Of COURSE this was made by the guy who makes all the video game movies.
When we started out watching this, I was telling @Cattywampus2020 that I was surprised that we were able to make out what was happening on screen and that there was characters with wants and needs and stuff. Luckily, by the third reel - it was a very dim, strobing, slo-mo clusterfuck with who-knows-what taking place.
So. Alien Resurrection is not good. But I think it's well done for what it is. I feel like Jean Pierre-Jeunet was somehow able to make this balance between so many wildly different things that this meant to be.
Did we need an undead Ripley or a weird baby alien? No ... but if we were going to get them - I'm glad we got them this way.
Not entirely sure what this was all about but dang these guys got style. It was beautiful, grotesque, good cinematography, great music. Some scenes were absolutely stand out, and builds to an incredible finale. I think if you’re trying to watch it for a thematic or narrative read and you’re like me, you may find it a little too dreamlike to be entirely satisfying.
A lot to enjoy here, especially from the cosmic horror and the gloopy practical effects standpoint. I thought the beginning was actually quite strong with the investigation part, and I appreciate that the rules of this place are never really over-explained.
That said, its not perfect by any stretch. It’s cinematography choices don’t serve the story and are somewhat distracting, there’s some mid CG that could have been avoided, and the romantic subplot is unnecessary and detracts from the overall…
