All-Star shortstop's extension worth $80 million

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Michael Young will remain a Ranger until he's not so young anymore.

The club and its All-Star shortstop agreed early Thursday morning to a five-year contract extension worth $80 million that will make Young the face of the organization. Two sources close to the negotiations said an agreement had been reached and only the formality of signing the paperwork remained.

The contract will keep Young, 30, with the Rangers through 2013. The club will pick up its $5 million option for 2008, then guarantee five years at $16 million per season.

Young will essentially have no-trade protection for all but a two-month window early in the 2011 season. The first three years of the deal carry no-trade protection. Young will have nine years and 134 days of major league service at the end of the third year. Once he reaches 10 years, he'll have "10 and five rights," which will allow him to veto a deal since he has had 10 years of service and the last five all with the same club.

If he completes the full deal, Young will become the most tenured player in Rangers history. Young has 905 games with the club. He needs 670 more to surpass Rafael Palmeiro for the most in team history. He’d need to average fewer than 100 games over the next seven seasons to break the mark.

The Rangers had decided after last season they wanted to extend Young, but because of free agency and other issues, they didn’t get around to serious talks until early this month.

After initial offers were discarded, the sides focused on two possible deals. One would have been for five years at $15 million per season, while Young wanted a sixth year. The sides agreed to do away with the sixth year but add $1 million per season to the value of the contract.

Young has hit at least .300 with at least 200 hits for each of the last four seasons and has been an All-Star each of the last three years. He has gained a reputation as perhaps the game's most dangerous clutch hitter. He won the 2006 All-Star Game MVP award with a game-winning hit. Young led the AL last year with a .412 average with runners in scoring position en route to a career-high 103 RBIs.

His run production will probably increase this season, when he moves from the No. 2 spot in the batting order to No. 3.

Nearly a week ago, Rangers owner Tom Hicks said he wanted to get something done with Young but said if the sides didn't agree soon they'd table the talks until after the season. Young said he didn't want to let contract talks interfere with his preparation for 2007.
