Baseline on the Gantt: How to Set One
Set a baseline to track planned vs. actual data in real time and run a variance report later in your project.
A Gantt chart baseline establishes a fixed reference point for tracking and measuring project performance that includes the schedule, cost and scope.
- The Gantt chart displays baseline data including start dates, end dates, durations and costs alongside the current schedule
- If multiple baselines are set on the same project, we will apply the most recent baseline and any previous baselines are overridden
- Import baselines from Microsoft Project
- Generate a variance report to compare the planned vs. actual baseline
How to Set a Baseline
Set a baseline at the start of your project before you need to adjust your planned dates. Do so by clicking the settings button on the Gantt. The option to set a baseline is listed under advanced settings.

Once a baseline is set, you'll see your planned start and finish dates populate under the baseline start and finish columns. These dates are frozen unless you set your baseline again which will override your previous baseline.

Once you start moving your planned start and finish dates, you can see your project variance.
If you'd like to see this information in a report, pull the variance report where you can compare actual to planned, actual to baseline and planned to baseline.
If you're looking to calculate your project buffer, the variance report is a great way to see your buffer. On the Gantt, you can only see planned, actual or baseline one at a time.
