LGBT Characters and Why They're Important

Someone asked me through my other account why having a lesbian/gay character on television is so important. I didn’t take it as she was wondering why we need them, but I think she was generally interested in why I think we need them. I would go right into why it’s important for young people, but first off I want to compare.

I honestly think that having LGBT sort of characters on shows is in the same distinct category as why we should have more women that are bigger set. Not only do people watch these shows because they’re interesting or they find some sort of value with them, teens and young adults look upon these shows for some sort of guidance. No matter what you think these shows have an influence on teens and adults. They help them realize that what they are is okay, and maybe in the long run might actually help them learn to accept themselves.

Which brings me to the point of what LGBT characters on TV shows are so important. You look at the 80s or even the early 90s where gay characters were the ‘characters’ of the show, you’d have your sassy gay friend that gave the punch lines and then you’d get back to the ‘straight’ storyline. Flash forward to now. We have some amazing LGBT on television right now that are being taken honestly, and aren’t just there for the comedic gay comeback line. It’s important for teens to realize that being gay isn’t the end of the world and that you don’t have to look a certain way, or act a certain way to be gay. These teens who are struggling watch there favorite characters also struggling and realize that maybe everything will be okay, and things do get better.

LGBT characters aren’t on TV now to ‘turn’ your son/daughter gay as some people apparently think so. It’s quite the opposite, their on TV more prominently because they want to be able to tell your children who are struggling with this that, ‘it’s okay if you’re gay. it gets better and this is why.’

The stereotypes of gays are always going to be there, it’s just life, and people are always going to find something to bitch about, but most importantly is that the hate isn’t what is important, it’s the fact that these kids are finally feeling the power to come out and be proud of who they are, instead of spending years in the closet horrified and scared of who they really are.

She had finally found the right one. She wanted a song that would somehow express her feelings for Santana - but she didn’t want to pick the Melissa Etheridge one. That would just be to out there. She asked her mom, and she had helped her a bit - but she didn’t know why. Brittany had asked Puck for help, out of every one he was one of the only one’s the knew before they did. I mean they had hooked up a few times, but not with him necessarily. He was always kind of the third wheel.

There Brittany was in front of the full Glee Club in the choir room. Santana didn’t know she was getting up there, they hadn’t really spoken like they use to. Brittany sang. She sang from the only thing that had never called her dumb, or called her stupid. Her heart. She closed her eyes, singing from her soul, singing, not to the Glee Club, but to Santana, when she opened her eyes about half way through the song she noticed Santana was tearing up slightly, not visible. Santana wouldn’t do that.

They finished. Brittany gave a small smile to everyone as Mr. Shue came over and patted her on the back congratulating her on a great song choice. However, before he could continue, and before Brittany started to make her way back to her seat, Santana stood up.

‘Is that how you really feel?’ Santana said looking straight at Brittany. Brittany looked at her and shook her head. ‘No. That’s not how I really feel.’

Santana looked down, upset and almost showing the signs of crying. Brittany walked up to her and smiled. ‘This is how I really feel.’ Brittany cupped her hands on Santana’s face and kissed her. She almost assumed that Santana would push her off, she knew it was in public but instead Santana followed suit and kissed her back.
[posted on my tumblr]
