We agree with some very prominent people. Here's our proposal...

Fact Checking Day on April 2, 2026 marks almost a year since Lead Stories published our last fact check as part of Meta's Third-Party Fact Checking Partnership.

Since that day we've published over 1500 fact checks on our U.S. website on topics ranging from fake Epstein Files emails mentioning Elon Musk, AI generated or enhanced imagery that went viral in the wake of the deaths of Charlie Kirk, Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, made-up stories about over 500 U.S. celebrities (by our latest, updated count) that were largely created in Vietnam, hoaxes about the Super Bowl and TPUSA halftime shows and in recent weeks countless examples of AI-generated slop, fake videos and wild rumors about the current Iran conflict.

Anecdotally, in all that time we have encountered maybe five user contributed Community Notes on Facebook and Instagram. Several of them contained links to our fact checks or to the work of colleagues at other fact checking organizations. As Meta's Oversight Board recently noted, there are indeed "serious doubts about the extent to which community notes can meaningfully address misinformation".

So yes. Fact checking still matters.

As recently as March 16, 2026, President Trump was complaining about unnamed "Fake News Media" outlets creating and spreading AI-generated footage of burning buildings and ships:

Buildings and Ships that are shown to be on fire are not -- It's FAKE NEWS, generated by A.I. For instance, Iran, working in close coordination with the Fake News Media, shows our great USS Abraham Lincoln Aircraft Carrier, one of the largest and most prestigious Ships in the World, burning uncontrollably in the Ocean. Not only was it not burning, it was not even shot at -- Iran knows better than to do that! The story was knowingly FAKE and, in a certain way, you can say that those Media Outlets that generated it should be brought up on Charges for TREASON for the dissemination of false information!

Should all false information be deleted or removed from the internet and is posting or creating it the equivalent of "treason"? I wouldn't want to go that far. Being able to freely communicate false or unconfirmed information is an essential part of the "Freedom of Speech" protected from interference by Congress under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

That same First Amendment also mentions "Freedom of the Press", which protects journalists and fact checkers who want to loudly shout: "Extra, Extra! That claim that guy is making over there is false! We have the evidence! Read all about it!"

Even X is now coming round to the idea of better labeling AI generated content about the Iran war, with Nikita Bier, their Head of Product posting on March 3, 2026:

Starting now, users who post AI-generated videos of an armed conflict--without adding a disclosure that it was made with AI--will be suspended from Creator Revenue Sharing for 90 days. Subsequent violations will result in a permanent suspension from the program.

(Apparently they are still fine with people posting unlabeled AI war slop as long as they aren't making money off it through their Creator Revenue Sharing program. But it is a good first step and I applaud them for it.)

Then again, the AI labels on X, just like on most other platforms, are often small and insufficiently prominent. Grandpa can't see your small, grey bit of text on a white or light-grey background and he doesn't know the meaning of "AI" or "AI Info" or what that cute logo or watermark means.

(Actual AI labels on several major platforms, true size.)

Here's a revolutionary suggestion: why not make the labels bigger, more informative and more legible? And no, there is no need to remove, cover or censor anything. All we are suggesting is to prominently add *more* information, preferably with verifiable, named sources. You know, journalism?

(The difference between fact checking and censorship, illustrated.)

And why stop at AI? If you know a picture has been photoshopped, a statistic has been made-up or a photo shows an old event and not the "current thing", why not tell people about that too? Preferably as soon as you become aware of it, and not after it has already gone viral. Why wait until various partisans reach consensus on what extra information can and can't be shown under a Community Notes system?

Just show the information, with the sources, and let people make up their own mind.

There are people out there whose job it is to figure out if something is real or not and who will happily bring you the receipts. They're called fact checkers. And we're ready to help.

Happy fact checking day!

Oh, joy! It is the most wonderful day of the year (if you are a fact checker)... April Fool's Day is upon us, that day when every outlet, brand, influencer and Internet jokester under the sun tries to come up with something original to fool their audience with. Listing every effort at humor, satire, parody etc. on such a day is an impossible task, but here is a running list of the ones we've enjoyed most today:

Ryanair Goes Corporate Comms

Ryanair was quick out of the gate (get it?) with a post that claimed that from now on they would be adopting a more "corporate and professional approach in our communications" after being famous for whimsical and trolling social media posts. The post appeared in the evening of March 31 in Europe but by that time April 1 had already rolled around in some parts of the world, which is one of the perks if you are an airline. The announcement can be seen here (archived here):

Dogecoin Goes Corporate Comms

Essentially the same joke at cryptocurrency Dogecoin, famous for its meme-inspired Shiba Inu logo and frequent exclamations of "wow". They too will now be going in a more corporate direction, becoming "DogeCoin Financial Solutions LLC™". Wow, such joke (archived here)!

WordPress Gets A Dongle

Server hosting company 365i claims the popular WordPress software (used to manage websites) will get a new version that will require a physical and heavy hardware key dongle to be inserted into your computer, for security reasons:

The WordPress Foundation has announced that WordPress 7.0 will require a physical USB-C hardware key plugged into your computer to access wp-admin. Four pricing tiers start at £29.99. The Agency Bundle weighs 1.4kg. We have questions.

Dutch Right-Wing Politician Takes Over

Dutch right-wing politician Geert Wilders posted on X he got a call from the Prime Minister of the Netherlands asking him if he was ready to take over the country because he "underestimated" how difficult the job would be. Power would be transfered at noon, a state of emergency would be declared, centers for asylum seekers would be closed and taxes on fuel would be lowered.
Cern Levels Up With Karts

CERN engineers at the Large Hadron Collider have reportedly upgraded the transport system used to travel around the 27-kilometer long tunnel system, and are now using levitating karts. Project Leader Mario and Safety Coordinator Luigi explain more here (archived here).

The Lead Stories Rome office looked into what is actually happening, so you know what is going on if you see social media posts about it. Agents from the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a unit within ICE focusing on cross-border crimes, will be present to support the U.S. State Department's Diplomatic Security Service.

They won't be on the streets, though, but they will operate from U.S. diplomatic offices, such as the Milan consulate. Their role will only be advisory and intelligence-based, while security operations on Italian territory will be under the exclusive direction of Italian authorities. The long-sought clarification came from the Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, and the U.S. ambassador to Italy, Tilman J. Fertitta, after days of speculation and misinformation fueled by conflicting statements from the authorities, amidst mounting public outrage, initially sparked by a story in the Italian daily newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano on January 24, 2026, whose headline read: "Milan Cortina, the notorious ICE arrives in Italy for Olympic security."

It's not unusual for HSI, within ICE, to play a role for U.S. delegations abroad, and in previous Olympic events, such as the 2024 Paris Games, HSI gave its support, along with other federal agencies. But the plan to send U.S. agents to Italy was revealed at a time when images of the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis were all over the Italian news. The prospect of foreign agents involved in an immigration crackdown that turned deadly, suddenly coming to Italy, spurred an immediate outcry. Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala defined ICE as a "militia that kills" and insisted that it was not welcome in his city, which will host the opening ceremony of the Games on February 6, 2026.

A communication debacle: a weak rebuttal was followed by what sounded like half an admission, until, after a meeting with the U.S. ambassador to Italy, it was finally clarified that no ICE agents would be on the ground and Italy would maintain total control of security on its soil.

Will it be enough to stop false rumors and misinformation? Tensions remain high.
False claims about the Charlie Kirk assassination, the Jeffrey Epstein files, and purported verbal gaffes by President Trump topped the list of most-read Lead Stories fact checks in 2025. Here are our most read fact checks of the past year, reflecting our reader's interest in finding out the truth about various viral stories. If you see something suspicious in 2026, do let us know via tips@leadstories.com so we can investigate it for you!

10. Fact Check: 'Bubba' Reference In Mark Epstein Email To Brother Jeffrey Epstein Was Not About Trump And A Horse -- Spokesperson Confirmed

Was Mark Epstein referring to a horse named "Bubba" in an email to his brother Jeffrey Epstein when he wrote "Ask him if Putin has the photos of Trump blowing Bubba"? No, that's not true: A spokesperson for Mark Epstein told Lead Stories in a phone call the 2018 message was not about a horse. The claim that it was a horse spread across social platforms soon after Mark Epstein gave a statement to Lead Stories ruling out viral claims that "Bubba" was a reference to former President Bill Clinton. Epstein also said it was a "humorous private exchange between two brothers."

9. Fact Check: Many Of 274 FBI Agents Noted In Internal Report Were Responding To January 6 Capitol Riot -- Report Says They Were Not 'Undercover' Or 'Embedded' In Crowd

Did the FBI have 274 plainclothes agents undercover and embedded in January 6 crowds at the US Capitol? No, that's not true: Many of 274 FBI agents documented in a report were part of the law enforcement response after the crowd stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The agents were not undercover nor were they embedded in the crowd. The article making the claim appears to be referencing a report showing FBI agents were responding to the crowds at the Capitol and reports of explosives being found, not that they were in the crowd before the riots began. The words "plainclothes" and "undercover" do not appear in the report.

8. Fact Check:Trump Did NOT Say He Talked To 'The President of Puerto Rico'

Did Donald Trump once say he had talked to the "President of Puerto Rico", as social media posts claim? No, that's not true: Lead Stories found no public record of Trump ever saying that. He did, in 2017, say he had talked to the "President of the Virgin Islands," a gaffe which his staff at that time cleared up in an official transcript, changing "President" to "Governor".

7. Fact Check: President Trump Did NOT Mistake 'Transgenic' For 'Transgender' While Talking About Mice Before Congress

Did President Donald Trump confuse research on transgenic mice with research involving "making mice transgender," when addressing Congress, as some social media users suggested? No, that's not true: On March 5, 2025, the White House issued a press release outlining the research the President was referring to. The listed studies were about the effects of certain medical interventions on mice that were used as lab analogs for transgender humans and only one of them mentioned "transgenic mice" in its abstract.

6. Fact Check: Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo Did NOT Say They Are In 'Non-Demi-Curious Semi-Binary' Relationship

Did Ariana Grande or Cynthia Erivo say they are in a "non-demi-curious semi-binary" relationship? No, that's not true: The viral rumor originated from a page that described itself as satire. In part, the disclaimer said that it's where "truth goes to die".

5. Fact Check: Maddow, Colbert And Kimmel Did NOT Launch 'The Independent Desk' Newsroom Together -- Story Contains False Details

Did Rachel Maddow, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel just team up and launch a newsroom named "The Independent Desk"? No, that's not true: The story appeared on a recently launched website that does not list owners or publishers and it just adds Jimmy Kimmel to an older false story about Maddow and Colbert. The new story also contains verifiably untrue details about a non-existing pair of viral hashtags and a social media reaction.

4. Fact Check: Woman With Passport From Nonexistent Country 'Torenza' Did NOT Arrive At JFK

Did a woman arrive from Tokyo, Japan, at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City with a passport of a nonexistent country named "Torenza", as viral videos and text posts claim? No, that's not true: The viral videos reused old footage. It came from a TV show about airline workers that aired on cable in the U.S. in the mid-2000s. The viral videos incorporated AI generated narration and were likely produced by AI editing software.

3. Fact Check: 'The Shooting Of Charlie Kirk' Book Was NOT Published On Amazon By 'Anastasia J. Casey' Day Before Kirk Shooting

Was "The Shooting Of Charlie Kirk" book published by "Anastasia J. Casey" the day before Kirk was shot and killed in Utah? No, that's not true: An Amazon spokesperson told Lead Stories the title was published in the late afternoon on September 10, 2025, and the date of September 9, 2025, that appeared on the website for the book was a technical issue. An AI text detector concluded that it was 92.8 percent likely the book description was written by artificial intelligence.

2. Fact Check: Charlie Kirk Quote About "Brain Processing Power" Slammed Four Specific Black Women -- Read Full Quote

Did the late Charlie Kirk say "Black women do not have the brain processing power to be taken seriously" as social media posts claim? No, that's not a precise quote: Attacking affirmative action, Kirk slammed by name four prominent liberal Black women . On his podcast, he specifically criticized Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, TV host Joy Reid, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and attorney and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

1. Fact Check: No Evidence Erika Kirk's 'Romanian Angels' Evangelical Ministry Was Accused Of Trafficking Children Or Banned From Romania

Is there any evidence that Charlie Kirk's widow Erika Kirk's "Romanian Angels" or "Everyday Heroes like You" ministries were accused of "snatching children only to send them straight into sex and organ trafficking networks in the United Kingdom and Israel? No, that's not true: A review of Romanian court records and media reports by Lead Stories' Romanian staff found only positive mentions of the charities' work. The charity promoted a campaign for Americans to "adopt" an orphan by sending them Christmas gifts to be delivered by U.S. military personnel stationed in Romania. It was not involved in international adoptions.

New visa directives wrongly conflate journalism with censorship

The International Fact-Checking Network is deeply concerned by reports that the U.S. State Department has instructed consular officers to deny visas to individuals who have worked in fact-checking, content moderation, and trust and safety.

Fact-checking is journalism. It is the straightforward work of comparing public claims against the best available evidence and publishing the results for all to see. This work strengthens public debate -- it does not censor it. It is protected within the United States by the First Amendment, and the U.S. has long supported similar press freedoms internationally. To conflate this work with censorship is to misunderstand what fact-checkers do, or to deliberately misrepresent it.

The IFCN's global network includes more than 170 organizations in over 80 countries, all of them committed to nonpartisanship, transparency of sources, and corrections when errors occur. These are the same standards that have defined high-quality journalism for generations. Our signatories do not remove content from the internet. They add information to the public record.

We are also troubled by the broader implications for trust and safety professionals whose work protects children from exploitation, prevents fraud and scams, and combats coordinated harassment. These functions make the internet safer for everyone, including Americans. Content moderation by tech companies and journalistic fact-checking both are exercises of freedom of expression.

A free press and an informed public are foundational to democracy. Policies that treat the pursuit of accuracy as a disqualifying activity send a chilling message to journalists and others worldwide.

About the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at Poynter

The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at Poynter was launched in 2015 to bring together the growing community of fact-checkers around the world and advocates of factual information in the global fight against misinformation.

We enable fact-checkers through networking, capacity building and collaboration. The IFCN promotes the excellence of fact-checking to the verified signatories to the IFCN Code of Principles -- more than 170 organizations from 80 countries -- through advocacy, training and global events.

Our team monitors trends in the fact-checking field to offer resources to fact-checkers, contribute to public discourse and provide support for new projects and initiatives that advance accountability in journalism.

When I received an invitation last month to come to Macedonia to talk with the fact checkers and journalists at the Metamorphosis Foundation about Lead Stories' experience with our automatically generated short-form fact checking videos, I didn't hesitate for a moment. Ever since 2019 when I wrote about a network of Macedonian fake news websites operating out of the town of Kumanovo I knew I wanted to see the place for myself one day, and this was a perfect opportunity. It was also a unique chance to see Veles, another Macedonian town with a reputation when it comes to fake news.

The Kumanovo Connection & The Veles Teenagers

In 2019 Lead Stories, in collaboration with Peter Burger at the Dutch fact checking website Nieuwscheckers.nl, published a series of articles about a network of Macedonian fake news websites. One of those stories was titled "The Kumanovo-connection: Macedonian Spam Clans Still Make Money With Fake News About Muslims and Migrants", which you can still read here. It outlined how a group of people from Kumanovo ran dozens of websites copy-pasting and promoting inflammatory and often fake stories which they promoted via social media in order to earn money through advertising. As far as we could determine back then, the sites were operated by ordinary people, often with other jobs: a trucker, a policeman, even a military officer.

The result of the investigation was that the network spontaneously ceased existing right after we exposed it, or as we put it at the time "Macedonian Fake News Network Shuts Down Dozens Of Websites After Joint Investigation By Lead Stories & Nieuwscheckers", accompanied by this graphic:

The network in Kumanovo was part of a much larger trend in Macedonia at the time, where many people would run these "fake news" websites as a side hustle to make money. The town of Veles in particular became famous for it, with many international reporters visiting it and writing about the phenomenon. The "History" section of the town's Wikipedia page (archived here) currently even boasts an entire paragraph about it, after the information about antiquity, empires and other historical events you typically find in such a section:

Veles made international news in 2016 when it was revealed that a group of teenagers in the city were controlling over 100 websites producing fake news articles in support of U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, which were heavily publicized on the social media site Facebook.[1][10][11][12] Although the websites were politically charged, the motive of these websites is thought to be to generate massive amounts of ad revenue, bringing into question problems with Facebook's newsfeed algorithm.[13]

Since that time a lot has happened: when it comes to academic discussions, the term "fake news" has been largely replaced by terms like "misinformation"and "disinformation", and it now covers things like Foreign Influence and Information Manipulation ("FIMI"), scams, AI slop, conspiracy theories and good, old-fashioned false rumors.

My trip

The journey started inauspiciously: the plan was to fly in from my home in Belgium on Wednesday and to return on an afternoon flight on Friday. Unfortunately a ground crew strike in Brussels forced a rebooking to a flight on Tuesday evening, with a stopover in Vienna to change planes. We were halfway to Skopje on that second flight when the pilot announced the airport was closed due to windy conditions so I ended up back in Vienna on an airport terminal bench in the middle of the night, with a blanket from the airline and the promise of a new flight in the morning.

Fortunately the warm reception by my Macedonian hosts more than made up for the discomfort. They showed me around their offices where they publish their websites (including meta.mk, vistinomer.mk and portalb.mk), and I presented Lead Stories' work in automated fact check video generation (which you can see examples of on our TikTok account). We also discussed our experiences with Community Notes on X: because Macedonian is a language with relatively few speakers it is quite hard for notes to gain enough votes to become visible. And because there aren't many Macedonians on Bluesky (yet?), Unclouder, the Bluesky labeler with fact checks that I'm working on, might be of limited use to Macedonian audiences too, but we'll see.

I also had a nice walk around downtown Skopje to have a look at all the new statues it is famous for, including the one my host assured me was definitely NOT Alexander the Great (but that's a whole other story). I was told the entire downtown area had undergone a makeover in recent years and it definitely showed: brightly lit buildings, large squares, lots of open space and statues everywhere.

One of the personal highlights of the trip for me was getting to actually visit the towns of Veles and Kumanovo. They are both just a short car drive away from Skopje so on two evenings we went there to have dinner and take pictures. When I sent some of the images back to fellow fact checkers in Belgium it caused hilarity and calls to "Go get them, Maarten!" in the group chat. The closest we got to seeing any of the fabled "fake news factories" was when my hosts pointed out an apartment building they were supposedly operating from. But it was nice to finally see the place for myself.

There was an unexpected bonus at the end of the trip: it so happened that the local Institute of Communication Studies was having a conference in Skopje where they were presenting a report with recommendations on how to respond to foreign information manipulation. And that is how I suddenly found myself in a conference room listening to a speech by Hristijan Mickoski, the Prime Minister of Macedonia, sharing the stage with several academics and the British ambassador. I didn't learn any Earth-shattering new insights but that may have been the fault of the real-time translation and the fact that I had a plane to catch...

Takeaways

In talking to my Macedonian colleagues I was reminded of one thing: even though many people (including myself) have been referring to the Veles and Kumanovo operations as the proverbial "Macedonian teenagers" for years, in reality most of them weren't that young and some of them were (and still are) highly professional and organized, with most people having a clear goal of making money, either as a full-time entrepreneur or as a side hustle. The cast of characters of our Kumanovo investigation included a military officer, a policeman and a trucker, and as reporting from my hosts showed, one of the key figures in the movement was a local lawyer named Trajche Arsov who built a network of sites targeting American conservatives with the help of local acquaintances and even American freelance writers.

I was told that even today most Macedonians with IT skills are regularly approached by friends and acquaintances asking if they are interested in making some money on the side by helping with dodgy website projects. The days of the ad-filled Wordpress blog with stolen copy-pasted content promoted through Facebook posts is definitely over.

For one thing, it has become much harder for link posts to go viral on that platform (which is why these days you often see links being promoted in the first comment under a post). At the same time the advent of ChatGPT and other LLMs have made it much easier to generate "content" that doesn't get you dinged for plagiarism or copyright infringement and which is always written in perfect English.

The Veles and Kumanovo "clickers" are definitely still active, but they have expanded or moved their activities to other areas: online scams, crypto, dropshipping, AI slop and more. When X recently added a feature that would show the supposed location where an account was logging in from, several "American" political accounts were suddenly revealed to be from Macedonia. Some people may believe this will put a stop to these kinds of accounts but as we know from Meta's platforms (where this feature has existed for years) it barely makes a difference: the people falling for this kind of content generally don't check the "about" page before liking or sharing something.

The new X feature also showed lots of pseudo-American accounts were actually from places like Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, the Philippines or Nigeria. As one of our recent stories showed, Vietnam is currently a hotbed of websites and Facebook pages spreading AI generated stories about U.S. celebrities, athletes and politicians. So from the point of view of the Macedonians the international competition seems to be getting stiffer. But there is nothing new under the sun there: in 2018 Lead Stories found a fake news network run by a folk musician from Ghana and in 2017 we found a technically sophisticated network of sites in the Philippines that was specialized in celebrity death hoaxes.

If all of this shows anything it is that the need for fact checking remains greater than ever: somebody needs to keep pointing out that not all these things on the internet are actually true.

This is what fact checkers call a "prebunk."

A prebunk is like a debunk (another word for fact check), only it's an advance notice of an anticipated false claim. This article is intended to inoculate you from future outbreaks of a specific type of false claims about your favorite entertainment celebrities, sports stars, and politicians. We call this "Viet Spam" because the accounts spamming these are almost always managed from Vietnam, disguised as authentic local news. Artificial intelligence tools produce a constant flow of emotional fiction targeting the Facebook timelines of American and European fans. While this content -- which is also known as "AI slop" -- may not get viral levels of traffic, the ad income generated by thousands of AI-generated articles can be significant.

It's been spreading at epidemic-level speed in the months since Meta fired its American fact checkers (including Lead Stories) in early 2025, but we are still on the case. We have published more than 50 debunks (archived here) in recent months, targeting hundreds of these fake posts. Here, we share what we've learned about how to spot the symptoms and diagnose Viet Spam.

A Monkee's Tale

Let's start with the troubles of 80-year-old Micky Dolenz, the lone surviving member of the 1960s pop group The Monkees.

On June 15, 2025, the Country Roots Revival Facebook page announced "SHOCKING NEWS" about Dolenz. "35 Minutes Ago in Los Angeles, California, USA," the post (archived here) read, his wife announced Dolenz "has been rushed to the hospital after suffering a terrifying fall at his Los Angeles home.

Four days later, on June 19, 2025, the same Facebook page shared more "BREAKING NEWS" about Dolenz.
On July 8, 2025 - just 19 days after Micky's latest purported brush with death - the same Country Roots Revival page posted (archived here) more "BREAKING NEWS" that his wife had another tearful announcement. "27 Minutes Ago in Los Angeles, California, USA -- Donna Quinter, in Tears, Reveals That 80-Year-Old Micky Dolenz Was Rushed to the Hospital After a Tragic Accident Following His Visit to Texas Flood Victims."

But this was where a fact checker (this writer) coincidentally crossed paths with Dolenz. We were sitting near each other at a Calabasas, California, restaurant when the rock star was purportedly fighting for life in a Texas hospital. Dolenz was kind enough to fist bump his longtime fan and pose for a selfie.

There were no indications that he had recently suffered through a "terrifying fall" in his home, a sudden collapse on stage, or another tragic accident helping flood victims a thousand miles away hours earlier.

Dolenz was suffering from Viet Spam, but he found an antidote. He posted a video (archived here) message to his fans on his real Facebook fan page.

Dolenz message to fans:

Yes, it's really me - and I'm just fine! 😎
Lately there's been a strange wave of fake, AI-generated stories about me floating around online. So if you see one, report it to Meta and help spread the word that I'm alive, well, and still Monkeeing around.
I've been spending my summer getting some sunshine by the pool, tinkering in the garage, hitting the gym (sun's out, guns out!), and getting ready to kick off my Songs & Stories tour again next month.
So don't believe the clickbait. Believe the guy with the toolbox, the tour dates & the dumbbells.

This hasn't stopped the Vietnamese spammers from targeting Dolenz fans. As recently as October 29, 2025 - a day before this writing - another fake fan page managed from Vietnam posted (archived here) more "SAD NEWS" about him:

This time it was the Daydream Beat Facebook page, which we found to be associated with the Vietnam-based Country Roots Revival page.

The Motive Is Money

Getting Facebook users to click on a post can be financially rewarding. Each of the fake Dolenz posts included a link to a website that carried ads, The publisher is paid every time you click.

(Image source: Lead Stories screenshot of feji.io)

The Micky Dolenz false stories are just a tiny portion of what the Vietnamese-based operation is producing and placing on Facebook timelines around the world.

The list of celebrity targets in recent months include entertainers Dick Van Dyke, Adam Sandler, Johnny Depp, Sharon Osbourne, Bad Bunny, Brandon Lake, Kid Rock, Blake Shelton, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Pink, James Hetfield (Metallica), Luke Bryan, Eminem, Dolly Parton, Adam Lambert, Elton John, Barry Gibb, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Vince Gill, Paul McCartney, Patti LaBelle, George Strait, Stephen Colbert, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Jelly Roll, and Ringo Starr; sports figures Saquon Barkley, Sam Pittman, Cade Klubnik, Marc Marquez, Brian Snitker, Travis Kelce, Mookie Betts, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Brittney Griner; political figures Elon Musk, Mike Johnson, Rachel Maddow, Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth, Ivanka Trump, Jasmine Crockett, Charlie Kirk, Pam Bondi, and Karoline Leavitt.

The spammers typically prompt their AI-generators to create fictional stories that connect a long list of celebrities to a major controversy on social media. This results in dozens of nearly identical stories with celebrities names attached to identical quotes or actions.

The September 10, 2025, killing of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA (archived here), is a prime example. Lead Stories published a fact check article on September 13, 2025, addressing the claim that singers Dolly Parton, Adam Lambert, Elton John, Barry Gibb, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Vince Gill, sports figures Sam Pittman, Cade Klubnik, or Marc Marquez honored Charlie Kirk by calling for a moment of silence or by attending his funeral.

(Source: Lead Stories screenshots of various articles.)

These articles were all promoted by Facebook pages that targeted fans of the singers Elton John and college football teams.

(Source: Lead Stories screenshots of Facebook)

Each of these Facebook pages also have in common that they are administered from Southeast Asia, mostly from Vietnam, based on Meta transparency data.

(Source: Lead Stories screenshots of Facebook)

Spotting the Slop

These articles and posts follow a familiar pattern. Here are several red flags that indicate a post was created using artificial intelligence tools:

Manufactured Quotes: The quotes attributed to the celebrity don't match their typical speaking style and sound overly formal/dramatic.

Generic Emotional Language: Phrases like "captured the hearts of millions" and "cultural beacon of love and unity" are typical of AI-generated emotional content.

No Media Coverage: A major announcement or incident would be covered extensively by entertainment media outlets like CMT, Rolling Stone Country, or major news networks.

Vague Details: References to "a community event" and "recently" without specifics are red flags for fabricated content.

Anonymous Social Media Claims: Claims about fan reactions and social media spread without verification.

Duplicate Claims: An online search of a quote, or a fragment of a quote, on Google or Bing could reveal if the same claim is duplicated using other names.

.Another important step is a check of the transparency data that Meta provides on most Facebook fan pages. It will show the history of the page, which tells you when it was created and if the name has been changed. Many of the pages used to spread this spam are nearly new, created in the previous weeks. Some of the older pages have been renamed from something unrelated to the topic it now claims to cover. These are red flags.

This will also reveal the countries from where the pages are managed.

While a legitimate fan page could be administered from anywhere in the world, the country of Vietnam is the common factor that connects most of these fake celebrity posts.

This is not just an American problem. The Netherlands fact-checking organization Nieuwscheckers published an investigation (archived here) titled "Vietnamese pulp producers profit from mass-circulation of crime, sports and soap operas via Facebook." They tracked the massive junk news operation to Hanoi.

The Spanish fact-checking organization Maldita.es published its investigation (archived here) in July 2025, that concluded Vietnam was the most frequent producer of fraudulent Facebook pages that impersonated public transportation services in 746 cities and regions around the world.

Lead Stories teamed with Nieuwscheckers (archived here) in an investigation (archived here) that uncovered a Macedonian fake news network in January 2019

Facebook users can easily identify these types of accounts by accessing the transparency data.

(Image Source: Lead Stories screenshots of Facebook transparency reports.)

The epidemic of AI slop may not be subsiding anytime soon, but when you recognize it on your Facebook timeline, do your friends a favor. Call it out. Warn others. Share the knowledge.

Lead Stories is sad to learn of the announcement of the passing of Pablo Reyes Santiago (also via his Facebook account) and we offer our deepest condolences to his friends and family. Although he may not have realized it, Pablo was instrumental to the history of Lead Stories as a fact checking website.

He was so famous for his pranks and fake news websites that it netted him his own Wikipedia entry. Buzzfeed wrote about him and the sites he created or was connected to multiple times. One of those sites is the now defunct Huzlers.com, a website that published made-up stories about beefs between rappers or bizarre crimes and other events, but always with a satire disclaimer at the bottom.

One of those stories from 2015 involved the fictional murder and crucifixion of a rapper named "Slim Jesus" who was famous at the time for his hit "Drill Time". That story went massively viral and was picked up by the Trendolizer software Lead Stories had developed to detect trending content.

(Image source: screenshot of https://web.archive.org/web/20150914170917/https://www.huzlers.com/rapper-slim-jesus-killed-in-drive-by-shooting-and-later-crucified/)

At the time Lead Stories was just a few months old and mostly focused on reporting about anything that went viral, regardless of the topic, as you can see in this archived version of the site on the Internet Archive. Traffic and visitor count weren't that great yet, but it was a new site and we were still building an audience.

Since the Slim Jesus story was most definitely viral, my colleague Alan dashed off a quick article about it, reassuring fans that the rapper was still alive because he was still posting on Twitter. Notice that the headline of Alan's article opened with the words "Hoax Alert", which also became the name of an entirely new category on our site.

Search traffic to our site instantly went through the roof.

Lead Stories was the only site with the answer to the question many Slim Jesus fans were Googling for at the time. That gave us the vital insight to change the focus of what we should write about: we would no longer report on just anything that was trending but going forward our new mission would be to write about things that were trending but which weren't true.

That later became the slogan of our website and you can still see it on our home page today: "Just because it's trending, doesn't mean it's true". The "Hoax Alert" category would later be renamed to "Fact Check" but you can still see remnants of it in the URL structure of some of our stories.

In the years that followed we would write dozens of stories about things that had originated on Huzlers or Celebtricity, another of the sites Pablo was involved with. He also popularized the term "fauxtire" for his blend of stories that were "not quite The Onion, but not quite PBS". I even contacted him about some of them and after that he would occasionally call me up on Skype to chat and we ended up following each other on Facebook.

We lost touch over the years but it was through that Facebook page that I eventually learned about his passing. Just like when that other great internet prankster and "fake news" pioneer Paul Horner died, there's always this tiny sliver of hope it is all a joke.

Or, as he himself said on his Facebook page:

"Believe half of what you see and nothing you read online." - Pablo Reyes 🏹

On June 3, 2025 I was invited to make a statement during a public hearing at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium organized by the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield. The hearing was titled "Enforcement of the EU Digital Rulebook and political advertising in the context of foreign interference: understanding Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) and disinformation as systemic risks to electoral processes and public discourse".

My intervention can be watched in full here:

Text of my prepared remarks:

Fact checking is sometimes falsely presented as "censorship" when it is the exact opposite: it is journalism that adds information. The vast majority of work we fact checkers do is not determining what "The Truth" is but is simply pointing out what is provably false.

As a Belgian who has co-founded an American fact checking company that has worked for Meta and ByteDance, both in the United States and here I am quite aware of the different attitudes that exist about regulating speech.

Still, most citizens, including me, are rightfully suspicious of any laws that seek to hide or suppress information outside some well-defined exceptions like child pornography.

On the other hand, legally requiring information disclosure is much more widely accepted: nobody says food or cigarettes are being censored because there are laws that require ingredient lists or cancer warnings. So why should digital services be any different? Especially if they use algorithms to track people's emotions and beliefs to serve them content they haven't explicitly searched or asked for.

One of today's topics is "identifying gaps in legislation". When making rules it is important they are clear and unambiguous. Traffic law doesn't say "don't drive too fast", it says "don't drive faster than 50".

The DSA, for example, says:

Providers ... shall put in place reasonable, proportionate and effective mitigation measures ... ensuring that an item of information, whether it constitutes a generated or manipulated image, audio or video that appreciably resembles existing persons, objects, places or other entities or events and falsely appears to a person to be authentic or truthful is distinguishable through prominent markings when presented on their online interfaces.

But what is "reasonable", "proportionate" and "effective"? And what about "distinguishable" and "prominent"? And why make it ambiguous if an "item of information" is limited to being an "image, audio or video"? AI or human generated text can just as easily falsely present things that appear authentic and truthful and so can a false caption under a real photo.

Let's take another concrete example and look at the system of Community Notes on X, which Meta is also rolling out on their platforms in the U.S.

Under that system, a select group of users can add notes with context under posts where they think it would be useful. The other users in the program can then vote if they find the note "helpful" or "not helpful". They are not actually voting if the note or the post are true or not. If a note gets enough votes it becomes visible to all users. But the system also requires that there is consensus among enough voters who have previously voted differently on other notes.

To compare it to the European Parliament, it would be like having a rule that a vote can't pass unless at least some people in every political group have also voted "yes".

But that is not how facts work: the shape of the Earth doesn't change even if social media users can't find consensus about it.

This system slows things down and suppresses many notes with true information: it can take hours or days to collect enough votes to be able to calculate a consensus. And it seems designed to hide notes that would benefit one side in very partisan debates, regardless of the accuracy of the information.

Case in point, this post by President Trump seen by over 80 million people which contained clearly false information: it attracted over two dozen proposed notes that gathered thousands of votes but not a single note became visible because no consensus could be reached.

In practice, over 90% of proposed notes never become visible to the public and the ones that do often appear well after the false information has already been seen by vastly more people than will ever see the Community Note. According to research, besides links to other posts and wikipedia, the third-most cited source in notes are fact checks, which proves that in many cases the information is readily available but it gets hidden or delayed.

When notes are about philosophical, religious or political topics the algorithm must by necessity process, derive and store data about the voting user's views on those topics: how else can you calculate who disagreed with who? This is something explicitly prohibited by the GDPR outside a very narrow scope of exceptions. But even apart from that, is it a good idea to let private companies collect data about political beliefs based on social media behaviour? Even Meta once seemed to have doubts about that, given their reaction when Cambridge Analytica did it.

Also, can you really call a system "effective" if it can go down for almost five days and nobody notices the difference? This actually happened on X last week: due to a technical error no notes were shown under posts at all, even if consensus had been reached. But users were so used to not seeing Community Notes appear even under posts with clearly false information that hardly anybody noticed the difference.

The DSA also calls for "markings" that are "prominent" to make false information distinguishable. Under Meta's fact checking system images and videos labeled by fact checkers are covered up with a "screen" that implies fact checkers are responsible for hiding this content and offering users the chance to see it anyway. Users are also offered a chance to see the fact check but this takes more clicks and as a result only a very small fraction do.

Zero clicks to get irritated, two clicks to see false information and three clicks to see what is wrong with the information: is it any wonder some people don't like this?

That is one thing Community Notes on X are currently doing better: when a note does become visible, the information is presented right below the claim, in a similar font size and using neutral language.

Also note some other policies at Meta seem to be designed to avoid showing certain information to users even when it is available: Community Notes added by U.S. users are not displayed in Europe while European fact checkers are discouraged from labeling U.S. publishers (even though they are technically not banned from doing so).

In summary, if I could offer any advice:

Have clear definitions for "reasonable", "proportionate" and "effective"

For example: you fail if more than x percent of the y most viewed posts in a given period contained false information that was not labeled within z hours of time, or you didn't retroactively notify and inform users who saw such information. Speed matters:labeling false election information after the polls have already closed is not effective.

Have a clear definition of what "prominent markings" should look like.

A light grey font on a white background, fluffy language like "Imagined with AI", irritating messages like "according to fact checkers this is misleading" or information that only becomes visible after you click or tap something does not mitigate anything or inform anyone.

Explicitly put "free speech" in the legislation.

To head off censorship accusations or misunderstandings, rules dealing with misinformation should explicitly say they impose no obligation to delete, remove, hide, suppress, ban or cover anything just because it is false.

Keep the "lowest common denominator" in mind.

All platforms and search engines will observe what the lowest level of compliance is that their competitors can get away with. That will become the standard. The drone I own for hobby photography weighs exactly 249 grams because European drone legislation begins to impose certain restrictions the moment a drone weighs 250 grams or more, so manufacturers responded by making them lighter.

Surely measures protecting democracy shouldn't be lightweight.

Several users are currently reporting Community Notes on X have disappeared from their timelines. This is not by itself unusual, sometimes notes that are voted "helpful" by Community Notes users later get downvoted into "not helpful" status. But right now it appears even notes that have reached "helpful" status in the Community Notes user interface are not being displayed on the public version of the X posts they are attached to.

Take this post for example (archived here):

In the list of posts with notes that are "Rated helpful" in the interface used by Community Notes contributors, this is currently the top one:

But instead of a list of the helpful notes that would normally appear under it there is just a link to "See all notes on this post".

That link goes here, if you are a Community Notes contributor you can see it. That page clearly shows there is at least one note voted helpful:

However the note does not show up on the public facing version of the post as of this writing.

A sampling of the other posts on the "Rated helpful" tab shows the same pattern: no notes visible on the public posts but "helpful" notes being available behind the "See all notes on this post" link.

Community Notes users who click the three dots in the top right corner of a post and click the "Write a Community Note" button still get to see existing Community Notes on a post, indicating the notes are still there, they are just not being displayed publicly. It appears proposed notes also don't show up on public posts for Community Notes users at the moment, making it much harder for notes to acquire enough votes to allow the Community Notes algorithm to run its consensus algorithm.

Several users apparently reported seeing the same issue and complained about missing Community Notes, some as early as Saturday, May 24, 2025, three days ago:

ROME - That puff of white from atop the Sistine Chapel has long been a starting gun for conspiracists. With a new character in the story, they proclaim they alone tell the truth about dark forces playing pontifical puppeteers.

These stories humans tell to make simple sense of complex events move ever faster, now that there's money to be made by anyone with a social media account.

I was a teenager in Rome when John Paul I died in 2005, just 33 days after the Conclave that elected him. It wasn't long before I heard adult whispers that the pope had been murdered by Freemasons or by officials of the Vatican Bank, who supposedly needed Albino Luciani silenced forever.

The only fact-checkers we had at the time were historians working at the speed of peer-reviewed academic publishing and journalists working a little less slowly, in newsrooms steeped in a culture of verification built to prevent the pollution of the public square.

Conspiracists muttered their stories in small groups, sometimes gaining enough fame to put their theories between the covers of a book.

Conspiracy moves faster, always.

Standing in St. Peter's Square on Thursday with my teenage sons, I knew a new pope meant their smartphones would rapidly carry to them stories that had been through no process of verification and review.

Because social media monetizes attention, there would be no delays: As soon as someone could think of it, thousands or even millions would read it.

Conspiracists profit by striking first and once a story gathers attention, social media algorithms guarantee even more attention.

Conspiracy theorists and fabulists didn't wait for the conclave.

On the day of Francis' burial, April 26, Catholics in the Philippines were targeted by a fake documentary declaring that their countryman, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, had already been selected and would serve as Pope Luis I:

(Source: YouTube.com screenshot by Lead Stories.)

That country's award-winning fact-checker, Rappler, quickly published a debunk:

(Source: Rappler.com screenshot by Lead Stories.)

Similarly, videos in Spanish appeared prematurely online, declaring Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin had been elected before the final votes had been counted.

There's a difference between the automated platform-amplified stories and the idle chatter I tuned into in St. Peter's Square. The historic venue was crowded before 5pm CEST, an hour ahead of the expected "smoke."

There was a sense of excitement when the morning smoke, black for no winner, drifted up just two hours after the conclave had withdrawn behind closed doors. There were theories - that the early smoke meant a consensus was forming.

When, around 6:15 p.m., the white smoke started billowing from the Sistine Chapel chimney, where the 133 cardinals electors were gathered, loud cheers and clapping rose from the square. People around me had been ready to camp in St. Peter's Square for at least another day.

There was handicapping: Jerusalem Patriarch Pizzaballa, Parolin, and young Roman Cardinal Matteo Zuppi.

Then the central loggia of the Basilica opened for the announcement.

The silence was defining. More than an hour had passed since the white smoke.

"Habemus Papam," said the cardinal protodiacono, Dominique Mamberti, pronouncing the Latin name of the new pope: "Robertus Franciscus" and then his surname: "Prevost."

At the pronouncement of his papal name, Leon XIV, the crowd erupted with applause, but then went looking for information, which may be how conspiracy finds its audience: people want to know things.

Not everyone gathered at the Holy See understood exactly that name, and even fewer knew about the American cardinal who had just been chosen to sit on the Throne of Peter.

A lot of Googling started then, trying to figure out his age, birthplace, and - most of all - his position on some of the crucial issues the church will face: the unity of the global church, ecumenism, migrations, reproductive and gay rights, and how to be effective in the current war crisis.

When Prevost came out, smiling and blessing the crowd, his speech was not a simple greeting or blessing. He invoked "a disarmed peace and a disarming, humble and persevering peace," urging: "We must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges, dialogue, always open to receive like this square with open arms."

Prevost, Google searchers found, was a missionary in South America and grew up in Peru (he's a naturalized Peruvian). Part of his speech was delivered in Spanish as a greeting to his diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru. This, too, sparked some surprised, if not angry, reaction in the United States: Why didn't he speak any English if he is an American? Turns out, Latin is the official language of the Holy See, Italian is the working official language, and the Spanish part of the speech was a specific tribute to Peru. In this country, he arrived as a missionary as a young man. He spent ten years there as a bishop before being called by Pope Francis back to Rome as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, promoting him to the rank of Archbishop. He became a cardinal only last year.

Speculation starts with the name the pope chooses: looking at his predecessors or saints (as in the case of Francis) bearing the same name, one can at least foresee a programmatic stand.

The last pope Leon in history, Leon XIII, sat on the Throne of Peter at the end of the 19th century and gained fame for his commitment to workers' rights and attention to industrializing society's problems. He wrote the "Rerum Novarum", considered the first explicitly social encyclical in the history of the Catholic Church, and formulated the foundations of the modern social doctrine of the Church.

Immediately after Prevost's selection, misleading social media posts declared him a Republican. Commenters declared him a socialist.

I hope the world can start to learn the kind of skepticism for fast-spreading conspiracy theories Romans once reserved for legacy media: "Non mi fido di quello che dicono" ... "I don't trust what they say."

Until that takes hold, our team here in Rome is chasing the stories that arose with the smokey plume that announced the arrival of Leon XIV and checking theories that fill in the unknown and the unknowable.

The conclave to elect Pope Francis' successor is set to start on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. It is a centuries-old ceremony entrenched in secrecy and powerful rituals, which strikes the world's imagination. This year, 135 cardinals from 71 countries across the five continents (of which Pope Francis has appointed 108, and 12 come from countries that never had a cardinal before) are convening in Vatican City to pray, meet, get to know each other, and finally cast their ballot. Out of the 135, two have already announced that they cannot attend due to health reasons.

How the vote works

The ritual inside the locked Sistine Chapel has been a long-time subject of fascination. From May 7, everything will be shrouded in mystery after the cardinals enter the room adorned by Michelangelo's frescos of the Last Judgement.

Preparations for the conclave inside the Sistine Chapel (photo courtesy of Vatican Media)

The master of papal liturgical celebrations orders all individuals other than the cardinal electors to leave the chapel and pronounces the phrase "Extra Omnes" (everyone out). The chapel is locked and, according to the official rules, detailed in the Universi Dominici Gregis, "Throughout the election process, the cardinal electors must refrain from sending letters or engaging in conversations, including phone calls, except in cases of extreme urgency. They are not allowed to send or receive messages of any kind, receive newspapers or magazines of any nature, or follow radio or television broadcasts."

The Sistine Chapel is secured and prepared for the conclave. It will be closed to the public from Sunday, May 4th (photos courtesy of Vatican Media)

A two-thirds majority is required. If voting begins on the afternoon of the first day (as is the case this year), "there will be only one ballot. On subsequent days, two ballots are held in the morning and two in the afternoon. After the votes are counted, all ballots are burned. If the ballot is inconclusive, a chimney over the Sistine Chapel emits black smoke. If a Pope is elected, white smoke will billow out of the chimney."

The installation of the chimney above the Sistine Chapel (photo courtesy of Vatican Media)

Why May 7th?

The very date of the conclave sparked some of the first conspiracy theories. The American journalist Raymond Arroyo, on X, wrote: "The delayed start suggests that the Cardinals are asserting their authority over the Vatican insiders who were hoping for an expedited conclave." The idea is that some of the progressive cardinals closer to Francis wanted an earlier start to guarantee a quicker conclave. Not everyone agrees, pointing out that counting the 15 full days is set in the canon law and was fully respected in this case. But it is true that, in a motu proprio letter published on February 22, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI allowed the possibility of moving forward the date of the conclave:

"Nonetheless, the College of Cardinals is granted the faculty to move forward the start of the conclave if it is clear that all the Cardinal electors are present."

However, the date of the conclave was established on April 28th, 2025: that day, as stated in an email received by Lead Stories from the Holy See press office, "just over a hundred" out of 135 cardinal electors were present in the Vatican.

Raymond Arroyo's post on X on Aprile 28, 2025 (Source: X)

Front-runners attract conspiracists

"Who enters the conclave as a pope leaves as a cardinal," goes the popular saying, meaning that the favorite names circulating ahead of the election will not necessarily end up as the frontrunners or the ultimate chosen one. Past predictable elections proved this to be a false cliché, and there are high expectations on a shortlist of cardinals, even attracting odds-makers at betting agencies. It's unsurprising that some of these names are also the object of preventive criticisms, propaganda campaigns, and some old conspiracy theories. The current Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, who would be the first Italian to return to the Throne of Peter in 47 years, is no exception.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin (photo courtesy of Vatican Media)

Parolin and The Prophecy of Malachy

Playing with Parolin's first name, Pietro, some old apocalyptic conspiracy theories resurfaced, claiming that his papacy - if it happened - would be the last of the Church. It is called the prophecy of Malachy, a 900-year-old collection of obscure Latin mottos according to which the last name in the prophecy of the popes is "Peter the Roman", which has been interpreted as indicating the final pope at the end of the world: "Peter the Roman, who will nourish the sheep in many tribulations; when they are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The end."

Parolin and physical fitness?

Calumnies to eliminate undesirable candidates have always been present, and it was sufficient in the last conclave in 2013 to raise the matter of Jorge Mario Bergoglio's health. Before the election, rumors spread that he had only one lung, and some cardinals asked him about it at the conclave. It was not true: in 1957, when he was 21, he had had the upper lobe of his right lung removed because of three cysts, and the lung recovered by expanding to replace lost capacity, he explained to the author of a 2021 book "La salute dei papi".

Rumors about Parolin's health started spreading in the week ahead of the conclave. On May 1st, the American journalist Diane Montagna wrote on X (archived here):

According to multiple sources, yesterday afternoon an "alert" was triggered in the Vatican concerning the health of former Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who is considered one of the leading papal contenders. The 70-year-old Cardinal reportedly suffered a sudden illness due to elevated blood pressure & was attended to by a medical team that assisted him for an hour.

The source mentioned by Montagna is an Italian newspaper, Il Tempo, which briefly mentions the details, without indicating sources, at the end of an article, adding that "Parolin's health is not in danger". Something that Montagna forgot to add to her post, which gained traction in a very short time (over 1,6 million likes by May 3nd) and numerous comments pointing to the need to exclude him from the conclave, and some even connecting his alleged illness to his support in favour of Covid vaccines.

Diane Montagna's X post on May 1st, 2025 (Source: X)

On May 2nd, during a press conference, the Holy See Press Office director, Matteo Bruni, refuted the hypothesis of Cardinal Pietro Parolin falling ill, specifying that "no such incident had occurred." He also denied the involvement of medical or nursing staff.

The American dossiers

In her X profile, Montagna states that she's the executive director of The College of Cardinals Report, a website launched at the end of last year by the British journalist Edward Pentin to profile all the electable cardinals and rate their stance on several issues.

The site is highly critical of cardinals close to Francis, and also includes a not so favorable portrayal of Parolin himself (where past health issues are also mentioned), while it openly advocates for more conservative cardinals like the Hungarian Péter Herdo or the Guinean Robert Sarah.

Several news outlets (for example, here and here) have reported that US conservatives are exerting political pressure to influence and possibly reverse power dynamics in the Vatican. In 2018, several specialized websites reported about a US group called Better Church Governance, seeking more than 1 million dollars to create a detailed dossier about cardinals called "The Red Hat Report."

According to press reports, when presenting the project - aimed at improving governance and accountability within the Church - the organizers said, "we may not have had Pope Francis" had it existed at the time of his election.

One of the first targets was Wikipedia. The founder of the project, Philip Nielsen, said in a speech delivered in Illinois in 2021: "Francis was elected because of a lack of information", adding that his Wikipedia page was giving the wrong impression that he was a conservative. Nielsen then said, "I thought: why don't we get a bunch of academics, volunteer researchers, and improve the Wikipedia pages? It's kind of simple.".

In 2018, the website Crux reported an email exchange in which Nielsen made clear the project's targeting nature.

Crux reported that Nielsen wrote in an email:

For example, Cardinal [Pietro] Parolin, the very corrupt Vatican Secretary of State's wikipedia page is currently very benign, with no links to scandal included, despite the fact that he has repeatedly been linked with banking scandals ...We can change that... by the next conclave, he needs to be known, worldwide, as a disgrace to the Church. Our plan would be to make sure that his Wikipedia page shows Church Watchdog The Better Governance Group, names Parolin, 'Extremely Guilty of Abuse' etc. with a link to the report. At the same time, we would add all the pull-quotes from other sources that connect him to all the financial corruption, etc.

Parolin's current Wikipedia profile page doesn't include any of these statements.

Monsignor Cipriani visiting Pope Francis' lay in state site (source: Panamericana TV TikTok account)

According to multiple press reports (here and here), Cipriani was also seen "leaving the hall where general congregations are taking place, dressed in his cardinal attire despite having been banned from doing so." Crux, a reputable outlet on Vatican matters, reported: "Chilean clerical abuse survivor Juan Carlos Cruz, a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, called Cipriani's presence at pre-conclave meetings 'profoundly troubling.' 'While canon law prevents him from voting due to his age,' as Cipriani is over 80 and is therefore ineligible to vote in the conclave, 'his mere presence in these critical deliberations is a scandal and a deep offense to survivors and the faithful,' Cruz said."

The pedophilia scandals are, of course, prominent in these preparatory meetings. For example, in an email received by Lead Stories on April 28, 2025, Bruni related the content of that day's meeting, which "addressed issues of particular relevance for the future of the Church: the relationship with the contemporary world and some of the challenges that are highlighted, evangelization, the relationship with other faiths, the issue of abuse." The cardinals "spoke about the qualities that the new Pontiff will have to possess to respond effectively to these challenges." According to Universi Dominici Gregis, this week's "general congregations" must be attended by all cardinals "who are not legitimately impeded."

Though some lobbying is forbidden, there is maneuvering

Political maneuvering, as dramatized in the movie "Conclave," is, of course, part of the process. Pope Francis himself ended up at the center of rumors and gossip in both the 2005 and 2013 conclaves: after allegedly having refused a possible election in the run-up to the 2005 vote, he was accused of violating canonical rules by actively lobbying for his election in 2013. Both allegations are, at best, unfounded. On the first rumors that Bergoglio "refuted" the election in 2005, it was the pope himself who explained how the events unfolded. In the 2024 interview book "The Successor", with Javier Martínez-Brocal, Bergoglio recalled the conclave that elected Joseph Ratzinger, who took the name of Pope Benedict XVI. According to various reconstructions, Bergoglio was collecting enough votes to block an election that appeared to be scripted. In the book, Francis said that he felt "used" by a group of cardinals who wanted to block Ratzinger's election. Pope Francis said that a group of cardinals deployed a "full-fledged maneuver" by putting forward his name "to block Ratzinger's election and then negotiate for a different, third candidate." He said he had received 40 of the 115 votes from among the cardinal-electors in the Sistine Chapel -- "enough to stop the candidacy of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, because if they had kept voting for me, he would not have been able to reach the two-thirds needed to be elected pope." "They still did not agree on who, but they were on the verge of throwing out a name," he said in the interview book. Once he learned of the strategy, Francis said he told Colombian Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos not to "joke with my candidacy" and that he would not accept being pope if elected. "And from there Benedict was elected," he said.

Benedict's resignation added fuel to conclave conspiracies

The unique situations of Pope Benedict's resignation and the coexistence of two living popes were, of course, the source of many conspiracy theories, which had at their core the idea that Francis was not the legitimate successor to the throne of Peter.

The second conspiracy theory, about alleged plots to elect Bergoglio in 2013, started to spread after British journalist Austen Ivereigh's 2014 biography of Pope Francis, titled "The Great Reformer". He wrote about the existence of a "team Bergoglio" in 2013, lobbying for the Argentinian cardinal to be elected and even reaching out to him to ensure that he wouldn't decline the nomination, as he allegedly did in 2005. This time, Ivereigh recalls in an interview with the British paper The Telegraph, Bergoglio "said that he believed that at this time of crisis for the Church, no cardinal could refuse if asked." The Holy See spokesperson at the time, Father Federico Lombardi, denied the existence of such a plan. Amid the controversy that emerged, Ivereigh apologized on Twitter and promised to reformulate the phrasing in a new edition of the book, and ended with the statement: "The conclave chapter, read as a whole, makes absolutely clear JMB did nothing at all to cooperate in his election."

Austen Ivereigh's tweets from 2014 (Source: X)

The official rules forbid any planning or teaming up for or against a candidate, under penalty of excommunication, as stated in articles 81 and 82 of the 2013 revised text of the Universi Dominici Gregis:

81. The Cardinal electors shall further abstain from any form of pact, agreement, promise or other commitment of any kind which could oblige them to give or deny their vote to a person or persons. If this were in fact done, even under oath, I decree that such a commitment shall be null and void and that no one shall be bound to observe it; and I hereby impose the penalty of excommunication latae sententiae upon those who violate this prohibition. It is not my intention however to forbid, during the period in which the See is vacant, the exchange of views concerning the election.

82. I likewise forbid the Cardinals before the election to enter into any stipulations, committing themselves of common accord to a certain course of action should one of them be elevated to the Pontificate. These promises too, should any in fact be made, even under oath, I also declare null and void.

Scenes from the movie "Conclave" (Source: "Conclave - the film" Instagram account)

Conclave: the movie and reality

Perhaps one of the most talked-about topics ahead of the conclave is the 2024 movie "Conclave". After Pope Francis' death, when the election machine was put in motion, the movie experienced renewed success, with a surge in streaming viewers and heated debates on social media. While the intricate behind-the-scenes plots and backstabbing among the cardinals were fiction, some factual elements raise doubts.

There are, for example, scenes that don't match the established rituals: when the camerlengo, played by Ralph Fiennes, takes the "Fisherman ring" - symbol of papal authority - away from the dead pope's finger, he performs the ritual in private, inside the pope's room. This can't be true because the removal of the ring, which can't be transferred to the next pope, happens in a more open ceremony. According to the 2025 book "Conclave" by Jose De Jesus Aguilar and Javier Martínez-Brocal, "the cardinal camerlengo is in charge of annulling it, although the College of Cardinals must verify that he has done so. Usually, the camerlengo simply draws a cross on the relief, so it is 'annulled', but not materially destroyed."

The ceremony for the annulment of the Fisherman ring was held during one of the pre-conclave congregations on May 6, 2025. (Photo courtesy of Vatican Media)

The procedure is detailed in the Universi Dominici Gregis, where it is stated that the cardinals attending the conclave preparatory congregations, "shall arrange for the destruction of the Fisherman's Ring and of the lead seal with which Apostolic Letters are despatched."

Another powerful scene depicts the camerlengo breaking the seals to the pope's apartment. This is at best unrealistic, if not followed by serious consequences, including excommunication. Also, the camerlengo talking about something that was told him during confession could end in excommunication, according to canon law. The final twist (spoiler alert!) is probably the least credible. Participation in the conclave, and subsequent election to the papacy, is not allowed for cardinals so-called "in pectore", as depicted in the movie. Those cardinals have been nominated by the pope, who keeps their names reserved (the Latin "in pectore" expression means keeping something in your chest, just for yourself), mainly for security reasons connected with the area where they operate. However, their identity must be disclosed in order for them to attend the conclave and participate in the new pope's election. According to canon law, "Anyone who is promoted to the dignity of cardinal, if the Roman Pontiff has announced his creation, reserving the name in pectore, during this time is not bound by any duty and does not enjoy any of the rights proper to Cardinals."

My first memory of the passing of a pope is a traumatic one: someone murdered him.

Or at least, that's what everyone around me seemed to believe. I was just 13, but I had a sense that something was amiss: Albino Luciani had been Pope John Paul I for only 33 days, and he was relatively young, in his 60s.

The Vatican was secretive about the cause of his death, refusing to release a medical report. The absurdity of what happened (Italians have a saying: "ogni morte di papa" - "every time a pope dies," meaning a rare event) sparked all sorts of conspiracy theories, involving the Freemasons, the Vatican Bank, and foreign powers, as well as some extreme satire.

The front page of the fanzine "Il Male" remains a classic: "È rimorto il papa", roughly "The re-death of the pope". To this day, the death of John Paul I is treated as one of the Vatican's most obscure pages.

It turns out that the Holy See can evolve.

An effort for transparency

The first signs of efforts to fight disinformation with facts appeared after the death of John Paul II in 2005. Unlike his predecessor, a comprehensive medical report was released, detailing the procedures performed to confirm his death. This didn't prevent speculation about the lack of proper treatment towards the end, which the Vatican strongly denied. But it was a significant shift.

I remember that April 2, 2005 (Wojtyla passed right before Easter, a powerful parallel with Bergoglio) because I had just started dating the man who is now my husband. He's a producer for a US TV network, and I was in shock to see his house transformed into a 24-hour campsite for journalists from all over the world. It was where people came to vent, briefly relax, and have a drink during a gigantic logistical and journalistic operation, something that I had never experienced before. The demand for information about the death of a Pope mobilizes armies of journalists.

Family affair

Working as journalists in Rome, our family life has been marked by this constant, unspoken question: Will the pope die (or resign, another unpredictable turn of events) while we are on vacation, perhaps on the other side of the world? In that sense, the pope was very much a family member, someone whose health or well-being can change our lives for quite a long time.

Logistical preparations for the chain of events that the pope's death unleashes - some archaic and fascinating rites, like the Conclave reclusion in the Sistine Chapel, or the smoke's announcement, are unparalleled in the world - have also been a constant family topic at the kitchen table. And now here we are again: the morning of the announcement, we all jumped out of bed, incredulous. I drove my husband and our two sons, who had been hired for the day to transport and guard technical gear in St. Peter's Square, to the Vatican, where the police were already cordoning off the streets.

The author in St. Peter's Square on April 24, 2025, four days after Pope Francis' death (photo by Chelsea J. Carter)

We were slightly shocked. For weeks, we had been in trepidation for Francis' health, but after he was dismissed from the hospital, there was a sense of relief.

When Francis passed on April 21, 2025, the Vatican Press Office released a detailed report of the cause of his death the same night. It should be enough to slow the viral spread of online conspiracy theories.

But as an editor at a fact-checking agency, I know misinformation is social media's hardiest weed.

This pope was bound to be the focus of conspiracists.

Francis used to joke about people who "pray for his death". It's true that he wasn't widely popular within the Curia and in some of the more conservative environments, and this fueled all sorts of false scenarios. Rumors have been circulating for years that he has been dead for a long time and replaced by a doppelganger. Most recently, during his hospitalization, these conspiracy theories gained momentum.

The director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, delivering the updates on the pope's funeral plans in the Vatican press room on April 24, 2025. (Photo by the author)

First fact-checker at the Vatican

The other factor is the Vatican itself, a notoriously inscrutable institution. Conspiracy theories flourish in the absence of facts, even as I have seen the Holy See's procedures evolve toward transparency. They understand the danger of misinformation and were intrigued when Lead Stories requested accreditation to the press room last February. "You're the first fact-checking agency we've ever had," they told me.

The Holy See press badge. (Photo by the author)

Decades of living with preparations for this global story made the papacy part of my family's life. But Francis' death affected me differently.

I felt for him as a human being, for someone you care about. And this is a first, for me, but also for many people I know. This pope was different. Francis's personal touch, his easy-going nature (legendary are his random phone calls to regular folks, just to say: "Hi, this is the pope, how are you?"), his deep commitment to the most vulnerable and the environment made a real impact.

My mom, who is Catholic but strongly critical of the Vatican hierarchy, was in tears the day of his passing. "It's like losing an old friend, someone that I know would care about me, and I never felt this way about a pope before". She's 90; Francis was her seventh pope.

The other day, while strolling by my local piazza, the usual knot of elderly people basking in the sun was deeply engrossed in conversation. I usually expect to hear about the latest football infamy. But they were talking about the pope. "The doctors should have tied him to the bed. What is this nonsense of going around in the square in his condition?", referring to Francis's last appearance on Easter Sunday to bless the multitude in St. Peter's Square. That's a typical Roman way of expressing sorrow: you take it out on someone else, masking it as rage. But it's still painful.

Two days before Francis' funeral and six after his death, I went to St. Peter's Square on an assignment to debunk some conspiracy theories that were spreading: for example, that the upside-down crosses visible inside the Basilica are a sign of the devil (they are not: it's a symbol of Saint Peter who - according to contemporary writers - asked not to be crucified like Jesus because he wasn't worthy of Christlike martyrdom). My colleagues in the U.S. were debunking claims that JD Vance had killed Francis. Seemingly, no amount of transparency wipes out all conspiracy theories.

There is, as editors say, no substitute for being there, and I'm glad I was dispatched to The Holy See for this assignment, to close my chapter with this member of my family.

The thousands of people from all over the world lining up in silence to pay their respects had a powerful and emotional effect on me. You could hear all sorts of languages mixing up, the Polish tango dancer chatting with the Argentinian reporter about how much the pope loved that tradition. Proxy for me: the old guy in tears who just came out after seeing the coffin, recounting how he spent days in front of the Gemelli hospital praying for his health, and now prayed for him to rest in peace.

April 2 is International Fact-Checking Day, a global celebration of truth and accuracy. Like every year we want to take the opportunity to say that "Facts Matter". Usually at Lead Stories we are quite content to let the facts speak for themselves, but this year we have a much more eloquent guest speaker, world-famous actor Stephen Fry:

Some of our favorite quotes from his message:

"In an age where disinformation is weaponized, where platforms roll back their commitment to truth and fact checkers face increasing harrasment, we must stand firm."

"Fact checkers aren't the enemy of free speech. They are its guardians!"

"Before you hit that share button, pause, reflect, verify: the truth is worth it."

The International Fact-Checking Network also released its annual "State of the Fact-Checkers" report which you can read here, with the key takeaways being:

Key takeaways

• Financial sustainability remains the top challenge, with nearly 90% of fact-checkers concerned about funding.

• AI adoption is growing, with 30% of fact-checkers integrating it into workflows, while others remain cautious.

• Harassment persists, affecting 78% of fact-checkers, while cyberattacks target more than a third of organizations.

• Short-form video leads audience engagement, with TikTok and YouTube Shorts playing a key role. • Collaboration remains strong, with nearly 80% of factcheckers partnering with other organizations.

Flightradar24

Airplane tracking website Flightradar24 revived the supersonic Concorde aircraft and made one fly from London to New York, currently being tracked by over 30,000 people:

Oklahoma City Police

The cops in Oklahoma now have dogs driving police cruisers:

Van Gogh Museum

The joke of the Van Gogh Museum was a piece of art:

🚬🔥 We regret to inform you that the museum will be closed today. Van Gogh's pipe actually started smoking, and we're still figuring out how to explain this to the fire department. 😜 #AprilFools pic.twitter.com/ABXqQEzmLP
