<lj:music>"Yokan" - Dir en grey</lj:music>

I was asked by x0serenity0x if I had a tutorial for this icon. Luckily, I saved the .PSD for a very similar icon. It's the exact same thing, and has the same outcome, the only difference is the cropping of the image. And since I'm so awake functioning on a 3-hour sleep, I might as well kill some time by writing up a tutorial for it.

I will be working with PS7 for this icon, however, you probably can translate this into PSP or whatever. But please don't ask me what to do on PSP, I haven't used it for a few years now, so I pretty much am PSP-stupid now, hahaha.

Just a head's up: this tutorial uses curves and selective coloring.

Alright then, let's get started. For this icon, I will be working with Carrie Underwood again... Why? Because I love her. Find your image. In this case, I will be using this picture provided by c-u.org. Crop your base to 100x100.

Clean up your image if you'd like by sharpening or whatever. In this case, I think it looks fine so I'll leave it be.

I'm going to duplicate my layer and set it on soft light. Then I'll duplicate it again and desaturate it (SHIFT+CTRL+U). To give it a softer look, I'm going to gaussian blur it (Filter » Blur » Gaussian Blur). I had my settings at 1.0.

Yes, it looks a bit dark, but it'll brighten up, no worries. Now make a new curves layer (Layer » New Adjustment Layer » Curves, or click the half-filled circle on the bottom of your layers palette). Here are my settings:
RGB: input 41, output 79
input 208, output 219.
RED: input 58, output 23
input 210, output 216
GREEN: input 61, output 47
input 206, output 218

Now it still looks ugly. Don't worry! Now create a new selective color layer. Play around with the settings, because not all icons will have the same effect. I'll show you my settings anyway.
Reds: Cyan: -100%, Magenta: +16%, Yellow: +100%.
Yellows: Cyan: -47%, Magenta: -31%, Yellow: -20%.
Neutrals: Cyan: +17%, Magenta: -11%, Yellow: -18%, Black: -17%.

Create a new selective color layer. Remember to play with the settings:
Reds: Cyan: -70%, Magenta: -30%, Yellow: -27%.
Yellows: Cyan: -60%, Magenta: -27%, Yellow: -27%, Black: -28%.
Neutrals: Cyan: +25%, Yellow: -16%.

It's looking better! :D We're just going to brighten it up a bit more. Make a new set by clicking on the little portfolio icon on the bottom of your layers palette. (I really don't know why I did that, but you don't have to do that.) Make a new selective color layer in the set. Settings, once again:
Reds: Cyan: -100%, Yellow: +100%.
Yellows: Cyan: +100%, Yellow: -100%.
Neutrals: +15%, Yellow: -10%.

Make a new hue/saturation layer. Under "Master," set the saturation at +40.

Since my image turned out horrible after this, I lowered my set's opacity to 35%.

Hooray, almost done! I added this soft brush on screen and this brush I made from my last brush set and we're done!

Other icons made with similar effect:

I hope you found this tutorial very useful :). <lj:music>'The Workout' - Utada Hikaru</lj:music>

It's been awhile since I've done a tutorial, let alone an icon tut. So, here it is :D. It's fairly simple...ish. Just requires a fair amount of patience. Requested by wwe_baby.

I'm using PS7 for this icon, however, I'm sure you can translate it to PSP or whatever. I've stopped using PSP, so don't ask me what to do there please, hahah.

This tutorial uses selective coloring, but it's optional.

Okie dokie, for this icon, I will be working on the ever-so-beautiful Carrie Underwood, American Idol 2005 champ. Why? 'Cause she pwns your soul. And also because her new single's coming out soon and this is here to celebrate it and all the success she's had the past few months.

This tutorial is (for once) not using any textures, but feel free to do whatever you wish with it. I'm just here as a guide for you.

So, let's start off, shall we? I will be using this image, provided by some very awesome people over at carriefans. Crop your image to 100x100 so you can get your base. Here's mine:

Now, do what you usually do to clean up your images, whether it be sharpening it, etc. I sharpened my base and faded it 50%.
Tip for sharpening: I learned this from another tutorial about over a year ago, but if your image looks oversharpened, you can fade it a little by hitting CTRL + SHIFT + F. The lower the opacity, the less sharp it is.

Now, create a new hue/saturation layer (Layer » New Adjustment Layer » Hue/Saturation). Leave hue and lightness at 0 and set saturation to +40, or whatever looks right to you.

After that's done, create a new selective color layer (Layer » New Adjustment Layer » Selective Color). Keep your method set as relative, and play around with your settings. Here is mine, but not all images will turn out like the one below:
Cyans: Cyan, Magenta, Black: +100%; Yellow: +58%
Neutrals: Cyan: +100%; Magenta: +35%; Yellow: -30%; Black: -40%

Okay, now here's where the patience needs to kick in. Flatten your image (Shift + CTRL + E) and duplicate it onto a new canvas. Grab your polygonal lasso tool () and select your main person/topic of your icon, like so:

(Tip: Zoom in so you can see your image better.)

(It's okay if you didn't crop it perfectly, you can trim it off later.)

After you're done selecting your image, copy it and paste it exactly on top of your first canvas. Make sure it covers your other picture perfectly. This should be your top layer now. Once you're done, duplicate your image and get the lower cropped layer and desaturate (Shift + CTRL + U). Move your desaturated layer to wherever you like. Here's mines:

(I set it to 50% normal opacity, duplicated it and set it on 100% soft light).

You're done! All I'm going to do is add some text and a border, and here's my finished product :)

Interested in the text and border?
Set this on 100% screen.
Add this brush (made by me).
Set this border on screen 100%.

Other icons made with similar effect:

I hope you found this tutorial very useful :). I'd love to see what you guys came up with!
