<lj:music>Amorphis - Silver Bride</lj:music>

So yeah, I'm still alive. The main reason I haven't been posting is because I'm feeling guilty over not having accomplished much of anything since graduating last August. While technically I've been looking for a job, my choices are pretty limited (Greenville and Commerce) until I manage to get my driver's license (yeah, yeah, I know). I did apply for an entry-level thing at Raytheon (defense contractor my dad works for), but I never got called back for an interview. The position wasn't really interesting to me, but it was something my dad had heard about from the person doing the hiring for it, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I haven't been able to find much since then. Either people want job experience or specialties I don't have...at least for local stuff. I've seen plenty of good jobs farther away, heh.

I turned 27 on May 1st. I don't feel like I should be that old yet.

I've been updating on Twitter slightly more regularly than on LJ, probably because it takes less time and most of the things I want to post don't require much space.

My brother and I finished Buffy a couple days ago. We've still got the last season of Angel to watch, but I'm kinda sad over it regardless. Though now we can go back and watch the commentaries/special features without fear of spoilers, heh. So many completely amazing episodes scattered throughout that series though. The Lost finale was completely evil, the Office finale was hilarious and heartwarming, House was pretty good, and I'm waiting until 24 is over to finish it off. The second half of the Dollhouse season was great -- definitely check it out if you gave up during the first five episodes -- and I'm glad to hear it was picked up for the fall. We have the first season of BSG also, but haven't gotten around to watching past the first episode.

Listening to the new Amorphis for the first time right now, enjoying it so far, but I think I still like Silent Waters better. That album is so catchy.

Currently reading Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, about halfway through and enjoying it. Mostly I just wish George R.R. Martin would finish the next Song of Ice and Fire book, dammit.

Still playing WoW, mostly for the three nights of raiding a week (pretty much the only fun thing in the game for me anymore) and keeping in touch with friends, more than anything else. Working through Professor Layton and the second Phoenix Wright game, both are great.

Think that's about it for now. Yeah, I really am just that boring, haha.

I've had a couple things by them for a long time now, but must've not been paying attention at all in previous listens. Great melodies and atmosphere.

Made a 94 on the first of two major speeches, which is good since each one is 25% of the final grade. Pretty sure I can make at least a B in the class now, maybe an A. Which still seems kind of ironic, considering how quiet I am normally, haha.

In WoW news, arena season 4 started yesterday, so I finally replaced my last blue with the season 2 offhand. Latro's is way better for combat swords than it has any right to be, but I was getting tired of all the "why u using a blue swrod in ur offhand? lololololtard" comments from random people.

Need to register with the university's Career Services department soon, 'cause I'll probably need all the help I can get finding a job this fall, heh.

    <lj:music>Stormlord - Mare Nostrum - 02 - Neon Karma</lj:music>

Since I obviously need more things to waste my time on, I signed up for Twitter. valfather is the username, feel free to follow me.

Taking speech and weight training during Summer I, both are going okay so far. I'm almost sort of enjoying speech, which is pretty surprising. It's a really small class (6 people) so we get shorter class times and less pressure since we're not talking to a huge group. Weight training is a lot more work with this instructor than the one I took it with before (had to drop partway through 'cause of too many absences, heh)...'bout halfway through the class now, and I'm not getting as tired/sore after each class as I was at first.

I applied for graduation the week before last. Just these two classes and a psych class in Summer II with the easiest professor I've had in the entire university and I'm done. I'm not sure whether that's really sunk in yet or not, heh.

Slowly working through the first Phoenix Wright game...I think I'm nearing the end of Case 3. I love it...makes me wish I had more DS games though.

Also slowly working through A Feast of Crows by George R.R. Martin. I wish he had included all the characters in this half of the book, only a couple of my favorites are in this one.

New Opeth, Keep of Kalessin, and Stormlord albums are completely excellent.

The tremolo picked riffs typical of black metal are present, but the feeling and intent of the songs is much more optimistic, often even happy. Neige, the French black metaller behind the project, describes the album as a journey into the self-invented dream world he's found solace in since childhood. Memorable melodies, soft vocals, and a refreshing atmosphere. Recommended to all!

Amesoeurs - Ruines Humaines (EP) - 03 - Faiblesse Des Sens
(France, 2006, 9.24 MB)
Another French band Neige is involved with, Amesoeurs tries to capture the frustration they feel at the depersonalization, depression, and fear produced by living in modern urban society. Blending black metal, shoegaze, post-punk, and new wave, this 3-track EP is quite interesting. The song here is the most accessible they've produced so far, a darkly beautiful number with female vocals that starts out slow and picks up as the track winds on. Sounds like something you might hear in a foreign indie film.

Bonobo - Days to Come - 11 - Recurring
(London, 2006, 7.32 MB)
As with pretty much everything else I've heard from the Ninja Tune label, this is a delicious album. They started out as a doom metal project that bored me to tears, but eventually replaced the lead guitar with a sax player and downtuned the bass to create something entirely different and wholly memorable. Bass, drums, synths, and sax...perfect for listening in the dark on a rainy night -- so perfect, in fact, that the last track of the album even adds in its own rain sounds as a backdrop.

Baroness - The Red Album - 01 - Rays On Pinion
(United States, 2007, 14.1 MB)
Progressive sludge metal/rock from Georgia, these guys have catchy-as-hell riffs and guitar harmonies as well as a singer another reviewer quipped sounds like a "pissed-off lumberjack". Thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end, a highly recommended record.

Primordial - To The Nameless Dead - 03 - As Rome Burns
(Ireland, 2007, 17.8 MB)
At the risk of oversimplification, this is Braveheart metal. Irish melodic black metal with a pagan politico-historical bent, meant and able to be taken seriously, soaring and inspired clean vocal work, and songs that stay in your head long after the disc has stopped spinning. Every track here is a total winner, it was tough to pick just one, but I love the epic feel of this one.

Septic Flesh - Communion - 08 - Persepolis
(Greece, 2008, 9.88 MB)
Brilliant orchestral arrangements, electronically processed gutteral vocals that actually sound evil, and crushing riffs abound on the best album this Greek death metal band has put out yet. Taking inspiration from mythology, history, and other sources, the subject matter of the album is a large part of the appeal for me. The track here is a dramatization of what is essentially the prequel to 300, the sacking of Persepolis by the Greeks. Other songs tackle Lovecraft, Anubis, the tower of Babel, Narcissus, and more. Well worth a couple of listens to see if it grows on you as much as it did on me.

Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge - 02 - Captain Morgan's Revenge
(Scotland, 2008, 11.2 MB)
Pirate-themed power metal. Complete cheese, but totally awesome. If you can't enjoy this you're not my friend.

Y'know, it's easy to forget how totally awesome electricity is until it goes out. It died last night, came back on for about 20 or 30 minutes this morning, and then died again until around 1 PM -- so far, so good *crosses fingers*. We started a fire in the fireplace and slept in the living room last night, heh.

The super short version of all the posts I haven't made lately: aced two classes last semester and passed the others, got some stuff for Christmas, and the paid time on my WoW account expired about a week ago. I change my mind every 10 minutes about whether or not I will get the expansion and reactivate my account. It's not so much the game itself I would miss, but a handful of really great friends I've made and the fun times we would have exploring all the new areas and such.

In the meantime I've been playing FFXII, which is a decent enough substitute right now, but that may change once I've completed the main storyline and all the sidequests. As great as Balthier is, I almost think I like Basch more at the moment. I don't think I'm that far in yet, as I just got to the entrance of Raithwall's Tomb.

I've been trying contacts instead of glasses for a little over a week. Most days they do fine and are completely great, but the days where they don't they are a huge pain in the ass. My parents had problems tearing enough when they tried them, but that doesn't seem to be the case with me. Still, I think I'll probably just stick with glasses unless these turn out to be cheaper before insurance (which I won't have after I turn 25 in May, dangit).

Finished season 2 of House a while back, haven't started on 3 yet. Totally dropped off on watching Lost several months ago, not sure when/if I'll pick it back up. Season 6 of 24 starts tonight, woohoo!

Taking more classes this semester than I usually do...I should be able to graduate next Fall as long as I pass everything from here on out and there aren't any scheduling conflicts. The latter is probably the bigger worry than the former.

This CD is one of the best things I've heard in the last year, maybe longer. A must have if you are at all a fan of trip hop.

Sitting in front of a computer all summer + having taekwondo 4 days a week this semester = ow. Either that or get replacement legs made of metal. The latter is probably the cooler option of the two.

Finished rambling out my first technical writing assignment, we'll see how it goes. <lj:music>M. Ward - Transfiguration of Vincent - 03 - Vincent O'Brien</lj:music>

So, I'm finally going to start posting again. I haven't been doing so lately just because my day-to-day activities this summer would be incredibly boring to read about and I haven't accomplished anything monumentally important. Unless you consider playing lots of World of Warcraft important. Most of you probably don't.

Anyway, this semester should be pretty fun, since I have three great instructors and an easy one I've had before. My classes at the moment:

PSY 404 - Organizational Psychology
CSCI 233 - COBOL Programming
PSY 403 - Development of Modern Psychology
PSY 310 - Psychology of Diverse Populations (Capstone)
ENG 341 - Technical Writing

I'm fairly sure I'm going to drop 310 because it's an 8:00 class, the course material is pretty much the same as what I had in Social Psych, and there are probably capstones out there more relevant to my major. I've looked over and over again for something else to take instead, but the only classes I still need are either at the same time as one of my current classes or are being taught by professors that don't appear to be very good (hurrah for Rate My Professors).

I'm hoping to get involved in taekwondo again...dropped by the first class yesterday and got some info on everything. I'll probably attend the university class for review and to maybe help out a little and also go to the night practices that start next week. At least I can finally pick up my camo belt and certificate, heh.

I'm slowly working my way through George R.R. Martin's A Storm of Swords. Been meaning to read it for a long while but hadn't gotten around to it until now. I have the new one ready to read once I finish this one.

I'm caught up to the current seasons of Lost and 24...just waiting for late September and January to roll around for the new seasons, respectively. Finished the first season of Deep Space Nine, currently going through the first season of X-Files.

Not much new on the music and movie fronts at the moment.

Still playing WoW, still addicted...though now raiding is pretty much the main source of fun in the game. We've a got a great group of people, almost all adult or at least 18+ so there's very little drama, great teamwork, and a lot of joking around in vent. We went from being almost complete MC noobs to having everything up to Domo on farm status in two weeks. We tried Ony for the first time last Saturday and got her to 38% first try...weren't as lucky on subsequent attempts, but still. This sounds like gibberish to most of you, but hey. :)

I need to go get the mail, refill my drink, and get an early start on an assignment for technical writing, so that's it for now.

Happy birthday zarkia!

I freely admit to having caught myself in the middle of stupid thoughts, so this wasn't totally uncharted territory for me, but I got something out of it nonetheless. I especially recommend reading the two interviews linked at the bottom of the press page of her main site (mousing over the squares constitutes the site's navigation system) for added context and additional material to mull over.

I will be surprised if I can move tomorrow.  Still, in some twisted and totally illogical fashion it managed to be fun all the same.  It hit everyone hard, but probably me worst of all 'cause I'm overweight and about as out of shape as you can get.  Eventually it won't be so bad, but right now... ;_;

At least we got our orange belts, certificates, and patches today. Well, those of us who signed up with ATA anyway.

Aside from karate and history, I am woefully behind in my classes. Woo!

Although I haven't updated in four weeks, I have been reading everyone's entries and commenting occasionally. As it turns out our belt test was postponed until last Thursday, during which everyone who was able to test passed. Mr. Hill, our instructor's instructor and a totally awesome dude, was there and mentioned several people including myself as having done very well in regards to our one-steps. Our instructor wants me to go to the tournament this Saturday, but I can't make up my mind. On the one hand I'd like to actually get out and show some initiative for once...on the other it would suck if my knee gimped out at the wrong moment (which it's still doing from time to time). Even if I don't compete I might go anyway just to cheer on the five or six students from our class that are going. Also, I'm registered with ATA now. Even if we can't get an actual class set up to count as our second PE credit she'll be able to work with us one-on-one informally as long as she's teaching here.

I don't have much to say about my other classes and I doubt anyone is really that interested anyway. I'm doing well in one, okay in a couple others, and not so well in another. Suffice it to say that my procrastinating habits are going to get me again if I don't pick up the pace soon. The good news is that everything is salvageable. The trick is that I actually have to do that instead of just saying I will. :|

In WoW news, my priest is 46 and I have a rogue that I love dearly that hit 30 last weekend. My two best friends on the server hit 60 recently, so I'll probably try to work on my priest exclusively from now on in order to actually start grouping with them again. Since I cleared my talents and moved to a full shadow spec soloing is even easier now than it was before.

I'd like to make this journal into more of a journal instead of just a "what I've been doing lately" type of thing. Partially because I just don't do that much (and thus don't have much reason to update) and also because I've been noticing how...non-social I am. Not anti-social, as I like being around people and hearing what they have to say, just...failing to interact with anyone. I know it's entirely in my head and not something else 'cause I'm almost a chatterbox around my brother and to a slightly lesser extent the rest of my family. Put me in a group, however, and I just don't have much to say. No idea what it is.

Hm. Anyway, I'm gonna do my economics reading and then get some sleep.
