Hello, my name is
Kyle Owsen,
and I’m a Seattle-based software engineer with 10 years of experience designing scalable frontend architecture for Google, Meta, Amazon, and startups of all shapes and sizes.
Welcome to my Homepage!
Apocashop
Papers, Please meets Lemonade Stand
My college capstone game from forever ago. Even though it's a decade old, it still deserves the top spot on the portfolio. Has half a million plays between Kongregate, Newgrounds, and Albino Blacksheep!
Super Ball & Chain
Top-Down Brawler made in 36 hours
A game I made for the 2021 GMTK game jam. After trying a lot of unique and quirky game ideas, this was an attempt to go back to basics and just make a fun game that feels good to play. I'll make an improved version someday.
Adrift
Time loop text adventure for phones
A text adventure feels like a perfect fit for a phone if it just had a streamlined, mobile-friendly interface. I keep coming back to this idea, and it's fun to write for, but I don't know how to add enough puzzles to make it a game.
Maze Frenzy
Endless runner in an infinite maze
A mobile game I made back in 2017. To this day, the only good app idea anyone's ever given me when they said they had a great app idea.
Spellitaire
Spelling solitare mobile game prototype
I've always wanted a medium brain word game that's easier than a crossword but a little more involved than something like Wordle. I'm gonna come back to this idea the next time I'm between jobs, it probably needs to be level-based rather than an endless challenge.
Sounds Like Trouble
Audio-only game made in 48 hours
Made for an inclusivity-based game jam. Can be played entirely by sight or entirely by sound.
Arrow Pop
Chill arrow redirection game
An attempt to build a Candy Crush like game with arrow redirection. I think I got the satisfying chain reactions, but it's too hard and abstract for the player to make fun plans and feel like they're getting better.
aLLcheMy
LLM powered alchemy game
I've seen alchemy games, but never one that gave you total freedom without the interface getting overwhelming as the possibility space grows. This used Gemma 3 locally to generate word associations and Gemini to write the code. It can be a little nonsensical, but there's something engaging about it even when the output doesn't make perfect sense.
A Gamer's Mansion
Gaming-themed puzzle text adventure
See if you can open the vault in the attic! This puzzle requires some in-depth gaming knowledge to solve - googling stuff is expected.
Good Birthday
Have a good birthday!
This came to me in a vision and I had to make it.
Trigrid
Something with triangles?
I've always loved the look of triangle grids and that there's six directions you can move a triangle within one. This is my closest attempt to making something compelling that uses one - someday I will find the magic recipe to make triangles fun.
▯◊◈◓ ◐◈▬◖◔▸◊▞◖
Translate the alien language
Another gaming puzzle, this time about translating a bizarre language using your gaming knowledge. Note: This was made in 2022 and clues will not take into account any games released since then.
Hex Battle
Press-your-luck board game experiment
My prototype for a board game idea so I could test it against a bot as I iterated. I wanted to make something vibes based and rules-light, but ended up making it so rules-light that it's hard to have a strategy.
Taskle
ADHD-friendly todo app
After getting overwhelmed by todo lists that show you everything you need to do, I wanted one that only shows you a single active task. Unfortunately, procrastination is not so easily solved.
Voronoi Pop
Demo based on Voronoi diagrams
I've always wanted to make a game based on Voronoi diagrams, but can't find a way to make it fun. This one at least looks pretty neat.
Fortune City
Demo for a blackjack puzzle game
I've been noodling on a casino game with story elements for a long time, and this is the only idea that's made it as far as a prototype. I'm biased on how much juice I think this idea has because I like casino games.
Crossedword
Crossword with a twist
Yet another gaming puzzle. It may look like a normal crossword at first glance, but that's only half the battle. This one didn't turn out as well as the others, but I still think it's neat.
Enter Your Password
Crack the code
A tiny little game about cracking a password by recognizing patterns.
Very Old Games
Ancient GameMaker projects
Way back in elementary school I was obsessed with making stuff in GameMaker. Most of them have been lost to time, but I managed to find three of them and port them to the web.

This very website!
In case you want to see how I made the slick triangle animation at the top without any Javascript.
