In India, animal cruelty is punishable under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, where a first offence may lead to a small fine, and repeated offences can result in a higher fine and up to 3 months’ imprisonment. For serious acts like killing or severely injuring animals, stricter punishment is given which can include imprisonment up to 2–5 years, fine, or both.
