Travelling USask students, faculty, and staff

Borrowing from Canadian university libraries

Through our Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL) membership, the USask Library is part of the Canadian Academic Libraries Resource Sharing Agreement (CAL-RSA) which ensures that faculty, staff, and students from participating Canadian universities are provided in-person access to the library collections of all other participating universities.

  • Borrowing privileges and services vary among libraries. You are expected to follow the rules of your host library, including those regarding loan periods and fines.
  • Present your USask campus ID card as proof as eligibility for borrowing privileges at your host library.
    • At their discretion, other libraries may contact us to confirm that you are in good standing at the USask Library (i.e. account not expired, no outstanding fines).

Borrowing from university libraries in the United States

Through our association with Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), reciprocal borrowing privileges are extended to USask faculty at participating research libraries across North America. Privileges vary - check with the institution that you plan to use before you leave.

Before leaving USask

  • Visit a Library Services desk in person, or send an email to library.services@usask.ca
  • Members in good standing will be issued an OCLC card valid to the end of the academic year (Aug 31).

At the library you are visiting

  • Go to the check-out desk and present your OCLC card.

Borrowing from the USask Library

  • All visiting reciprocal borrowers must come to a Library Services desk in person and present appropriate identification.
    • In most cases, this means a valid insititutional ID card from your home university. We will also need to see a current piece of photo ID which includes your current mailing address so that we can create your USask library account.
  • Before being granted borrowing privileges at USask, we may contact your home library to ensure that you are in good standing (account not expired, no fines).

Library notices

Library notices and due date reminders are sent to the primary email address identified in My Profile. It is your responsibility to keep your contact information up to date to ensure you receive these important notices.

Learn how to keep your email current with the USask Library.

Visiting reciprocal borrowers are able to:

  • Borrow up to 50 regular loan items for 30 days. Standard loan periods and fines apply.
  • Renew borrowed items twice by logging into your Library Account.
  • Request interlibrary loans (free of charge).
  • No access to items on course reserve.
  • Many USask Library electronic resources are accessible in the library for all "walk-in" users, including reciprocal borrowers. You can access these resources while on campus and using the USask network on alumni and public library computers or your personal device. Generally, you will have online access to electronic resources through your home institution's subscriptions.

Saskatchewan Reciprocal Borrowing Program

The libraries at the University of Saskatchewan (USask), University of Regina (U of R) and Saskatchewan Polytechnic have a reciprocal borrowing program for current faculty, staff, and students which allows:

  • in-person borrowing of library resources at any participating library
  • the ability to return borrowed items to any participating library

To participate in this program, you must be in good standing at your home institution library (have a valid library account and no outstanding charges or overdue items). Our library staff may contact your home institution for confirmation. Faculty, staff, and students at other Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions are also eligible if they have library borrowing privileges under pre-existing or future agreements with either the U of R, USask, or Sask Polytech.
