A Wild Monster High Doll Appears!

Bet you weren't expecting that! (Since they don't even make MH dolls anymore...)

Anyway, I have slowly been cleaning off the desk in our house, which has been buried under piles of stuff for months now. In the process, I unearthed several dolls that I bought ages ago (right around when MH was stopping, actually) that I had been saving, in case I never had new dolls again. Of course, we all know that I branched out and buy all kinds of dolls now, but I didn't know that then.

The point is, I found a Monster High doll, brand new in box, and a new character to boot. So join me on this journey, as I fall in love with MH all over again.

Please meet Dayna Treasura Jones, daughter of Davy Jones:

Not the best name MH ever came up with, but not the worst either (We should have a poll about which is worst, actually, that would be fun. I love Venus, for instance, but McFlytrap is a... choice.)

Dayna is part of the Shriekwrecked line, which seems to have a story, but if there's a movie or something to go with it, I never saw it. (It's also totally a rip off of the other MH story where they were on a ship/shipwrecked, Skull Shores. I did see that movie once! Never did get an Andy Beast doll, which is a pity, I remember liking him. Can you rip off your own property? Anyway, I digress). She's not exactly a pirate, like Vandala, but she's kind of pirate themed? It's unclear to me exactly what kind of monster she's supposed to be (mainly because it's unclear to the world what Davy Jones is, apart from the character in in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but I'm pretty sure they made that appearance up). I kind of think she's a star, the North Star, maybe? Guiding sailors? Alternatively, given the middle name and her skintone, maybe she's meant to be treasure?

Whatever she is, Dayna is nautical AF. She's also from the reboot of MH (which, for the record, I DID NOT LIKE). This means that her face is a bit rounder and softer-looking than some of the other dolls. ~~NO ONE ASKED FOR THAT, MATTEL~~. I didn't get a lot of reboot dolls, and I didn't actually buy Dayna for a long time after she came out. But the thought of there not being any more MH dolls of any kind finally convinced me, and I snagged her at TRU back when they were still in business. ~~And then I left her in a box for three or four years.~~

Ok, enough backstory! Back to the review.

Here's the back of the box, which has great art, a short paragraph that's in pirate speak and doesn't help at all in deciding what kind of monster Dayna is, and a quick rundown of all her transforming clothing. Did I mention that she has transforming clothing? One of the reasons I was so hesitant to get her at first is that she comes with a molded top, which I usually hate on dolls, and the transforming dress seemed gimmicky... but as it turns out, I'm actually here for this gimmick.

Fresh out of the plastic:

The plastic was already almost totally unglued, so unboxing her was a snap. The worst part was her head, which had THREE plastic ties holding it into the box, and that very elaborate set-up keeping her hat in place.

It's a treasure chest, obviously, and it really opens and closes. Inside, there are molded gold coins with a surprising amount of detail. I kept the hat closed most of the time I was taking pictures, because it just looks better, and because it doesn't stay in that posed half-open position willingly.

Here's a closer shot of Dayna's face:

She has stars in her eyes, and her freckles are also star shaped. The plastic that her head is made out of is very shimmery, and although not exactly see-through, has a definite translucent quality. The MH wiki link I posted says she's supposed to be some kind of ghost, which I don't really agree with, but maybe that's what they were going for? I also think that her eyebrow detail, with the separate painted hairs in the middle, is unusual for MH.

Dayna's molded top:

Your classic black and gold, with some blue and pink accents. The painted shapes are definitely supposed to look like gems (except the skullette, obvi), which fits the treasure theme. As far as molded tops go, it's pretty, and very detailed. The paint job is also good.

Trying to show off her belt buckle, which has the MH logo on it. It didn't come out well in my pictures, alas. The gold fabric belt and buckle are part of the skirt, not a separate piece. Dayna's skirt has a pattern of gems, jewels, and skullettes that look like gems. It's also gold holo, which is awesome.

Bottom of the skirt, and Dayna's shoes. She was packaged with one shoe revealed, so you can see the treasure inside. These shoes are a work of fucking art, and we are going to discuss them more later.

Such nautical, very pirate. Did all the Shriekwrecked dolls have this same backdrop? I don't know.

I was super anxious to get Dayna into her transformed dress, and I'm sure you all want to see it, so here's that:

It's overall blue, with a definite map motif. I love how they went to the trouble to not just have a skull and crossbones island, but a skullette and crossbones island. ~~THIS IS WHAT WE ASK FOR, MATTEL~~. I also love pirate octopus with eyepatch. (It says on the wiki that Dayna doesn't have a pet, but if she did it would totally be that octopus.) The bodice totally covers the molded top, nothing peeks out or shows through.

So, how did the dress transform? Well, Dayna came with instructions:

I have to say, as far as instructions go, they weren't terribly helpful, but they were enough to get me started.

Step 1: The skirt opens all the way down the back, via some almost invisible velcro.

Here it is open:

Once un-velcroed, you can see the other pattern underneath, as well as the folded-down bodice.

Step 2: Rotate the dress. Here's what the technical working of the skirt looks like:

Basically there's a gold plastic belt, the skirt is sewn to it on one side, and attached with that black loop on the other. What you do is rotate the belt, which fits into a groove in Dayna's waist, and bring the revealed blue pattern to the front. (Note that unless you pull the fabric down and hold it (as you can see I did because that's my thumb) you can't really see this mechanism. It's pretty well hidden under the skirt and the gold fabric belt. The belt rotates easily and smoothly.

Step 3: Fold up the top, and re-velcro everything in the back.

The folded down top will now be front, and you can just flip it up and use it to cover Dayna's molded top. Then you re-fasten the velcro in the back, and as you can see above, it's still somehow on the inside of the dress. It's sewed in such a clever way. The velcro doesn't sit perfectly neatly at the place where the top joins the bottom, but it doesn't look much worse than the back of other MH dresses (especially for characters with tails or wings).

Once re-done up, the black skirt is all bunched in the back, but rather than look bad, it gives the dress a neat underskirt/bustle effect.

Now, one of the reasons I was hesitant to get this doll back in the day, is that we all know how I love to re-dress my dolls. I knew her molded top wouldn't come off, and after playing with her dress for a bit, I assumed it wouldn't come off either... but that is not the case! As you can see above, the belt actually has a snap in it, which means you can undo it. (It's not easy to undo, presumably because they don't want the belt to pop open when you're trying to rotate the skirt around, but why would they have included a snap if you're not meant to unsnap it? It could easily have just been solid plastic.) I undid it and took the skirt off, is what I'm saying.

As long as you can get the big part of the wedge there through the loop, it just slips right off.

Here's the dress removed from Dayna:

You can see that it's all one piece of clothing, essentially a circle skirt made of two different fabrics. This seems like a good place to mention my theory: It seems like the blue dress is meant to be a map, which leads to the treasure, which is the black and gold dress. This is really apparent in the above picture. Makes you wonder why she was packaged in the black outfit, but who knows, I might be totally off.

Along with the dress, here are Dayna's other removable accessories:

Shoes and earrings! I definitely did not know what those earrings were supposed to be at first. Also, please note the red X on the outer heel of the shoes; that marks where the treasure is!

These SHOES man. In addition to the X design, which I LOVE, they have a ton of molded detail. Both the inner and outer shoe have latitude and longitude lines, like a map, and that compass detail is perfect. It's got all the points! The tops also look folded over, like boots would, and have molded buttons. Then, the outer piece has a rope detail. The detail and craftsmanship in these shoes are the kinds of things that I am HERE FOR.

You might be afraid that the bottoms will fall off, but they don't. They snap onto the shoes via that little hole you can see in the top of the heel. There are little nubbins on the shoes that fit into the hole, snugly, but not so tight that you can't get them off. It's pretty much perfect. The gold itself is also molded and not just painted. And, the shoes are made out of a flexible vinyl, not hard plastic, so they're very easy to get on and off. (The bottom bits are hard plastic, but that's not the part that goes onto her foot).

The earrings, after much examination, are parrots! They don't have a ton of painted detail, but more than I was expecting for something so small. It's a tiny parrot, sitting in a ring of... gems? Unclear, but they're cute and pirate-y nonetheless.

To get back to Dayna herself, here's a look at her gloves:

She's not the first MH girl with painted/molded gloves, and you can always switch their hands, so this doesn't bother me at all. I also love all the detail in this hand; the heart, the fishnet pattern, it's great. Here, you can also kind of see the pattern on her arm (this was IMPOSSIBLE to get on camera for some reason). At first I thought it was some kind of scar, like Operetta has, but actually Dayna's lower arms and legs are molded with a star/constellation pattern.

It's slightly easier to see on her legs:

I don't think these are real constellations, but I'm not sure. This is an amazing detail, the kind of thing I miss from MH, and that you would never know if you left her in the box; you can't really see her legs under the skirt. Dayna also has stars molded into the left side of her face, but you're going to have to take my word for that because the pictures didn't come out at all.

Here's a look at Dayna's midsection without the skirt/belt:

You can see the groove where the belt fits in. Looking at this, I thought they had carved some off the typical MH torso, and so I was concerned about the potential for clothes sharing. Not that that was going to stop me.

For testing purposes, I grabbed the first doll I saw off my shelf who had an easy to remove/one piece outfit, and did a swap:

Here is Home Ick Abbey, modeling the skirt, earrings, and shoes. I was too lazy to find her a top, so pretend this is one of those high-fashion topless shoots they used to do on ANTM. ~~The backdrop was also falling down, hence my finger there.~~

In doing this outfit trade, I discovered that the belt actually fit around Abbey's waist pretty well. (I didn't snap it because I was going to take it off in a minute, and it's a pain to undo, but I think I could have). This led me to conclude that rather than carve a MH torso down to get that groove in Dayna's waist, they had actually molded more plastic on top of it to make her top and hips. (In retrospect, this makes total sense, because obviously a molded top will be bigger than a regular torso, thus already creating half the groove.)

It's definitely the case that Dayna's torso is bigger than usual MH girls, as you can see that the velcro on Abbey's dress doesn't quite fasten all the way on Dayna:

Still good enough for her to clothes swap though; any dress with more stretch in it would be fine. I'm more concerned about putting Dayna in something that doesn't totally cover her molded top than I am about the velcro issue. Velcro is pretty forgiving.

Bottom line here is that Dayna can totally share clothes with other MH dolls, if you are willing to fiddle with her belt to get it undone. Which I was. Please do note that I put Abbey's legs through the hole in the middle of the skirt, rather than use the belt to hold it up (because I wasn't going to hook it) so the black fabric here doesn't bunch in the back but just lays nicely like a petticoat underneath all the way around. The bodice also fastened and stayed up, no problem. I was afraid it would be too big, because of Dayna's larger torso, but it's not. The shoes and earrings are also fully interchangeable.

This is also a nice shot of Danya's hat when it's closed. It's a treasure chest, accented with a blue feather. And it has a ton of molded detail as well. The hat sits on a headband, which is plastic tied to Dayna's head. You could cut the ties and remove it, but I'm not going to do that.

If you notice that Dayna's hair looks different here, it's because I brushed it, which I'm sad to say did not improve it much. The one thing I don't like about the doll is her hair; it's that kind of half-assed wavy hair that MH does, which always looks frizzy, and it also has crappy tinsel. I don't mind tinsel in doll hair in general, and I get how she's gold and sparkly all over so it fits, but this tinsel in particular is shit.

Here's the back of Dayna's head, fresh out of the box:

The tinsel is just very sparse, and because it's straight and the hair is not, it looks out of place. Also, I know it's partly because I left her in the box for years, but her hair was all mushed in the back. And then when I bushed it, it became just sort of a frizzy lump. (This is typical for doll hair of this style, unfortunately.)

While we're on the topic of MH hair, poor Abbey up there has a terrible case of glue seepage. Her head is very sticky, and her roots are pretty yellow. I don't miss that part of MH. She's still lovely though, probably my favorite look out of all the Abbeys I have.

Anywho, let's not end on a downer. Here's one last shot of Dayna and Abbey together:

So different, but both so cute.

Bottom Line: Despite being from the MH reboot, having a molded top, and not being a clear monster type, Dayna is a great doll. The star details on her face and body are unique to her, the amount of detail and thought put into her theme and look is amazing, her transforming dress and accessories all work really well and are well made, and she can even share clothes with other MH dolls. I'm glad that I bought her back in the day, and she's been a bright spot in my week (figuratively and somewhat literally).

Aquata, who has ALL the bangs. Also, her hair curl is still perfect and I'm very proud.

Arista, personal fav. Her hair is... not as impeccable.

Attina, with a very big smile and a curled headpiece.

Adella, who has the only flower decoration on her top (which is held up with double sided tape and sheer force of will).

Alana, who, for reasons unclear to me, has twice as many accessories as anyone else. She has a headpiece, necklace, tail decoration, and shawl. Some of them have some of those things, she has them all. And no one else has a shawl.

And finally (not in Daughters of Triton order):

Andina! Her hair has apparently been washed (per the eBay seller) which I think has compromised the curl somewhat, but she is otherwise perfect.

Got a bit of the crazy eyes, but what can you do? Also, whoever designed these really went overboard with the width of her headpiece.

Tail decor. (All the pieces of their outfits are removable, for the record, including this, which has a plastic button on the back).

ALL SIX SISTERS. Two blonde, two brunette, two with black hair. Although they are in song order here, I put them in rainbow order when I put them back on the shelf, because it was really bothering me to have the hair colors together like that.

Also bothering me: Andrina doesn't have anything on her neck, when all the others do. At first I was worried that she came missing a piece, but I Googled up some in-box pics, and no. They designed her that way, sans necklace or halter top or anything.

Wouldn't you think my collection's complete? IT IS.

Thoughts on Sleeping Beauty

Is the best part of Sleeping Beauty when Phillip looks at Baby Aurora and is like, "No thanks." (No, the best part is when Maleficent has Phillip in chains and hits on him, but I digress).

Also, did you know that Mary Costa (voice of Aurora) is still alive and kicking?

I'm sure it made sense way back when this was written (the fairy tale, not the Disney movie) but why is it a spinning wheel? Was pricking your finger on that like, a thing?

God, Fauna is just the best. "You know, sometimes I don't think she's really very happy."

I know it's a fairy tale, and I'm totally behind it, but it still cracks me up how Phillip just jumps into her song and is like, "Hey baby, I'm totally your dream prince," and Aurora's like "K". Also, he says, "I didn't mean to frighten you." How in the fuck did you think she was going to react?

Aurora's answer to "when can I see you again" progress extremely quickly from "never", to "maybe someday", to "this evening". With very little prodding.

Oh God, the cake that isn't baked, but is frosted and has LIT CANDLES on it, just KILLS ME.

There are so many drunk people in old Disney movies.

The oboe music and the green fire used to scare me so bad as a kid. Still pretty effective, I have to say.

The visuals in this movie are so beautiful. It's really a testament to animation. The whole thing is like a painting come to life.

Maleficent: "I have plans for our royal guest." Yeah, I bet you do, you saucy minx. Otherwise, surely she would just kill him? Or maybe Merryweather's spell means she can't, since the true love's kiss is part of it? Then again, maybe Maleficent just thought making Phillip wait 100 years would be HILARIOUS. (Which it kind of is).

Who do you think painted Maleficent's nails?

Somehow, turning the raven into stone is an ok use of the good fairies' magic.

Samson doesn't get enough credit. I kind of think Phillip doesn't either man, he charges right at that dragon. (And Merryweather tries to follow him, lol).

When Phillip's cape gets caught on the thorns? NO CAPES.

Watching Snow White for only the third or fourth time in my life (which is very low for me and Disney movies). It's really grown on me as I've gotten older. I used to find Snow very irritating, but honestly, she's doing the best she can being in a fairy tale move from the 1930s. I can also appreciate the style of it better now, knowing more about the history of it.

The music has grown on me too. I don't know why.

Snow: I'm sure no nest could possibly be big enough for me
Me: Well, gorillas make nests, so.

Also, has anyone ever noticed that the Evil Queen's basement lair is full of skeletons in horrifying poses? Like, presumably these are all other people she killed down there, right?

Snow White is a little saucy!

I always thought the Queen believed the apple would kill Snow White, but she has a line about knowing that it won't, and that the dwarves will think she's dead and bury her alive. Which is much worse. (Fortunately they do the whole glass coffin thing instead).

Also, the Queen tells Snow that the apple is a magic wishing apple, and whatever she wishes for will come true if she takes a bite. Snow wishes to go off to the castle and marry the prince. Which is what happens (eventually). So, I guess she was telling the truth?

You know, the deer are the real heroes in this piece. Well, them, and lightning.

So, we watched Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat over the weekend, courtesy of Andrew Lloyd Webber's YouTube channel and the thing they're doing during this whole lockdown time.

This production was filmed in 1999, with Donny Osmond as Joseph, and it was a trip. But what we need to talk about is Mrs. Potiphar's (played by Joan Collins) outfit.

WHAT THE HELL. She like, seduces Joseph, I get that, but OH MY GOD.

When she first came on, I legit thought she was showing me her nipples.

P.S. I am not comfortable with them trying to make Donny Osmond sexy. He spent way too much of the play like this:

-Listening to Les Mis. It KILLS me every time how literally everything that happens with Fantine is for NOTHING because Cosette ISN'T EVEN SICK. Nevermind being close to dying, she's FINE. (I mean, she probably would have died from all the abuse and malnutrition eventually, but you get my point). Also, do we think Javert is setting a trap for Valjean with the story about the convict? Surely he could look at this other dude's brand and know that it doesn't say 24601?

-Possibly my favorite thing Marius does in this play is tell Thenardier to get lost during the wedding at the end. I like to think he's angry for the sake of Eponine.

-Another perk of being home: My hairtie just broke, and I definitely don't have extras at the office...

Work From Home Log Day 9: (Day 10?)

-9:45am: I do not remember this many episodes of So Weird making me cry. It's a lot deeper than I was expecting. Also, when was Twilight written? Because this episode has an immortal teenager, part of a family that moves whenever their secret gets out/almost gets out. Just saying.

-10:00am: Oh God Fi is explaining a chat room to her mother, and the mom feels old. A CHAT ROOM.

-2:30pm: I am so sick of meetings. I understand that we're having more because we are all remote, but I am sick of them. So grateful that tomorrow is Saturday.

-1:00pm: Discovered that So Weird is on Disney Plus, and am about to reinvigorate my crush on Erik von Detten. Also, having never seen it when I watched So Weird the first time, I didn't previously realize how much this show is The X-Files for kids.

-2:00pm: Why does working from home make me so tired? It's literally less effort.

-5:00pm: Not much to say today apparently. I also actually had work to do, so that helped.

-2:15pm: DAMN the king in Cinderella is sassy.

-2:30pm: Yeah, it's all 'let's get along with the cat' until he's stopping you from getting the key. Then all bets are off. Also, I freaking love that Bruno is the hero in this movie.

Work from Home Log Day 2 (sans timestamps):

-Downloaded Disney Plus last night, and I do not regret it one bit.

-Watching The Three Musketeers. God, Chris O'Donnell gets his ass kicked A LOT in this movie.

-Also, the actor playing the henchman in this movie, who is basically Guy of Gisborne, is actually the same dude who plays Guy in Prince of Thieves (Michael Wincott). I... can't decide how I feel about that.

-Unexpected perk of working from home? I can sing along with my music out loud.

-Watched The Little Mermaid TV series (well, one episode). Still delightful, although it got dark kinda fast when the shark people extorted Ariel to write a fake note by threatening to stab Flounder.

-Talked to Dad today, and he's been sent home for 6-8 weeks because he's over 60 and his job is being cautious. I appreciate that, but he and Mom may actually kill each other.

Working from Home Log, Day 1

- 9:30am: The actress on SVU who I thought looked kind of like Susan from Friends turned out to actually be Susan from Friends (Jessica Hecht).

-10:00am: Am rediscovering Snapchat.

-11:00am: Andrew put some corned beef in the slow cooker before he went to work today, and it just started to smell like corned beef in here.

-12:00pm: This woman on the Price is Right had to pick a number between 0 and 9 and get it exactly right to win a car, and she DID. Shook.

-12:20pm: The president interrupted Price is Right, so I switched back to SVU. Someone just handed Stabler a floppy disc of info.

-1:00pm: Had a pretty serious Skype meeting for work, but the bright side is they are doing just about everything they can to keep us employed and insured.

-2:00pm: This is by far the most actual phone calls I have ever used my cell phone for.

-5:30pm: Nothing else interesting to report. But please enjoy this!

Has anyone watched Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist? We randomly watched the first episode a few weeks back, and it's pretty good!

We also gave Stumptown a chance (mostly because of Cobie Smulders), and still have like 10 episodes on the DVR, but it didn't quite grab us.

In other news, they cancelled church, and so this was a very weird Sunday.

Andrew and I finally watched Detective Pikachu (we got it for Christmas) and it was so good! I was worried that it was going to be weird and I wasn't sure how I felt about Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu, but it was great.

Basically, it's been like 20 years, and I still love Pokemon. <3
