About the program
Interested in helping in the community while also developing new knowledge and skills?
Consider participating in this community service-learning partnership between the University Library and Foundations Learning & Skills Saskatchewan. You’ll provide one-on-one literacy support to elementary school children as a Reading Guide in Foundations Learning’s Spark program and learn from local community leaders in reflective sessions guided by University Library staff.
Along with gaining a rich service experience, you will explore aspects of literacy, information privilege, and community. As an active participant, you can potentially receive a designation on your co-curricular record upon completion of the program.
By participating in this program, you will:
- Partake in a meaningful community service-learning experience.
- Gain a deeper understanding of literacy and privilege, particularly information privilege.
- Examine your place/positionality within the university and your broader community.
- Connect with other engaged students and community members.
Requirements
- Complete a criminal record and vulnerable sector check (fee waived when accompanied by a letter from Foundations Learning).
- Watch the 1-hour long Foundations Learning orientation video.
- Participate in 3 hours of in-person Reading Guide Training from Foundations Learning.
- Meet with elementary school students to provide 30 minutes of tutoring, twice a week for 8 weeks.
