Lab for Interdisciplinary Research on Archaeological Ceramics (LIRAC)

LIRAC is more than a lab – it’s a hub for interdisciplinary exploration.

Founded in 2004 by Dr. Kostalena Michelaki and now directed by Dr. Andy Roddick, LIRAC is a dynamic research space at McMaster University dedicated to the scientific and cultural study of archaeological ceramics.

Whether you’re analyzing ancient production techniques, building 3D models of artifacts, or collaborating with international museums, LIRAC provides the tools, mentorship, and community to support innovative research.

LIRAC is equipped with three specialized laboratory spaces, each designed to support a different aspect of ceramic analysis:

A microscopy lab for examining microstructures and residues, a clay work and materials analysis lab for experimental archaeology and compositional studies, and a photography and recording studio for high-resolution documentation of artifacts.

Together, these facilities support a wide range of research projects that explore the cultural, technological, and social dimensions of ceramic production across time and space.
