Can you be jailed without a trial just because the police think you might commit a crime?

Yes. Under Article 22 of the Constitution, India allows for "Preventive Detention." A person can be detained for a specified period (usually up to 3 months, extendable via an advisory board) without a trial if the state believes they are a threat to national security or public order.
