What is the rule on accepting gifts from clients?

Under Bar Council of India rules, lawyers must be very careful when accepting gifts from clients. Small, token gifts given out of respect or gratitude may be acceptable, but only if they do not influence the lawyer’s professional judgment. Anything expensive, valuable, or given with the intention of getting special treatment is not allowed.

A lawyer must never request gifts, expect gifts, or allow gifts to affect their advice, decisions, or conduct in a case. Accepting costly items, money, or favours can be seen as unethical and may create a conflict of interest. It can also damage the trust and fairness required in the advocate–client relationship.

If a client offers a gift that seems too valuable or inappropriate, the lawyer should politely refuse it to maintain transparency and professionalism. Advocates must always keep their work strictly fee-based and avoid any form of personal benefit that may look like influence or reward beyond rightful fees.

Overall, gifts from clients should be handled very carefully—only small, harmless tokens are acceptable, and anything that affects independence or integrity must be refused to follow Bar Council ethics.
