The Leather Conservation Centre (LCC) was founded in 1978 with the aim of conserving material heritage made from leather, skin and animal membrane materials.

The LCC takes a holistic approach to conservation; operating a specialist studio for treatment, undertaking research to advance knowledge and techniques used in the field of conservation, and providing a range of educational activities.

The LCC is at the centre of a broad network of heritage and industry specialists and traditional practitioners, and proactively works to retain and record important historic technologies and craft skills at risk of extinction.

In 2025, the Leather Conservation Centre relocated to Canopy in Leicester, marking a new chapter in our history. Our new studio is equipped with specialist tools and facilities to support a full range of leather and related materials conservation treatments.

The spacious studio allows the majority of conservation work to be carried out on site, ensuring high standards of care and security for all objects. However, we remain flexible and can undertake conservation work in situ where required.

A range of specialist literature and leather conservation materials are available to purchase through our Products page.

Supported by

The Worshipful Company of Leathersellers, The Worshipful Company of Saddlers and the National Lottery Fund are very generous supporters of the LCC. Their funding plays a crucial role in the conservation of historic leather objects.

What cannot be measured is the moral support given to the staff at the LCC by being part of the Leathersellers’ “Family” and everyone is proud to be associated with Leathersellers and other livery companies including The Worshipful Companies of Saddlers, Glovers, Cordwainers and Curriers.
