Is marital rape a recognized crime in India?

Generally, no. Under the Indian penal system (Exception 2 to the rape laws in the IPC/BNS), sexual intercourse by a man with his own wife is legally not considered rape, provided the wife is not a minor (under 18 years of age). This exception is highly controversial and is currently facing constitutional challenges in the Supreme Court.
