Meme!

I haven't done a meme in years, I kinda miss them, and this one's short. Borrowed from scribblemoose.

A - Age: 31
B - Birthday: September
C - Crush: dozens, but at this particular moment? In real life: JJ Feild. In fictional life: Oliver Queen in all incarnations.
D - Do you dance?: Nope, and it's one of the greatest tragedies of my life *sob* I can't hear/recognize or hold rhythm.
E - Easiest person to talk to: My brother and A.
F - Favourite colour(s): ALL of them. I used to like earth colors the most, and dressed mostly in black and brown and green and beige... but in the last couple of years it's like a rainbow exploded in my wardrobe and in my flat in general. TBH I like it much better this way.
G - Glitter or neon: Neither, unless we're talking nailpolish, then glitter please.
H - Hair colour: Dirty blonde/dull brown, depending on the season.
I - Ice Cream: My local chain of ice cream shops makes the best all-natural flavours. Mmmm carrot ice cream.
J - Job: I do anything and everything Mr. Stark requires.
K - Kickboxing or Karate: Meh.
L - Los Angeles is: my favourite submarine class :D
M - Movie: I'll go with "most recently watched" - the new Robocop. I liked it more than I'd thought I would.
N - Number of Siblings: One brother.
O - One Phobia: A mild case of pyrophobia. I'm okay with open flames, but I dread hidden fires I can't see or predict. I recently found that our local fire dept has an online database of current interventions, so that helps calm me down when I'm away from home and get into a panicky "what if I something happened, what if my flat burned down" mode.
P - Part of your personality?: I fret.
Q - Quote: I don't like quotes
R - Reason to smile: I just ate a jam doughnut and there's a bottle of wine waiting for me, nom nom nom.
S - Season: I love winter. Unfortunately it seems my area was one of the few in the country that didn't get any winter this year. It snowed maybe once, for half a day. It makes me feel restless.
T - Time for bed: Preferably on the same day I wake up, but I rarely manage to get to bed before midnight.
U - U love someone?: My family. Don't really know love other than familial.
V - Vegetable you hate: Aubergine.
W - Worst Habits: I worry too much. I procrastinate too much. The two are actually unrelated.
Y - Year you were born: 1982
Z - Zoo Animal: Otters.

I sometimes wonder when I'm going to grow up

Good news of the day for me(*) is that, after a year of absence, my favourite taxi driver that I have a massive crush on came back to the taxi corporation I use daily(**). Why yes, I'm a 31-year-old woman hopelessly crushing on a possibly 50-year-old driver /o\ But he's so nice, has a deep sexy voice, a good taste in music, and his political views aren't actually crazy (I find most taxi drivers are sort of... weird). Despite his age he dyes his hair blond and wears it spiky (and looks good with it, dammit), so he's what I imagine a retired Ray Kowalski could have been!

*) It's bad news for him, actually. He had a steady job with regular hours, but he was made reduntant, and to top it off he totalled his car - a lovely silver Mercedes with a tiny Jolly Roger on the antenna! - so, as he said to me, he was lucky to have friends at the corp who took him back and sold (or loaned, I didn't quite get it) him an old but serviceable car.

**) A remedy for anxiety, exhaustion and depression that I put a lot of thought into, and it's been totally worth the money. I don't move around town a lot, mostly to work (I carpool from work) and it's way more convenient and less stressful than public transport, actually pretty cheap in my town compared to others, and way cheaper (and less stressful) than renewing my driving licence and buying/using a car.

Smallville: ten years later

Copied from an anon meme a.k.a. the last place on LJ that actually lives.

--

I'm rewatching all of Smallville - actually I'm mainlining it as if my life depended on it - and I just googled "when does Jonathan Kent die" because I can't stand his sanctimonios shit anymore. Fortunately, as I'm at the end of season four, it'll be soon. (ETA: he finally died but he keeps coming back. WHY?!).

I'm surprised at how differently I see the show this time round. Ten years ago Chloe was my favourite character, I loved Lex, Lana and the Kents, and didn't like Lois. I shipped Lex/Chloe and Lex/Lana.

This time? The Kent family relationships seem so unhealthy (when Martha asked Jonathan for permission to work outside the farm I was this close to throwing something at the screen). I hate, hate, hate Jonathan. He and Martha are so intrusive, their style of parenting is so heavy-handed and smothering, they are so thight-knit and stuck in their small cirklejerk, just watching it makes me feel suffocated.

But! I stan for Lionel so much it scares me. I find him and his voice so unbelievably hot, and I want to ship him with everyone, especially Chloe.
Lex is fine, his voice is as fantastic as I remember, but he's too much of a woobie, and the plotlines are ridiculous.
I loathed Chloe for three seasons (though I sort-of like her now), Lana bores me to death, and I can't get enough of Lois. I might be in love with Erica Durance. I want a Lionel and Lois show.

(Huh, I just realized how much aural-oriented I am. This is why I couldn't get into Tom Hardy: why I love his looks, his voice is so not what I expected.)

I've never seen all of Smallville actually. At the beginning I relied on TV broadcasts, sporadic downloads in horrible quality and postage-stamp size (early 2000s, yay), I might have even absorbed some episodes as transcripts. Then I watched regularly for some time, then sporadically, seen some episodes only because James Marsters was in them (while in my Buffy phase), and I can't remember the point where I finally stopped watching. Might have been season six or seven? Maybe eight, but still, I've got a few seasons yet to go that are not quite new to me. I wonder how I'll feel about Ollie when he shows up, given that now I love Arrow - Stephen Amell is it for me.

Good news day

Today I had my third ultrasound in the span of a year, and the alien currently inhabiting my right breast was yet again deemed to be Not Cancer. Next ultrasound is scheduled for February; if the alien grows, it might become A Thing That Should Be Removed Under Local Anaesthetic but, to be honest, Not Cancer is all I care about.

Well, I also care about and am grateful for the fact that private ultrasound practices exist, and that their prices is something I can afford, so I don't have to wait months for an appointment covered by the Polish equivalent of NHS. Especially since I was supposed to have the alien checked out in September, but life happened, and then it was never a good time to do it (you know, that 100% typical stupid thing, when you think that not going to a doctor is good because at least you won't have to deal with any bad news) and suddenly it was December. But it's done now, finally.

Seriously, if you can (afford to) do it, go get your important bits checked out, sooner rather than later. Breast ultrasound is painless, and for young women it's the most effective way of detecting cancer and other abnormalities. Self-exams are important, too, but if your breasts are 'lumpy' by design, like mine are, ultrasound is the only way to be sure.

It's alive!

In an attempt to revive this thing, a post. In points, because it's easier this way :P

1. I sent the first batch of Christmas cards today \o/ including cards to mcalex22, moogle_tey and viridian5 (priority post, so they better arrive this year, dammit, not some time in February).

2. Anyone else up for a card? I didn't send any last year, so this year I want to make up for that :)

3. I've been thinking about why I haven't been posting much here. Apart from the usual excuses of work, family commitments, intermittent worsening of depression and/or lack of any energy whatsoever, the main reason seems to be that with each passing year I can feel my English regressing, so it's getting harder to put my thoughts into words. When I look at the posts I wrote in college, it's like a completely different, much more fluent person wrote them. It's not that surprising - I haven't had a real conversation in English in years, haven't had to write essays, stories or theses in English, and only translated from English to Polish - but it is extremely frustrating and discouraging.
All the language learning theories turn out to be true: output/production/interaction really is more important that input/comprehension. I may consume 95% of text, video and music in English, but ask me to say a few words about myself, and I'll stammer and stumble like an FCE student.

4. Perhaps this is yet another reason why I should post more :)

5. (this point is more random) USS Dallas is going to be decomissioned soon and it's making me sad, all the sadder when I think of Tom Clancy. (2013 has been an awful year; Paul Walker omg ;_; ). I do hope it'll be made a part of a museum because that ship is legendary.

Today is the day I've figured out the password to my router! \o/ after writing it down wrong almost a year ago /o\

I know I could have had it reset to factory settings, but I didn't have the correct settings written down, and with my ISP nothing is ever easy to set up.

Now I can finally change the wifi password! And have a SSID more meaningful than random letters and numbers! And set up my new wireless printer-scanner! Wheeeee!

*

In other news, Haven! OMG!!! The recurring demolitions present a clear breach of International Humanitarian Law and undermine the sustainability of the communities that depend on them for survival.

The year 2012 ends with a somber record - just in its first 10 months, Israeli armed forces have destroyed 36 rainwater cisterns used by the Palestinian communities in the Area C of the West Bank, affecting over 1600 people, an increase from 34 cisterns destroyed in 2011. The communities whose cisterns were destroyed live unconnected to the water network and are forced to rely on rain harvesting and/or water purchases from vendors. Most of the communities that have been subject to demolition of cisterns reside in the vicinity of Israeli settlements and unauthorized outposts that enjoy a regular water supply.

Aid agencies are dismayed by what appears to be a continuous targeted destruction and consciously slanted distribution of one of the most scarce and most vital natural resources in the occupied Palestinian territory. As an object "essential for the survival of the population", according to International Humanitarian Law, water cisterns have special protection and hence should never be destroyed based on administrative reasons.

The destruction of essential water infrastructure in Area C is in clear violation of International Humanitarian Law and Israel's obligations as an Occupying Power, and is undermining the very existence of Palestinian communities in this region. Many among the destroyed cisterns have in the past years been rehabilitated with European Union (EU) and other donors' funds, in projects implemented by various members of AIDA (the Association of International Development Organizations) - testifying to the international community's understanding of the vital importance of these infrastructures for the survival of Palestinian communities in Area C. AIDA offers its unconditional support to all its members doing this vital work and calls upon the international community to ensure that demolitions of water cisterns are halted immediately, and to take concrete steps to ensure aid agencies can continue to assist vulnerable Palestinians unhindered and without interference.

--

I knew this was happening, but I didn't realize things were so bad. Some of my money went towards restoring those water cisterns, since I donate to PAH. Fuck you, Israel, they're goddamned WATER CISTERNS.

Happy New Year! :) (also: *facepalm*)

I hope everyone's had a good Christmas/free time. Mine was pretty okay :) especially since I'm off work till the end of the week.

I've been at my parents' since Dec 22, and yesterday I popped back home just for 5 minutes, literally, to grab a small gift for my brother's girlfriend.

While I was home I checked my mailbox - and there was a lovely card from viridian5 waiting for me. Thank you so much! but I'm ashamed to say that I COMPLETELY FORGOT TO SEND CARDS THIS YEAR (*face, meet palm*). I'm sorry ;_;

December was a shit month as both my parents got ill for 2+ weeks, only partly ovelapping, and I was at work alone (due to father being ill), then after work I always had to bring them food and supplies (due to mother being ill) and I was so, so exhausted. Were it not for online shopping I doubt I'd have managed any gift buying. Again, I'm sorry. I'll try to do better next year.

I've been overeating all week and, oy, it's time for another feast. My family's favourite way fo spend New Year's Eve: lots of specially prepared food, good wine and awful television :D I hope you all are spending the evening in your favourite way, too.

I [want to] believe that 2013 will be a good year for all of us *hugs all around*

Since I did so well updating this thing after months of inactivity, here's another post.

What I've been doing for the last three months: trying to amass a small collection of not-so-basic bricks so that I can make cool stuff. Let me tell you, it's not that easy when you a) have relatively little spare money anyway, b) live in Europe where sets are somehow more expensive than in the US (wtf, TLG), c) live in a relatively poor European country, d) all of the above. Nevertheless I'm finally getting close to the point when I can move past the original sets (though I love love love the Creator sets especially ♥) and get to building my own stuff.

Ahem.

:D

Now I'm just waiting for a package with a brown head for Teal'c and then I'll be turning mummies and Egyptians into Jaffa and Goa'ulds. I already have a sarcophagus and some snakes :D

It's a national holiday today, and although I hate the fact that it's actually a mandatory day off for a religious holiday, it's still a day off. I'll be using it to visit my friend A and see an Avengers + MIB3 double feature in IMAX 3D \o/

This will be my fourth** time with the Avengers. There should be a law for this: seen the same movie more than three times? You get a free DVD or something.

**It'll also be the last *sobsob* because they're not showing it in my town anymore.

In other news, I bought myself a LEGO set with Iron Man and Loki. I'm taking them with me today :D

Hart of Dixie ♥♥♥

I love this show so much, unironically. I noticed recently that I have a thing for small town America shows, which is why I fell so hard for Haven and Justified, and while Hart of Dixie is nowhere near those two in terms of actual quality of writing and acting, I can't help but love it. It's also one of those shows, like Private Practice, where I find ALL OF the cast ridiculously hot (except George, oh god, he's the most boring character ever, he even looks boring), so that helps.
Need I say that Zoe/Wade is my endgame? Or, failing that, happy!Wade/anyone is my endgame. Wilson Bethel is fantastic.

Help?

Dear friends list, I need your help. There's an item available on ebay that the seller will only ship to the US and Canada. Would anyone be willing to buy it for me and forward it to my address? I'd paypal you the money in advance, and you'd get a "thank you, I'm forever grateful" gift from me. Please?

*

I want to post more often but I either forget or don't have the energy to do it... which is on par with the rest of my life. I've started a daily to-do list with the most trivial things on it, to get me going, otherwise I'd never take out the trash or pay my bills. I guess I need to put "post to LJ" there. This time of the year the days (surprisingly) don't feel like one endless groundhog day and there are actually things I could post about: movies (Avengers! Iron Sky!), my recent minivacations with the family (Czech Republic FTW), books, TV (oh god, so much TV). I miss writing things down. Also, I suck at answering comments, I'm sorry if I owe you one. I'll get to it, soon.

I saw Battleship and I liked it, more than I thought I would. As long as you can suspend your belief high, turn off logic and enjoy just the pretty people, ships and explosions (yay naval porn), it's worth seeing on the big screen.

But that isn't as surprising as the fact that Alexander Skarsgård's character died so soon, and that Rihanna's character lived till the end. I was also surprised that the main character's girlfriend, a sexy blonde, wasn't completely useless, as blonde girlfriends usually are in these movies. One huge disappointment: no submarines :((( A few not-spoilers: Taylor Kitsch was very wooden, Tadanobu Asano was hot, and Rihanna was burning hot. I want to see more of her playing a sweaty dirty soldier with big guns, right now would be perfect, thanks.

I stuck fingers in my ears and had my eyes closed all through the Avengers trailer. It's so unfair that it only gets released in Poland in two goddamned weeks. TWO WEEKS! I might have to stay off the internet completely till then :/

PSA for people using Goodreads

Amazon is ending its data partnership with Goodreads, effective January 30, which means that Goodreads might lose part of its database as it has to cease using amazon's data. More details here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/780951-faqs-amazon-is-going-away-as-a-data-source

They have new sources of data for most of the books, and volunteers are working on "rescuing" many more. However, if you have a lot of books on your shelves that are less than common - especially books in languages other than English - now is a good time to export your books to a csv file, so that if you lose any of them you'll know what to add again later.

To export yourt books use the link in the top right corner of this page: http://www.goodreads.com/review/import

2012, really?

How is it the second week of January already? I swear, my perception of time is seriously messed up.

Anyway, I hope everyone's had a good holiday, or a good time off anyway. Mine was so-so, but, family issues aside, it was mostly because December squeezed all energy I had left out of me. I was at work alone practically all month, as my father first had to help out at our tiny production shop (an important project got delayed and every pair of hands counted) and then, as soon as that got done, he promptly caught a nasty flu that took him out of comission for the rest of the month.

So, all of December up until Christmas I worked 8-4 days alone (when usually I work 9-4 and there's at least one more person there). By the time Christmas rolled in, I was more than exhausted (and so very much sleep deprived). Thank god for online shopping. Then I was at my parents' for over a week, barely online, and now I'm editing two more crappy books and reaching the exhaustion point again.

So yes, that's my excuse for not being online much lately.

*

Speaking of Christmas -

viridian5, thank you for the card and the lovely photo. It's fun to have a glimpse of NYC on my desk :)

moogle_tey... thank you so much, ILU *HUGS*

I'm sorry I haven't sent any cards this year (see above why). I'll make it up to you somehow, soon-ish :)

*

I miss proper winter. There's been only ONE snow day so far, and the temperature is constantly above zero, and it's raining, ew. I don't remember the weather ever being like this. It's making me feel so unsettled. This is Poland, ffs, give me -10C and 40cm of snow ;__;

*

Basically, this is my life:

("All this motivation, to live through another day, week, month, I think it's thanks to TV shows")

Just so you know, I watch a lot of things, I'm just not very vocal about them. But I'll be happy if anyone wants to talk (spoiler-free) about any of the following.

Current(-ish) things:
- that I'm more or less fannish about: Haven ♥, The Vampire Diaries, Hart of Dixie ♥, A Gifted Man, Sherlock, Castle, Homeland, Revenge, Suburgatory, Suits. Also, Breaking Bad, but I've only watched the first season so far.

- that I watch because they are okay and make for good background noise: Once Upon a Time, Merlin, Rizzoli and Isles, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Pan Am

- that I used to love and can't seem to quit even though right now it hurts to watch them: NCIS, The Big Bang Theory, Chuck, Supernatural, Chuck, True Blood.

- that I'm watching because I'm obviously a masochist (where 'watching' includes a lot of fast-forwarding): 90210, Private Practice, Grey's Anatomy, House.

Old series I got into <strike>this</strike> last year:
Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager ♥, Star Trek Deep Space Nine (I'm 2 seasons in), Better Off Ted (why only 2 seasons, why ;_;). I'm also on my second attempt to finally watch all of X-Files.

I just realized I need A LOT of new icons :)

eta: I'm going back through my friends list as far as LJ will let me, so some people might get a comment from me on old posts, sorry:P

doctors on TV

It's like - I (still. why? I don't know) watch House but then I have to watch A Gifted Man to wash the bad taste out of my mouth.

I've given up on Grey's Anatomy entirely. Those people never grow up, and I'm tired of watching petty teenage drama that goes on and on.

Private Practice stays on my watching schedule mostly because the entire cast is ridiculously hot, but also because they deal with their drama in a slightly more mature way than GA does.

But in all honesty I only care for A Gifted Man, a tiny little show that does not deal primarily in backstabbing and contempt. I like that it leaves me with hope and good feelings ♥

So pretty

Proof that I should stop reading nail polish blogs: I just spent a ridiculous amount of money on several bottles from the China Glaze 'Let It Snow' collection.

I've never heard of the brand before because it's not available in shops here, but the reviews were so convincing and so pretty, that I found an online retailer and basically went over my next year's nail polish budget. I hope they're worth it.

I bought Twinkle Lights, Champagne Bubbles, Holly Day, Glittering Garland and Tinsel Town. I can't wait to try them out.

(I am removing the blogs from my RSS reader and moving them to regular bookmarks. Hopefully this will make them less tempting :P)

This is the only thing keeping me sane while I'm trying to finish editing the last few chapters of a HORRIBLY written book (another book. while working at 150% effort at my regular job since July - this year was touggghhhhh. my vacation's at least two months overdue, I am literally going crazy so much it shows - we're talking arguing with my coworkers over nothing, being mean to clients and randomly bursting into tears - so I'm finally getting some actual real time off next week after All Saints, but not if I don't finish this now. lalalalalalala /o\)

<lj-embed id="16" />

Most of this guy's other stuff is brilliant, too, which is why I bought him a beer, and so can you.

Are you fucking kidding me, Livejournal? A black&while header? Yes, it's a sad story when someone dies, when anyone dies, but this was no fucking saint.

OTOH, it's nice that today is the day I can categorize most people into "normal" and "brainwashed" (which does NOT coincide with whether they own a Mac product).

three cheers for my brother \o/ \o/ \o/

My little brother presented his thesis today and got his M.Sci.! \o/ In computer science! \o/ With the best possible grade! \o/

I'm feeling insanely proud, a bit jealous and also old. He's my baby brother, how's it possible he's all grown up now?

**

Last weekend my parents and I went to a bookstore to cash in on the loyalty program offered by one of our suppliers at work. The program is an AWESOME IDEA (for family businesses): you get X points for each order, depending on its value, and then you can either choose from their (meh) gift catalogue or spend an equivalent of X at any store you like and send the bill to them. We got 12 books and 2 volumes of manga for free \o/

But I digress. It turns out the book I edited back in January, and managed to completely forget about, has been published already. It was so weird to see my name in print, under "editor". It also got me thinking that they still owe me a small sum for editing a few additional pages for that book, which they said they would add to the next bill. Only it's July already and I haven't heard from them, so maybe they didn't like my editing and forgot all about me...

Turns out they didn't :D It's three days later and just got a call from the project manager who said that the author is writing another book - do I want to be the editor on it :D :D :D

It's the same author, who CANNOT write, so it means it will be a pain in the ass again, and they don't pay much, but, seriously, who cares :D A huge publishing house liked my editing skills enough to give me another book \o/

So, I finally saw X-Men: First Class

And my official OTP for the movie is Erik/submarine ♥

(any movie with submarines is at least 10 times better than the same movie without them. the main submarine scene in this one had me going :D *_* :D throughout)

Also did the people in charge of casting have some sort of contest to find the most unattractive male leads ever? Fassbender has a brilliant smile, and I can sort of see the connection to McKellen. But McAvoy? McAvoy as young Patrick Stewart? There had to be a contest. Maybe someone lost a bet?

The more I read various articles, entries and comments, the more I'm convinced that people all over the world were taught some sort of weird distorted history of World War 2, where no atrocities happened before or after the Holocaust, and Jews were the only ethnic group that suffered systematic killings and other forms of mass oppression.
I've seen so many comments where people honestly seem to think that WW2 is divided into the Holocaust (defined very narrowly as "what happened to the Jews") and regular warfare. I tried once or twice to comment or argue, but I'm really not up to educating people on such an enormous scale, and just thinking about misconceptions like these makes me go "What? What? What?" and then my mind shuts down in disbelief.
