Learning Communities

For first year Agriculture and Bioresources (AgBio) and Kinesiology (Kin) students

The Learning Community sign-up system will open on May 4.

Please note: the course combination and schedule offerings under each college below are from fall 2025. We will post the 2026 fall offerings by May 4.

What are Learning Communities

Each AgBio and Kin Learning Community (LC) is a small group of students who are invested in their academic success and who share a common course schedule, including a designated LC hour facilitated by experienced student mentors (Peer Mentors). Each LC meets weekly during the fall term of your first year of university and provides you with early advantages in adjusting to university learning and registering for your classes.

When you sign up for an LC, you will gain early registration and guaranteed seats in a pre-determined schedule of key courses needed for your degree. This pre-determined schedule will ensure you share classes with your fellow LC students and will make your registration in fall term simpler. You can then choose 1-3 more courses (depending on your chosen LC and desired course load) to add to your schedule.

During the fall term, you will spend 50 minutes each week together (LC hour), developing your approach to learning and university life. You can then apply what you learn from each LC hour to your studies, setting yourself up for success in your academic career!

In your weekly Learning Community hour you will

  • connect with students in your college
  • benefit from the mentorship and support of successful, senior students (i.e. Peer Mentors)
  • adapt to university expectations and campus life
  • develop the skills to succeed, such as: time management, group study, and prepping for university exams

Your Peer Mentors are there to

  • guide your weekly one-hour Learning Community session
  • mentor you as you develop your learning skills
  • provide a current student's perspective on university experiences
  • share resources to assist you with academic growth
Please note: Your weekly Learning Community hour is not a study session and Peer Mentors are not subject tutors.
