Types of Intelligent Technologies

Before we dive into specific SAP intelligent technologies and solutions, there are a handful of key, system-agnostic technologies that should be discussed. These can help businesses develop greater efficiency and lower costs. Here is a look at each:

Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to technologies that enable machines to replicate or augment human reasoning and decision-making. AI has existed in various forms for decades, from automated phone systems to early machine learning models that identified patterns in structured data.

A key subset of AI, machine learning, focuses on identifying relationships in large datasets so organizations can make better predictions and decisions. Common algorithms include linear regression, naïve Bayes, k-means clustering, and neural networks, often combined with automation tools like robotic process automation for greater impact.

Since 2022, generative AI has emerged as the most significant development in the AI landscape. Unlike traditional machine learning, which identifies patterns in existing data, generative AI uses large language models (LLMs) to produce new content (text, code, analysis, and recommendations) in response to natural language prompts. For enterprise software, this shift has been transformative: users no longer need to navigate menus or know transaction codes to interact with complex systems. Instead, they can ask questions and issue instructions in plain language and receive contextually relevant responses drawn from their business data.

SAP has positioned generative AI as central to its product strategy through three primary investments. First, Joule—SAP's AI copilot—is now embedded across the SAP portfolio, providing natural language interaction for business tasks ranging from drafting journal entries to analyzing supply chain exceptions. Second, SAP AI Foundation provides the underlying infrastructure for building, deploying, and managing AI solutions on SAP BTP, including access to large language models from partners such as Microsoft Azure OpenAI, Google, and AWS through the Generative AI Hub. Third, SAP is moving toward agentic AI: purpose-built AI agents that can autonomously execute multi-step business processes without human intervention at each step, such as the Cash Management Agent for bank reconciliation or the Bid Analysis Agent for supplier evaluation.

SAP's approach to generative AI emphasizes keeping business data within SAP's security and compliance boundaries, with no customer data shared with model providers for training purposes.

Blockchain

Blockchain is a decentralized ledger that uses a peer-to-peer network to increase transaction transparency. First popularized in the late 2000s with Bitcoin, blockchain’s business applications expanded in the 2010s, particularly for improving financial reporting and supply chain traceability.

Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects devices and assets so they can communicate and share data. For businesses, IoT enables real-time feedback on user behavior, equipment performance, and maintenance needs.

In homes, IoT simplifies everyday tasks—smart thermostats, for example, can learn your preferences and automatically adjust temperatures without manual input.

SAP Intelligent Technologies Products

SAP has been adding “smart” functionalities to its product suite over the past decade. Solutions such as SAP Predictive Analytics and SAP SuccessFactors’ Intelligent Services tool have been available since as early as 2008, helping users collect historical data and make predictions about future results.

Intelligent technologies have also been integrated into SAP’s current business suite, SAP S/4HANA. For example, machine learning capabilities were added in 2017 in order to perform easier goods and invoice receipt reconciliation, as well as automate invoice assignments. Predictive accounting functionality was subsequently added to the SAP S/4HANA Finance line of business in 2018.

As the demand for intelligent technologies grew in the mid 2010s, SAP launched the SAP Leonardo toolset in 2017, which consisted of services in areas such as IoT, machine learning, analytics, blockchain, and big data. In 2019, SAP began breaking each of these out into its own area of development.

Since 2023, SAP's AI strategy has accelerated significantly, moving beyond individual AI services toward a unified platform approach. SAP AI Foundation, introduced at SAP Sapphire 2025, consolidates the infrastructure needed to build, deploy, and operate AI at enterprise scale. Joule has evolved from a conversational assistant into an agentic AI network capable of orchestrating multi-step workflows across SAP and third-party systems. SAP has also deepened its partnerships with Microsoft, AWS, and Google Cloud to provide customers with access to leading large language models through the Generative AI Hub, while keeping business data within SAP's security and compliance boundaries.

The following products represent SAP's current intelligent technologies offerings. For products that have been retired, rebranded, or superseded, see the Legacy Products section below.
