Drunk driving in India is a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. For a first offence, a person can face imprisonment of up to 6 months or a fine of up to ₹10,000, along with possible suspension of their driving licence. For a repeat offence, the punishment becomes stricter, with imprisonment of up to 2 years and a fine of up to ₹15,000. In cases where drunk driving leads to an accident causing injury or death, additional criminal charges may apply, leading to more severe penalties.
