“Do we just run out of dreams/When all our dreams come true?”

One of those films that means a little differently as I grow older and watch it with different lenses. (This is my first time watching it without all of the cuts Weinstein made when it came to America originally. Thank god we finally get the whole thing.)

At this point it’s just stream of consciousness, gathering the thoughts I had while watching this in the theater alone with…

Babette's Feast
★★★★ Liked Watched

When Babette walked through town with her cape on carrying a cage full of quails. That’s mother.

(After this point this was a stream of consciousness writing I did while watching the film. Small TW for eating/eating disorder)

The film did make me think of growing up in Connersville, but also with a mother whose ideas of cuisine were quite limited, especially when you consider our more impoverished periods. I made a pasta dish with fennel and chickpeas yesterday which…

Words and Music
★★ Watched

The music biopic has always been a terrible genre, but especially in Hays code era Hollywood. Lorenz Hart would have drank himself to death all over again if he watched this. Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni… one of the all time best pairings in cinema history. Why 👏 don’t 👏 we 👏 talk 👏 about 👏 them 👏 MORE??

It’s kind of crazy there’s not a bunch of tales about them having affairs off set. Not to say it NEVER happened, but definitely not enough for it to be part of their lore. Which, if nothing else, that proves their chemistry and acting prowess across their shared filmography.

Reasons why Letterboxd should take this film more seriously:

- Ron Howard's best film. Can you think of something better? I can't.
- One of three Oscar noms Jim Carrey was robbed of.
- I'm sorry but the script is funny as hell and makes this trainwreck so pleasing.
- Utter madness on the screen.
- ORIGINAL SONG "WHERE ARE YOU CHRISTMAS" SANG BY THE TALENTED FAITH HILL (and co written by the Queen of Christmas herself, Mariah Carey)
