The Cayman Islands Legal Services Council (the “Council”) is a statutory body established under the Legal Services Act, 2020. The Council encourages and promotes the upholding of the rule of law and high standards of professional conduct by attorneys-at-law, regulates the practice of law and supervises legal education and training in the Cayman Islands.

The Council is responsible for the issuance of practising certificates, certificates of recognition of law entities, annual operational licences for law firms and certificates of good standing for attorneys-at-law.

Effective 1 January 2026, the Council will administer practising certificates, certificates of recognition of law entities, annual operational licences for law firms and annual compliance certificates. The processes and portals remain the same; only the administering body changes.

Practising Certificates

Apply/renew via the Law Courts portal. Annual publication of certificate holders in February.

What to do if my application is in process?

It continues uninterrupted but your correspondence will now be with the Council instead of the Courts or the Attorney General’s Office

Who keeps the Roll?

The Clerk of the Court continues to keep the Roll.

Will processing times change?

No. Historic standards are maintained.

Do firm administrators or attorneys need training?

No. Steps are unchanged.

What about disciplinary procedures?

Complaints should be addressed to the Council and delivered to the Secretariat by hand, email, or mail.

Do law firms need to file an annual compliance certificate by 31 January 2026?

No, the first annual compliance certificate will not be due until 31 January 2027. Please see section 66 of the Act for further information.
