Can you be punished for a crime committed in self-defence?

No. The Right of Private Defence (historically Section 96 IPC, now under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) states that nothing is an offense which is done in the exercise of the right of private defence, provided the force used is proportionate to the threat.
