn’t going to be that son of a bitch. He could stay and rot. Or get chewed on by bloody wolves, for all Claude cared. Hell, he might even shoot the wanker. Tell them he’d done it to protect Bennet.

No, let the bloke suffer. Wake up with a killer headache, no idea what they may have done to him… not knowing if they were coming back… And I am. Oh, am I ever coming back for you, boy. Claude considered giving him a kick, but that would involve walking over there. He sighed and slowly scooped up his limp partner, slinging him over his shoulder. He set his teeth. The man was a lot heavier than he looked.

And it was a long bloody walk back to where they’d left the car. “Dammit, rookie, you’re supposed t’be the one with the plan,” he whispered through clenched teeth. He just concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other. That, and not falling down or dropping Bennet. With a broken leg, he didn’t need that. That was why it took him much longer than it would normally to realize just where the hand steadying the man on his shoulder was resting. The nice, firm arse that he’d been trying not to stare at since the rookie’d been put in his care.

He stopped dead for a minute, closing his eyes. This is no time to lose that professional façade, he told himself forcefully. You’re not feelin’ up your unconscious partner. That’s just where your hand has to go for this. He had to admit, it felt nice, though.

No. That way lay madness. And really perverted gropings of knocked out rookies. No. If he was going to grope the rookie, he had to wait til he woke up. And he’d never let him then. So there, no groping. Keep your hands off. Well, just hold him. Don’t do anythin’ stupid, Claude.” He sighed and started walking again. Now he was far too conscious of the man’s body pressed against him. And under his hand.

And he’d thought the man couldn’t be more annoying unconscious. Though, in all fairness, none of that was Bennet’s fault. Too bad he didn’t feel like being fair.

After what seemed like hours, with several stops to carefully lower the man to the ground and rest, he finally reached the place they’d concealed the car. He stood, staring down into the shallow gulley that had seemed such a bloody bright idea when they were both able bodied and awake.

He sighed and gently set Bennet on the ground. Now, how in the hell was he going to do this? He figured he was tall enough to grab hold of the man while standing at the bottom. Maybe. He considered the steep ridge for another moment. Of course, if he wanted to be smart, he could climb down there and then drive the car around to where Bennet was.

See, rookie? You’re not the only one with a plan.

He slid down the nearly vertical slope, hands on the edge to slow his descent. He gave a last look at what he could see of his partner, lying limply above him, then ducked into the car. Before long he was carefully easing it back onto the road, then he floored the gas until he got back to where Bennet was. Still there. Good. He’d been worried; ranger boy might wake up any time now, and he wasn’t looking forward to the hunters becoming the hunted. Pursuit was a lot different on the wrong end.

He took a wary look around, then gathered Bennet up in his arms. The man was even more awkward to carry this way. The bastard was just too bloody tall. After a bit of effort, he managed to get his partner into the car, stretched across the rear seat.

He stood there, staring at him for a long moment. He didn’t like the gray cast to his skin.

Claude sighed and shut the door firmly before sliding into the car himself. He sat behind the wheel, then silently eased the car onto the trail and down, towards the real world. Out of the wilderness and back to his cities.

Twenty minutes later, they were still in the woods. Because Bennet had been the one driving on the way in, and Claude hadn’t seen any need to pay attention. Or, to put it more accurately, he’d been sulking. He scowled into the mirror as he tried to figure out how he’d gotten off the main path. Damn you, Noah, he thought savagely. ’Oh, it can’t be as bad as you claim.’ Who’s the one with the bloody broken leg now? If I’d had my way, we wouldn’t have been out here.

Then his conscience guiltily kicked in. And if you’d been bright enough to read the sodding file? Or actually paid attention to the plan? Or maybe just hadn’t missed? This isn’t his fault, you wanker. Stop tryin’ to make it seem like it is. His hands tightened on the steering wheel. He hadn’t gone and… and done whatever the bloke had done to the rock on the rookie. He hadn’t even told him to hide back there.

That was just an excuse. He’d been acting like a rebellious bleedin’ teenager, and that had gotten Bennet hurt. “I’m sorry, mate,” he whispered, staring straight ahead. “I fucked us up good and bloody proper.” He found what he hoped was the right path and started down it. “Bugger, Noah, I’m a sodding arse. You’re in bloody pain and all I’m worryin’ about is whose ruddy fault this was.” His hand came down in a firm slap to the wheel. “But believe me, I will find that piece of shite bastard and make him wish he’d never been born. Or I’d never been born. Either works, mate. But he’ll never pull that trick again.” He gave a savage grin. Transferring emotions into anger always worked well for him.

Well, he thought so, at any rate.

“No one touches a rookie under my watch,” he muttered, staring at the road ahead of him. He thought they were on the right track, now. He’d get Bennet back, and see how much of a muck-up he’d made of his leg.

And never, ever mention this incident ever again.
