The Louisiana Cancer Endowment drives targeted investments in research, education, and early detection to combat our state\u2019s critical cancer challenges. We focus on high-risk communities, especially in \u201cCancer Alley\u201d where cancer rates far exceed national averages. Through strategic partnerships with leading medical institutions, researchers, and community organizations, we’re building a comprehensive support system that reaches across Louisiana, from our largest cities to our smallest parishes.<\/p>\n

Our mission combines innovative research funding with grassroots education programs to ensure all residents have access to quality cancer prevention, detection, and treatment resources.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Louisiana Cancer Endowment is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation (founded 2024), affiliated with, but separate from, the Cancer Advocacy Group of Louisiana (CAGLA).<\/p>\n

In 2019, Louisiana faced a devastating cancer crisis, recording the third-highest age-adjusted cancer incidence rate in the nation and the fifth-highest cancer mortality rate. This crisis is particularly acute in the industrial corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans along the Mississippi River, commonly known as \u201cCancer Alley.\u201d In this 85-mile stretch, which encompasses numerous small communities and several parishes, residents face a staggering 95% greater chance of developing cancer compared to the average American. The severity of this health crisis is underscored by environmental factors, demographic disparities, and limited access to preventive care and early detection services.<\/p>\n

These statistics aren\u2019t just numbers \u2014 they represent families, communities, and generations of Louisianians who have been impacted by cancer\u2019s devastating toll.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The disparities in cancer outcomes between Cancer Alley and the rest of the country highlight an urgent need for targeted intervention, increased research, and sustained investment in cancer prevention and treatment resources.<\/p>\n

The Louisiana Cancer Endowment drives targeted investments in research, education, and early detection to combat our state\u2019s critical cancer challenges. We focus on high-risk communities, especially in \u201cCancer Alley\u201d where cancer rates far exceed national averages. In 2019, Louisiana faced a devastating cancer crisis, recording the third-highest age-adjusted cancer incidence rate in the nation and the fifth-highest cancer mortality rate. This crisis is particularly acute in the industrial corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans along the Mississippi River, commonly known as \u201cCancer Alley.\u201d In this 85-mile stretch, which encompasses numerous small communities and several parishes, residents face a staggering 95% greater chance of developing cancer compared to the average American. The severity of this health crisis is underscored by environmental factors, demographic disparities, and limited access to preventive care and early detection services.<\/p>\n

These statistics aren\u2019t just numbers \u2014 they represent families, communities, and generations of Louisianians who have been impacted by cancer\u2019s devastating toll.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The disparities in cancer outcomes between Cancer Alley and the rest of the country highlight an urgent need for targeted intervention, increased research, and sustained investment in cancer prevention and treatment resources.<\/p>\n

CAGLA is a coalition of cancer survivors, doctors, and philanthropists. Our Board of Trustees is made up of representatives of the state\u2019s most impactful non-profit cancer organizations along with a physician representative.\u00a0 Our Scientific Advisory Board is made up of more than forty multi-disciplinary cancer physicians representing nearly every major hospital and health system in Louisiana.<\/p>\n

In the last five years, our group has passed fifteen laws benefiting cancer patients, many of which have become examples for other state and national bills.<\/strong> We have an unprecedented 100% pass rate for legislation, as all our bills have been passed and signed into law. In addition, each Spring, we organize the CAGLA NeauxCancer Conference, the largest general annual cancer conference in the Gulf South.<\/p>\n

Despite being an epicenter for cancer, Louisiana had no state-wide cancer endowment. Inspired by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), Washington\u2019s Cancer Research Endowment (CARE Fund), and many others, CAGLA leadership has incorporated the Louisiana Cancer Endowment to create a permanent resource to promote cancer education and research and to serve as a beacon of New Hope in one of the nation\u2019s areas of greatest need.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The organization is a separate entity from CAGLA and will not be associated or involved in any lobbying or other political processes, but instead will aim to promote education and research across Louisiana to help address disparities, improve early detection, and ultimately create more cancer survivors.<\/p>\n

The Louisiana Cancer Endowment is seeking a small number of Founding Partners who will commit to our mission and vision prior to a broad public launch at the 2025 CAGLA NeauxCancer Conference in March.
