About us

Land & Carbon Lab was founded by World Resources Institute and the Bezos Earth Fund to develop breakthroughs in geospatial monitoring to help governments, businesses and communities power solutions for sustainable landscapes.

We are a network of researchers, technologists and engagement experts working together to build a comprehensive, open access monitoring system that will provide unprecedented transparency about what is happening to the world’s land anywhere on the planet, at any time.

By using artificial intelligence and machine learning to synthesize troves of satellite data, we provide decision makers with the information and insights to restore degraded landscapes, protect forests and nature, and produce food and other land-intensive commodities more sustainably.

And we don’t just create data — we’re partnering with diverse groups such as corporate leaders, policymakers, Indigenous Peoples and local communities to ensure real world impact.

Our principles

Our work is guided by three core principles

  • Commitment to transparent and open-access data, research and technology
  • Driving collective progress through collaboration not competition
  • Recognition of the urgency of our mission
