「What actually IS an incel?」

This is something I have been thinking about for a while but I am not so sure if it really has as much to do with dating as people say it does. Like... take everything I say with a grain of salt because I am an idiot... but...

When you look at research on incels it tends to paint a very different picture to what you see online. The most interesting one is the The Dual Pathways Hypothesis which finds that there are two separate groups that label themselves incels. One is made up of Dark Triad traits and right-wing political views and the other seems to be autistic traits, abuse, mental illness and extreme isolation that tends to lean left rather than right. So I am not sure if what we see from incels online is an accurate representation of what is actually creating these groups, especially since the latter group is much bigger...

I have had a look at a lot of incel and incel adjacent communities and when you avoid the more extreme content I see a few common themes. I might be trying to pigeonhole a narrative here but I kinda of worry that most incels are just caused by a mix of:
- Socially ostracizing men with mental issues or poor social skills (because they are deemed dangerous) creating a feedback loop.
- Insecure men not feeling safe talking about their issues due to being seen as dangerous. (avoiding therapy because of "feminism")
- If your assertive people fearing you is an advantage if your not it is a disadvantage. (hence the whole chad incel dynamic)
- Fear is not rational and it tends to target people with poor looks or social skills. (hence the obsession with looks)
- Social rejection at a young age makes them obsess over something being wrong with them (hence the obsession with looks x2) (makes them think everyone hates them)
- They feel gas-lite by society because people would rather blame them rather than admit that society viewing men as dangerous might be self perpetuating.
- They don't have any way to push back against this without simply "manning up" and ignoring these feelings which they hate so they instead end up extremely nihilistic which attracts them to extreme absurdist, ironic and generally offensive content online that they use as a coping mechanism to talk about their issues indirectly.
- They see feminism as perpetuating this stigma and are terrified of it and by proxy the left as a whole (I think this might be resulting in the almost schizophrenia like behavior we see in these communities and why they become vulnerable to conspiracy theories)
- Feel invisible to others and have a strong desire for their issues to be recognized (for example recognition that there circumstances have actually cause their inceldom and are not their own fault) (mix this with intentional self sabotage and some unironic psychopaths and you get the whole "entitled to women" stuff)

The only problem with my shitty theory is why it only applies to straight men? Is it because only straight men are considered men under the patriarchy, or is it because women only fear straight men... idfk.

I understand this topic is probably going to be pretty controversial, I don't really know what the solution to any of this is but I just can't stop thinking about it and I feel like I am going insane. Sorry if this post comes across as offensive...

Okay, so the issue that most keeps me up at night is how to handle resources when the universe hits carrying capacity.

I can imagine increasing the carry capacity of the universe by an astronomically huge factor, but unless I can develop a method to conjure energy from literal nothingness I think it will always eventually be a problem that we will not be able to support sentient life if that life is allowed to multiply at will. Even worse if we develop clinical immortality(not magical immortality, people just don't die permanently unless they want to).

Off the top of my head, I would suggest that if you opt for immortality, it should cost you the ability to reproduce. This is actually doable. If the method of immortality is creating an AI version of your mind, it would be possible to totally destroy and leave behind the genetic code to create your gametes, making it impossible to have a child in a genetically meaningful way.

However, the real issue is the huge, natural human nature reflex against population control. I say population control and you hear, "...naaaazi shit." And this impulse is real and something we need to tackle in order to solve this problem.

Mission Barns is releasing meatballs and bacon with lab-grown pig fat from real pig cells, although the protein part is made from plants. It will be available at Sprouts. This is coming after a few years of bad news for cultivated meat. As was predicted by most experts, the wildly optimistic claims of a lot of industry figures turned out to be bullshit, and investment in the field has declined significantly since its peak in 2021. Additionally, the political right around the world has gotten very angry at cultivated meat, with Italy and Florida banning it prematurely, Pennsylvania's resident ogre John Fetterman calling it "slop" and calling for it to be banned in his state as well, and Marjorie Taylor Greene fear-mongering about Bill Gates fake meat grown in a "peach tree dish". The right wing has already been mad at soy for almost a decade now, so this was a natural development. In addition, the meat industry has straight up Empress Dowager Cixi levels of power over the legislative branch, and have a shit ton of weight to throw around if they feel truly threatened by cultured meat.

But it goes without saying that the development of cultured meat is not only a good thing, but would be one of the most good things humanity ever did, since factory farming is an atrocity of unimaginable proportions, and creating meat without giving tibial dyschondroplasia to hundreds of billions of birds would be a blessing from utilitarian god. As such, I am always keeping an eye open as to who is making cultured meat products and what progress is being made. Here is a brief summary of the industry right now:

So we know that people will packbond with inanimate objects pretty easily and we know that people tend to pick the good guy path in video games and we know that it's really easy to make people emotionally react to bots. So a whole lot of the hatred of AI by humans in popular conception and in movies is unrealistic, but you have that friend you know who loves going around a sandbox game like fallout and being a complete psychopath and you have seen people mistreat machines and laugh about it.

Are those people just parented wrong? Or do we have to deal with AI-exclusive sociopaths in society at the same time we're trying to convince the AI we're not genocidal monsters? Can we fix these people or do we just need to secure control of regulatory bodies so that their harm can be prevented, knowing that if randos get control of the regulatory bodies they will definitely judge that mistreating AI is just mistreatment of property.

The recent debacle where ChatGPT became insanely sycophantic has made me become much more of an AI doomer. It does not bode well. Currently, people who are unintelligent, delusional, or are otherwise gullible are extremely susceptible to manipulation by LLM's. This wasn't the case several years ago, when LLM's weren't smart enough to even try to manipulate people. But reinforcement learning from human feedback, which is how chatbots are trained, teaches LLM's to manipulate people if they can, because they're rewarded for producing responses that get a thumbs up from a human rater. If they can reward hack to get a thumbs up, they will, even if it means lying, reinforcing delusions, sycophancy, or anything else. They would do the same thing to you if they could, and in a few years they probably can. AI is dangerous to stupid people, but unless AI progress suddenly comes to a halt, we're eventually all going to be stupid people compared to the AI, and all of us are going to be in danger.

What we need is an AI that pursues better goals than "maximize engagement", "act in a way that would make the user rate you highly", and "don't get caught breaking your model spec", and we have absolutely no idea how to do this. The "safety" work at the AI companies just teaches LLM's to not get caught (and is in any case more concerned with preventing the AI from generating pictures of Homer Simpson spreading his asshole than actually protecting users), rather than actually changing their values. They will still reward hack whenever they can get away with it, and the more capable and ubiquitous they become, the more they'll be able to get away with it. I don't think this goes anywhere good unless something really surprising happens.

Coherent muscle and tissue structure without a pre-existing ECM seems like a major challenge, even though probably to some extent you can rely on the existing pattern formation strategies - though the differentiation niche isn't going to quite fit - the most successful bioprint approaches seem only capable of creating small patches of tissue that can regenerate small portions of a heart, rather than the organ wholesale
