In the early 2000s, the Nam June Paik Estate worked with Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) to migrate and transcode the original 3/4" U-Matic tape to YUV 10-bit video and PCM 16-bit audio codecs. As magnetic tape only has approximately a 20-year shelf life, this was a conservation necessity. I know this because I'm working directly on a related project.
