Bribery in elections is treated as a serious offence. If a candidate or any person offers money, gifts or benefits to influence voters they can face fine, imprisonment which may extend up to 1 year or more or both. The candidate may also be disqualified from contesting elections. In simple terms trying to buy votes is illegal and can lead to both legal punishment and loss of political rights.
