Brackett Library commits to being a hub for scholarship and research by guiding patrons from all academic levels and disciplines through all phases of information research. We will excel in providing vibrant and diverse resources and tools as well as an academic community space that will meet the needs of students and faculty. The library will expand the archive collection as we preserve the rich heritage of the university as a liberal arts and Christian institution. As part of the Harding community of mission, we will make the character and example of Jesus Christ the standards that will guide us as we serve our patrons.
Brackett Library is celebrating Harding’s centennial year with several exhibits. The Clifton L.Ganus Jr. Distinguished Chair of History and Political Science funded a phone booth exhibit where one booth provided a space for alumni to record memories. In contrast, the other booth was a listening station where others could hear the recordings. The library was also able to host a panel exhibit that displayed several events that occurred in 1924. Brenda Breezeel created an interactive kiosk station where patrons can explore
Harding’s history. Hannah Wood created a display, The History of Harding’s Libraries, which can be seen in the stairwell to the second floor. All of the librarians also participated in a presentation in February based on this display as part of the Centennial Colloquium for the Liberal Arts.
Harding announced that the Harding School of Theology (HST) would close their campus and move to Searcy. A HST Library transition team was formed and in September, the work began and continues as we make plans to move the collection. With the collection being almost the same size as the Brackett collection, finding a large space that could bear the weight of the books became a challenge. The HST library holding records were migrated into the Brackett Library system in May and the electronic resources were added by June as we prepared for HST classes to begin in Searcy in August.
Whitney Hammes, the Instruction and Outreach Librarian, collaborated in the fall with the First Year Experience (FYE) team. She helped create an online escape room activity and orientation sessions with several interactive stations throughout the library. In October, Amy McGohan, the E-Resources Librarian, received the Spurrier Award from the Arkansas Library Association (ArLA), acknowledging her work as an academic librarian along with the contributions she has made to ArLA.
The library also stayed busy in the spring with several events. February brought the Gather 2 Give campaign where generous donors gave over $13,000. In March, the library hosted the first annual ScholarSip in collaboration with the Provost’s Office. This event recognized faculty who had created or published works in 2023 with a reception in Cone Chapel. April started with the total eclipse and the library closing for a few hours as we enjoyed this magnificent event. The summer has stayed busy as we plan for the HST classes to start, working with the incoming freshmen and Founder’s Day activities all packed into the first few weeks of Fall 2024.
