Metaphony in Substance Free Logical Phonology
Kyle Gorman, Charles Reiss
October 2025

We provide an overview of Substance-Free Logical Phonology (LP) and apply this model to a few case studies of synchronic metaphony and similar processes. We adopt Inkelas and colleagues' notion of Inalterability as Prespecification (IAP), implementing feature-filling rules with a unification operator. We show that the assumptions of LP allow us to reanalyze some cases of metaphony previously treated as morphophonological as occurring within the narrow phonology. We also generalise the IAP notion from rule targets to rule triggers.
