The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey is now open in Oklahoma City.

Lighthouse Immersive partnered with the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City to create The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey, a large-scale projection-mapped experience that brings the history and culture of the American West to life.

The installation transforms gallery space into a fully immersive, 360-degree environment where sweeping Western landscapes, cinematic sound, and historic storytelling surround the audience. Through cutting-edge projection technology and narrative design, the experience invites guests to step inside the evolving story of the cowboy – from the early days of cattle drives to the modern West.

The project represents a new chapter in how museums use immersive technology to deepen engagement with history and cultural storytelling.

Reimagining Western Storytelling

For more than 70 years, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum has preserved and interpreted the art, history, and cultures of the American West. With The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey, the museum expands that mission by introducing a new format for historical storytelling – one that surrounds visitors with moving imagery, sound, and narrative.

The experience places audiences inside the landscapes and moments that shaped the cowboy legacy. Visitors travel across vast plains and rugged frontiers, witness the movement of cattle drives, and see the emergence of rodeo culture and Western mythology.

Rather than observing artifacts from a distance, guests stand at the center of the story.

A Cinematic 360° Experience

Developed by Lighthouse Immersive, the installation uses large-scale projection mapping and spatial storytelling to transform the gallery into a cinematic environment.

The experience unfolds across several narrative chapters that explore the evolution of the cowboy and the American West. Guided in part by the real journal of 19th-century cowboy Jack Bailey and narrated by Tom Selleck, the story moves from the earliest frontier landscapes through the rise of ranching culture and into the modern West.

Throughout the journey, visitors encounter:

  • Vast Western landscapes stretching from the Great Plains to the Pacific
  • The thunder and movement of historic cattle drives
  • The rise of rodeo culture and ranch life
  • The transformation of the cowboy into an American cultural icon through Wild West shows and Hollywood
  • The modern West, featuring ranchers, cowboys, cowgirls, and rodeo athletes, continues the tradition today

At the conclusion of the experience, guests can explore an interactive digital version of Jack Bailey’s journal, offering a firsthand historical perspective from a working cowboy more than 150 years ago.

A Collaboration Between Museum and Immersive Storytelling Studio

The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey builds on an ongoing partnership between Lighthouse Immersive and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The collaboration began with the launch of the museum’s “Find Your West” immersive experience in 2024, which introduced projection-based storytelling into the museum environment.

For Lighthouse Immersive, the project represents an opportunity to apply large-format immersive techniques – developed through globally recognized productions such as Immersive Van Gogh and Immersive Disney Animation – to historically grounded museum storytelling.

By combining cinematic design with authentic historical research, the experience bridges two worlds: immersive art and museum interpretation.

A New Model for Museum Experiences

As museums continue to explore new ways to engage audiences, immersive technology is becoming an increasingly powerful tool for storytelling. The partnership between Lighthouse Immersive and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum demonstrates how projection-based environments can complement traditional exhibitions while expanding how visitors connect with history.

Through large-scale visuals, spatial sound, and narrative design, The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey transforms museum storytelling into an experience that is both educational and emotionally resonant.

For audiences visiting Oklahoma City, it offers a new way to experience the enduring legacy of the American West.
