The world runs on time – and so should our energy.
What is LDES?
Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) is a technology that stores energy and then dispatches it as power, heat or cooling for extended periods of time, ranging from 8 hours to days, weeks or seasons. It takes various forms, including chemical, thermal, mechanical and electrochemical storage.
LDES is critical for operating a secure, reliable, affordable and clean energy system.

why LDES Council
The LDES Council is the only organisation uniting global stakeholders under a shared mission to scale long duration energy storage in countries, regions, provinces and states. Our diverse membership brings together 60+ members from over 24 countries.
The LDES Council builds the case for long duration energy storage by amplifying the collective expertise of our members and partners – transforming knowledge into action, and action into local and global impact.
LDES Provides Reliability and Flexibility
Balances electricity generation and consumption over extended periods, meeting demand peaks and providing power when there is no sun or wind.
Helps electricity networks manage peaks in demand or generation, reducing need for peaking plant, transmission and distribution capacity – saving consumers money.
Provides 24/7 clean heat and power to sectors across the economy, enabling customers to avoid higher cost periods and grid charges.
Reduces curtailment of renewables when generation is higher than demand or grid capacity, and increases revenues by storing power until less abundant and higher cost periods, and by enabling the sale of ‘firm’ power to businesses.
Provides backup power during extreme events and can restart the grid when there’s a blackout.
Provides essential system services that help keep the lights on – regulating frequency (the rate at which power oscillates), providing inertia (resistance to sudden changes in demand or generation), energy arbitrage and managing voltage levels.
Stores vast amounts of energy for days, weeks, or even seasons – keeping power and heat flowing.
Enables local grids to run securely, for example in remote areas, or places with unreliable regional grids.
What We Do
By promoting real projects already in motion, pooling intel and knowledge, developing best practice solutions and sharing data-driven insights, we help scale LDES solutions today – educating policymakers, investors, utilities and industrial customers, and advocating for the right policy frameworks to accelerate deployment, so that LDES can deliver value for consumers and sectors across the economy.

Our Powerful Member Ecosystem
From influencing policy shifts to forging first-of-their-kind partnerships, the LDES Council helps members from all industries transform collaboration into real-world deployment.

Synchronizing the Energy System for the Future
Through cross-sector collaboration, we enable flexible, resilient and cost-effective storage technologies that strengthen energy security, unlock market opportunity and accelerate the shift to clean power and heat/cooling.
We help stakeholders navigate tradeoffs, understand cost dynamics, and identify deployment potential – making it possible to meet both global and local energy needs in an ever-changing world.
